That comment is kinda right. Out of all the people that are hosting a vlog sale right now , ALL of them have pieces that were never used. That’s means we’re just buying to be buying. …… We need to get out of the buy buy buy buy mentality……

It’s not KZbin, it’s just the current economy. People who bought bags as a monetary investment in the hope of selling for an inflated price when they needed the money, are now discovering that everyone needs the money at the same time. Many sellers are still wanting to get back what they paid for the bag - some even want close to current retail - but there aren’t enough buyers with money. I love a Vlog sale from a KZbin creator because their bags are still in great condition when sold!

It’s interesting that I’ve seen a flood of vlog sales recently. I do think that many influencers are buying bags and turning luxury into fast fashion. And, I also tend to think that some influencers can’t afford to buy at the rate they do, and to keep up with the next big thing they have to sell what they have. However, I also think these kind of vlog sales and the prices many bags are advertised at have an influencer premium included. The average person cannot afford to purchase at the rate of influencers and even more critically the average person cannot get recoup nearly the amount of money that most influencers can recoup. Even if the bag is being sold at a loss. So I think influencers do a huge disservice to the luxury community. However, with that said, we all have control over our own choices. My viewing habits have changed. I do not watch influencers who have mega collections. If you have more bags than you can actually carry. If you have bags that you never carry. If you continue to unbox more things. I don’t care for that any longer.
@ameliarosescloset Жыл бұрын
very well reasoned comment, thank you
@AnUrbanGypsy Жыл бұрын
I think the YT algorithm pushes more onto us if we watch just one sale and it feels like everyone is doing it. The ‘influencer premium’ really depends on the influencer selling. I’ve purchased from two and got a reduction of 40% and 50% from what they paid. Maybe it’s just Chanel and Hermès that bring the premium. 🤷🏻♀️
@deborahcurtis1385 Жыл бұрын
Yes but reseller organisations with websites tend to take a huge premium so vloggers tend to reduce their prices below that. If they're selling directly you get a discount and it's a win/win for the buyer and the vlogger. But if they're referring you to a reseller then the discount isn't going to be as big. I've got bags I don't use but that's life I will probably hang onto them or gift them rather than sell into this market.

I did like the unboxing videos and the what fits inside was a great help in my decision making. But over the last few years I have been sickened by the price increases. To a point it’s made me think differently about the brand. I stopped watching certain influencers because I simply can’t relate to their lifestyle. I only watch videos from the content creators that I can relate to and love their personalities. Please continue to make these chat videos because I really enjoy them. I think what you are saying is spot on. There is a rebalancing taking place of the luxury resale world. Let's not forget that for a while there were so many resellers who would buy the hyped and highly sought after bags, only to list them for double the price, increasing scarcity and leading the brands to raise prices to counter the trend. In economics the market bears whatever the buyer is willing to pay. It looks like the buyers have reached their limit.

I agree. There are a lot of issues that impact the market and you touched on many of them. Reseller companies offers pennies on the dollar and sell for more than retail. The only winners are resellers, luxury brands and influencers. Reselling bags for full price is difficult for the average person today. Resellers don’t offer much and the competition is tough. Not to mention the problem with fakes. I agree with selling bags that you find no longer works for you. It’s not practical to keep a bag that you don’t use. Also it depends on your profession. If your in fashion you can’t just keep everything forever. It’s annoying for some people to hold KZbinrs to a standard that is just ridiculous. Luxury supply and demand has become much more nuanced because of the existence of the resale market and people showing their bags on social media / YT. The influencers drive the hype for the current bags... And then the resale market, ironically, also drove the hype for future collections by certain houses - "Well, if this bag is selling above the fashion house's price, their next version will too". Until the resale market began to get out of control - too many options of where to buy / too many horror stories / general cost of living crises / RRP of the bag from the houses going up etc - it was actually somewhat of a benefit to the fashion houses. I wonder how much the greed of the likes of Chanel with their escalating prices is both destroying the retail market AND ultimately destroying the future of their brand by reducing that hype. Personally, I'm not buying because, altho financially I am more comfortable than many, the focus on cost of living in the news etc makes me think much more about what I am spending my money on. With so many suffering, it heightens my own 'economic anxiety', but also makes a designer handbag purchase feel incredibly frivolous. I feel like this more than ever proves the point so many of us have said over the years - luxury handbags are NOT bona fide investments... But it's taken the bottom falling out of the market for many to see that. Christ. That was a tome. Sorry. 🙄🤣

The resale websites are definitely seeing changes. I just watched a video from hello catwalk city about fashionphile’s new return policy…it is a dramatic change and no doubt an attempt to save money on returns or dissuade returns altogether. A lot of people this past year have been laid off too, it’s just not a good time to drop thousands of dollars on a handbag. Interesting topic Amelia. The re sale market is a minefield and also has many moving parts. It is not simplistic as the comments suggested. There are huge price increases from the Fashion Houses which has to affect the value of pre loved items. It might make pre loved items more desirable and it also may cause an influx of pre loved items people want to sell as they think they will get a good price due to the Fashion Houses Price Increases! It might take time but at the end of the day it's all about supply and demand. Supply is affected by many many things and the same for demand - there are many other factors in the world that affect our buying and selling habits. Luxury KZbinrs are not fully responsible for everything that happens in the industry. Things are only worth what people are willing to pay for them! I know you personally and therefore I know the time thought and also some anguish that went into deciding to sell some of these items in your vlog sale. You definitely do not buy to sell and you don't move things on without a care or a thought. Having an audience allows you to give great insight into what worked for you and what didn't. I think there are many factors influencing the slow down. The economy, people who continue to work from home and those , like me, that didn’t go back to work post pandemic. I have had my favorite channels over the years. Some of them seem to have impulsive/ compulsive shopping habits. I just know that they cannot possibly carry that many bags or wear that many pairs of shoes. Some I’ve stopped watching. Other channels I’ll check in with them now and then. I have had frustration with climb up to Hermes and that “journey” I cannot count the number of videos where the influencer has attained their holy grail bag only to turn around and unbox another holy grail bag. Almost all of the Hermes bags have design flaws, in my opinion. The Birkin is too heavy, the Kelly hard to close and the list goes on and on. Louis Vuitton has become fast fashion. They no longer seem to care about quality- just the latest collection. Chanel’s prices are insane. Other houses are in the group with the sick teddy bear ad campaign. All of this has caused me to put a pause on my handbag collection. I loved hunting stuff down on the pre-loved market but I won’t pay over retail. I think long and hard about whether something works for my lifestyle. I need to wear what I already own. Great video. I do love your channel.

I think with a ‘following ‘ we definitely have an advantage in selling pieces that may not sell themselves, but I don’t think the small number of luxury KZbinrs selling pieces has changed the resale market. There are some great advantages for the buyer in this market and I’m certainly looking to preloved for pieces I missed the first time around - and I think prices are more realistic than they were.

I definitely think that KZbin/social media has had a direct impact on the number and severity of boutique price increases but not the resale market in general terms. Resale value is dictated by what people are willing to spend, regardless of the original price. Dior and Prada bags are great examples. I can understand some elements of viewer frustration with vlog sales but I think it depends on the person and reasons behind the sale. In my opinion you come across as very authentic and I don’t believe that you buy to create content (my biggest annoyance with vlog sales). I don’t understand comments that mention lifestyle as everyone’s financial situation is different. There are people who won’t be affected by the current financial crisis and can continue to buy luxury as normal, if that puts people off then they shouldn’t watch those videos. We’re all in control of what we consume on social media. Similarly, to me it seems obvious who may be curating a certain online image and so I don’t watch those creators except in certain circumstances. I feel grateful for YT in helping me to make informed purchases but at the same time I am patiently waiting for luxury to lose its appeal to the masses so it can go back to feeling special, rather than fast fashion. Those who truly love and appreciate luxury will always buy and at prices that feel right to them; it will be nice when social media isn’t as saturated with it anymore.

There is one KZbinr in Australia nutritious for buying, unboxing. And returning. She hides behind "I don't like it I bought it online" or "I can't make my mind up" or "the quality is shocking and Im not paying that". She's one example of many and it's definitely as that commenter said. In-authentic and only doing it to get views. Collecters are a real segment in the luxury market and I am one of them for vintage and Limited edition LV's so that's a different story. I think also what has ruined second hand luxury market is more the influencers and brands giving them a new bag they want to be a trend and with the declining quality assurance on these products. It's just not worth it anymore. Good video and very true. Resale market and second hand lux was supposed to be GOOD BARGAINS!!! Not recoup your fees. Luxury is always a bad investment except for Birkins and chanel. Let's go back to that model please. You will lose money on a Louis Vuitton artsy. A Louis Vuitton neverfull. Buy it enjoy it and sell it for whatever it's worth. If you loose 1.5K then so be it....

I don't even look @ pre - loved bc a lot of times the damage or wear is more than described & bc the prices are at market value or just short of so I generally buy direct & trusted retail establishments. Yes luxury KZbin is responsible I agree. It is a sad state of affairs worldwide & uncertain times. We are replaying the 90's & lux has been put on the backburner for most & those that do have don't want to logo in the faces of those that don't. We as consumers are disgusted with the gross cost of such trivial things that will degrade by nature in our hands over time & cannot hold the value vested in them. So then we turn to "Quiet Luxury" in response as we did in Y2K. Until the market levels out it's not even worth dabbling in.

I never comment, but this was so interesting! I Love your channel, love your collection, love your humour/personality and love your business brain! I don’t actually own a luxury handbag (about one month away from my first purchase after saving for ever it seems) but I watch your channel for advice and experience regarding practicality, quality and sheer appreciation of something beautiful. Your insight into such a multi factorial issue was informative and amazing. Thank you❤

I’m still waiting for the Chanel resale prices to come down. I still find that used items are being priced at or above retail for this brand. I’m kind of tired of LV now so have taken a long break since they have too many collections that don’t resonate with me (too many guitar straps!). I agree that the crazy prices, lower quality, and never ending hype has made me disengage from buying as much lately. Great discussion, Amelia!

I’m going to agree with you on all the points you made. I certainly don’t think you personally have done anything wrong. It’s true. But I used KZbin to learn on which classic bags to get not the trendy ones. If the bag is classic then it’s in the store and why would I pay the same on resale when I can get it new
@ameliarosescloset Жыл бұрын
If it’s available in store you would only go preloved for a saving surely, i don’t understand high prices on readily available pieces

I strongly think that you are not someone who buys, only to sell. I believe that there are some folks who are doing that/ and selling at a large profit, but once I find someone who is (what I consider unethical), I stop watching them. I will continue to watch your videos because I feel that they are educational and I enjoy you sharing your love of bags and insights around the lux items.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I don't think luxury youtube is so big that it would have that kind of impact. It's like this for me - the people who are luxury youtubers are probably able to sell luxury goods for higher than your average person because they have an audience that trusts them. However, everyone else will have yo go the "normal" route. Also, I would think that people who constantly buy and sell would eventually lose the trust of their audience but not sure on that end. I 100% agree that regardless, anyone who isn't enjoying their purchases should be able to sell without judgment.

If a bag is hard to get it goes over but i think most lv bags can be found retail now, i think it should cone back to the resale market being a saving after a while.

I just think it is also with fakes. More people are trying to buy real bags and get scammed with a fake or people just buy fakes in general as they are getting better in quality.

Well there could most definitely be a correlation between the price increases to consumers opting for resale, as yes the prices are driven higher in the resale but I don't think they compete directly with the price increases in store (with the obvious exception of Hermes quota bags)

And I do believe that KZbinrs that do luxury content are ruining the luxury bag industry. And it’s unrealistic to think someone could just continue to keep buying those bags. They’re sending a bad message. But that’s how they make the money so I’m not gonna knock someone for making their money.

The prices are already coming down look at fashion file and other places I purchased a Lulu large bag for $2000 and when I say it was brand new, it was brand new. It was like the perfect person does bag and box amazing. And I’m about to get a good price on another bag because they have a discount now from three to $600
@hhueter Жыл бұрын
yeah influencers are part of building up a hype cycle. but, honestly it depends on the bag, tbh. from what i've seen very few bags are going for above retail and it's prices for most bags are still about half off. I think the opinion that it's dead is mostly from people focusing on hermes and chanel. I don't see hermes prices slowing down, but chanel might. However, brands like fendi or ysl (the two i browsed the most) are still going to be going for about half price. Though those may sit on the shelf longer right now. I think the ease of being able to sell to a place like fashionphile of trr as makes the resale market easier to enter it for non-influencers so there's going to be more inventory. I think there's possibly a misconception that most people are selling their bags at a huge profit. Most of these bags are being sold at a loss.
@ameliarosescloset Жыл бұрын
Most are sold at a loss, dior also doesn’t keep it’s re sale value

Well said. I have an issue with people that comment so directly/personally. Go live your life and do not watch the video. There is a reason that they are called, "influencer's". You should always be wary of this and use what is good for you and your personal living and edit out what is harmful. The pandemic affected us all, I have made bag mistakes that i have resold, spent more and was influenced, LOL. I look at it as capitalism at its best and basic---supply and demand. The resale market will not "die" but economics will definitely drive it.

It is so interesting to watch fomo buying and selling addiction. It is frenzy and addiction. There is always an opportunity cost in the time and money. I wonder about mental health. I just don't think at 80, I will say I wish I would have bought that popular bag. There will always be a fomo bag right around the corner. Resale market prices no longer make sense. Prices are way too high and condition is worse than they used to be. Why buy used? Then houses have raised prices so why buy new. Just be happy with what you have. It is like low interest rate mortgages in the US. If you have 2%, you are staying put. Also, influences are selling gifted bags. It creates a false unauthentic market which always falls. Ask Holland about their flower stock market.
@ameliarosescloset Жыл бұрын
I think selling the gifted bags is a whole other conversation, but I agree, by the time I am 80, I doubt I will still own very many bags!

Can we also talk about influencer channels that use their subscribers to make a profit? There is a channel that has sold some bags at retail even though online the same bags could’ve been purchased on sale and new. And other bags sold for 2x the price. That’s just tacky in my opinion.

💯 true, I know I've changed what I buy. I know even what I watch has changed, I only watch lux with a very few now. The constant unboxing has become boring. I only watch 5 utube r's now you included. The handbags have become very overpriced, you can no longer get near what you paid when you want to move them on. So I buy much less and make sure I will have my wear out of them. I used to be very much against dupe bags. But when you think about it, who are the major benefactors of your genuine purchase? Bernard Arnault, the richest man in the world, alongside other billionaires. If, sales associates were treated well and paid well, I would think twice about purchasing a superdupe. Now, I buy superdupes and am investing the money I saved to give to Animal Humane Societies and Doctors Without Borders. The people in China from whom I purchase dupe bags need the money more than Bernard Arnault, who owns both LV and Dior. In addition, all these houses copy others' styles as well.
