It worked! I tried it with my jumping horse for curiosity to see if it would work and now he can do piaffe 😂it’s so fun I know he is a jumping horse and I don’t do dressage but it’s nice to brag around the barn about it lol

You have the ability to make everything look so effortless, Amelia. And i love to watch your confident, clear, yet completely relaxed handling. What a lovely feeling to be able draw these complex movements out of yr equine partner with such finesse. Aren't they so trusting & willing? Lovely support & encouragement from yr husband (?) on the ground too! Just beautiful! Thankyou for sharing 🐎🥰🙏

We've been doing leg lifts since you showed them in strides last year. He's come a long way! He doesn't like to lift the leg away from me, but he'll get there in time. We can take baby steps forward with a lift so in time. Thank you for this great video!

Help! Trying to get my horse to start to lift his back legs. Using the whip lower on his leg doesn't work. I tried assisting by showing him by lifting with my hand (as if to pick hoof) and rewarding that. We got a little further however he bucked out a few times. Today I was able to get him to raise his legs by touching higher up on his leg/haunch. well I thought we were advancing. However!? Got in the saddle today and he started kicking out with his back legs (almost a buck). I didn't ask for it. Didn't reward or punish. Just pushed him forward into trot. Am I creating a bucking horse?! Hope not as he's always been such a nice ride.

Starting the leg-lifting training with the whip can be difficult since the whip has a bit more bite/sting to it. I like to start with a bamboo stick or carbon rod. You can also start in the cross ties with just your hand, run it down from the rump down the leg like you were picking it up, but instead gently tap before he picks it up, then he learns to lift from the tap. Just make sure you're in the correct position so he doesn't kick you if he gets confused. I have a whole section on the piaffe in the groundwork masterclass and you can ask me questions at any time there! amelianewcombdressage.com/groundwork-masterclass/

Great video! I have an Ottb that is still learning and she has a very stiff canter. I have been trying to get her to raise her legs more to get a more of a “fancy” canter but I have no improvement. Do you have any tips?

I tried getting my horse to do this he didn’t even pick up his leg at all 😂 But now I can’t do a demonstration on how to train the piaffe for my project on dressage for a class 😢.

I am still years away from the piaffe and passage, but I am trialing using these leg lifts to encourage my horse to tip his hips under more when trotting. He’s pretty dead to the whip so I have to use some force, OR treats. I’m really trying to work backward so he’s more sensitive to the whip bc getting after his legs so much makes me uncomfortable. I’m a big baby and struggle to be confident when being firm bc I feel like I’m being mean, but this quickly indicates to him that he can wait me out. He’s a draft and not to stereotype but he seems to be this way on all fronts. Afraid of nothing, very tough, and tolerant of anything. Hoping that with a combination of fair pressure release, some R+ and years of consistency we can reach a relationship that doesn’t feel like an immovable object meeting an unstoppable force 😅
