Hey! I have a question. When I'm at a horse riding lesson and there's a horse infront of me, my horse goes infront of the horse infront of me to its bum and when we are trotting or walking I don't know how to get him away so can you help me?

As a former western and english rider as a kid, I totally agree with your statement that good riding is good riding no matter the discipline. Way back in the late 60s I rode my Arab both in hunt seat and western pleasure. In the beginning of 1970 I transitioned to an appendix QH, with whom I did green and regular working hunter and jumpers. I sold that horse (great horse), went back to college for a couple of years then bought an Appy who I rode english and western pleasure. I subsequently moved to Virginia with the Appy who took to jumping like he'd been doing it his whole life. School, work and marriage intervened and I had a couple of horseless years but couldn't stay away and when wd moved to PA, I took up eventing, then finally just dressage. I have been horrified to see what western pleasure has become because as I look at videos our horses back then had real gaits not some gimpy looking horses slogging their way around the ring. Walks, trots/jogs, canters/lopes were were very similar and all looked quite comfortable to ride, especially when you were taught the basics of good riding. Am glad to see the move away from the current hellish version of western pleasure. Thanks so much for showing this video!

I have a question that isn’t related to canter but I think you would have some good tips for me. I am starting to learn about haunches in and it is a new concept for me and my horse. Do you have any good tips for me that would be helpful in our training? Our main problem is that we can get it so it is ok on the right direction but when I’m going to the left he tends to get stuck.

On the 5 strides you are half halting, do you giving leg aid? Or release the leg pressure? Thank you so much for such a great video!.)

Thank you for this, I'm new to Advanced Medium in NZ, and I've been riding the renvers part of the movement with far too much bend. So actually not renvers at all so it seems.... Wonderful explanation and video to sink into my pea brain. Looking forward to practicing this now. Thank you so much.

I was reading about the Mongolian steppes, the people who lived there domesticated horses and developed bridles, bits and saddles, this led to reading about dressage, which led me to your video! Learned quite a bit.

Watch western pleasure style with arabian or half arabian horses. This frame some of them I mean top riders is brilliant!

Quick question, do you know if you can do some sort of video of teaching an energetic, squiggly horse to stand still in cross ties? I have a new horse, but she’s not really use to cross ties. If not it’s totally fine!

I was hoping to get more commentary on differences in the style of riding. For example, riding with a loose rein vs riding with contact.

Does my horse need to be round and on the bit to work on suppleness?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage3 күн бұрын
Yes and no! Suppleness is a pre-requisite to roundness, but once you have your horse round you can (and should) continue to work on getting them even more supple! Remember that suppleness and roundness are degrees. :) great question

I school at first level but we practice/try higher level movements like shoulder in. I was told to keep outside leg at the girth to push the shoulders over and inside leg behind the girth to keep the haunches on the wall. Is this wrong? I was told that the reins would only flex the head to the inside and the outside leg is needed at the girth to push the shoulders over. Dressage is so hard because I get conflicting information like this and where to weight your seat, at the inside bend or on the outside when practicing lateral movements.
@AmeliaNewcombDressage3 күн бұрын
Great question! I think what's happening is that 'inside' and 'outside' change depending on which bend the horse is going. So I'm saying the same thing, just referring to it as a different way than you're thinking of it. In 1st level, 'inside' and 'outside' aids are always the inside and outside of the arena, but once we get to second level, it can change when we bring in bending to the outside (like in renvers and counter canter). great question!

Why is this movement ridden with the outside leg back?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage5 күн бұрын
Simply, to add bend. But it also controls the haunches and direction. Otherwise it would be leg yield and counter bent leg yield. Great question!

I know what i am asking has nothing to do with this lol but on posting trot we have a diagonal right, so we are supposed to rise up when the outside leg swings out, but does that mean that when they bounce that is when their outside leg goes out? Anyone who knows PLEASE tell me!

The part in the Renverse where Herman says "the hips keep coming to this corner". Is he talking about the corner he is standing next to or the other corner to the left of our screen? Trying to understand where the energy of the horse is. is it on the left front shoulder when he is bending right in renverse? Watching a lot of Phillipe Karl. Trying to really understand which quarter of the horse the energy is and where my balance should be. Thank you! Super super video, super good timing for me as I went to bed trying to visualize this exact exercise. Thank you so much for all the time you put into these
