I bought my first Cartier piece in NYC. After, the SA asked if we were still going to be shopping. We said yes. He put the red box and the Cartier bag inside a plain white bag as to not make us a target. We were alarmed and ended up taking an Uber right back to the hotel. I appreciated the heads up.

when i was in paris last yr, the SA at Chanel told me without telling me it wasn't safe to walk around with my shopping bags. she said, you're going right back to the hotel right, no more shopping? to which I took the hint. i came back to that area later empty handed. but I did see girls happily walking out of hermes with the big white bags, to which I'm sure burglars will also put 2 and 2 together.

Frankly I’m shocked that they didn’t put away all their high value items in a safe or vault overnight (at a bare minimum) Their glass door was also very substandard. It will be interesting to see how the insurance claim plays out for the individuals who were consigning the bags. Also the insurance will insist on them increasing their security for any new cover, so who will they pass that increase on to?

That mention of it feeling violating is spot on. After people broke into my house in the middle of the night to steal a range of items that was the exact feeling we had. I did have a little giggle that they decided to steal my car keys but not the Fendi baguette they were in. They opted to steal my daughter's $50 beach bag instead. But it really does make your blood boil.

I consigned a birkin of mine before and the first question I asked was if I would be fully reimbursed if something happened and if it‘s the resell or regular value of the bag. I had a contract with them and I felt secure and everything went well thank goodness. In regards to wearing Luxury, I will not live in fear. My bags are insured. I will wear my bags without fear. However I will always make sure to stay away from dodgy areas and uber from place to place in unknown cities. 💕

its not about the risk to the item but more about the risk to your physical self You don't want to get stabbed or beaten because you re wearing something expensive. But same I still wear them YOLO and avoid obviously to wear in riskier areas

Very well said. It makes me sick when this happens. My father (87 yrs old) and I were in an Apple Store when it was hit by these men who ran in and grabbed electronics and escaped in a waiting car. It was so frightening. My son who works for a huge retailer had a person come in shoot a gun and demand jewelry and escaped. People have gone mad and I don’t see it getting better.

If it hasn’t happened to you, you tend to think things aren’t as bad as they are, giving you a false sense of security. Having recently been the victim of an aggravated burglary for a luxury car, reimbursement or insurance doesn’t cut it because often what was stolen is no longer available to repurchase. The Police are wonderful but so dejected and also brutally honest because even when their hard work pays off and arrests are made, the thieves are given a 6 month sentence, out in 3 and free to steal again, armed with even more knowledge that they learned in prison. Sometimes they’re bailed the same night they’re arrested if they’re teens! They did leave my LV damier ebene bag behind and untouched as a small consolation. I have been very wary of carrying any designer bag for the past year because I feel Australia is now going the same way as Europe these days.

There was an attempted robbery at a consignment store near me in the UK (Arm Candy Bags). The police caught the thieves and the stock was returned. If I shop luxury I always ask for a plain white bag to put the carrier bag in as I don’t live in London so get the train home. I feel safer. I’ve worn my LV monogram in London and figure it’s so heavily counterfeited, people won’t be sure it’s real which conversely makes it safer. Most of my other bags are under the radar and IYKYN which again, makes me feel safe. I didn’t buy them for that reason. I just have an understated style.

i‘m always amazed at how people want to own the Cartier love bracelets that are screwed to your wrist. when i did business in some countries i was specifically advised not to wear anything like that because some people have no issue with chopping off your hand to get the gold. not naming the countries since the internet is a vile place and everything gets misconstrued; just because you had fun at your 5star compound for 5 days for 50% off and nothing happened doesn’t mean anything. also, if you consign anything make sure that place has insurance and it’s in their contract!

WOW London/UK just seems like they are on a whole other level when it comes to security risk when carrying designer bags. I've lived in NYC for the last 11 years and have never felt scared of wearing my designer bags (although there were a few months when coming out of covid when I was being a little more careful) but since then I see people all over manhattan, on the subway and on the bus wearing their Channel, Hermes, Dior...etc . All these incidents make me a little weary of going to London

I am from San Diego Ca and not too long ago, they robbed a Chanel Store inside a Nordstrom in broad daylight. The boutique was near a sliding door and road to parking lots. Also every time we shop at Herme’s, our SA puts our boxes in a plain white bag even if the store is located in a swanky shopping mall. 😢

These are shops but like you say, you having your bags behind you and you mentioned apartment getting robbed, like we can’t wear our bags down the street, you can’t openly carry your recent purchases without the fear of your bags being snatched, you can’t walk your dogs as they may be targeted (like Romina on YT mentioned on her last video), and walking with your phone we now know may get snatched by the moped thieves, walking alone down a street is also a risk… says more about this society and also lack of policing… BUT we have to live our lives… our time her is short, we need to find happiness and enjoyment in whatever form that brings some people it’s holidays, fashion, luxury etc just be aware of your surroundings…wishing everyone to stay safe and well ❤

I have consigned and never considered what would happen if the items were damaged or disappeared while at the consigner. I’ll be paying more attention to that now. I’ve been hearing that London and New York are problematic. I didn’t feel uncomfortable in London and we’re heading to NYC next summer, so we’ll see I guess.

One more thing, remember Charis in Dallas I think it was. She and her husband were followed with their shopping bags. They changed shopping malls. The thieves followed them into the garage and waited for them to go into the new shopping mall. Smashed the window of their car and took their bags.always lock your things in the trunk!

Once I wanted to buy a cheap bike just to occasionally run the bike in the big city I live in, I came to the realization, most of these second hand bikes listed on the local eBay or fb marketplace were most probably stolen. I didn’t buy any at the end just not to support the very common bike steals in my city. I think all resellers of bags and watches should never accept a bag if the person is not able to provide a proof of purchase. And we should never buy from someone who’s not able to to pass the proof of purchase. I know that with watches, the price only goes down if you don’t have the receipt nor the authenticity card, but you can still sell it for a slightly lower price. If people just stopped buying it, the criminals wouldn’t be as motivated to steal. It’s probably impossible to happened, as just like with fakes, there will always be people who don’t care about the story behind the bag and/or its authenticity and just want to get a bag at the lowest price.

I 100% left all designer bags or any that had visible logos when we traveled to Italy, and thank GoD I did because we had a little debacle at the train from bologna to Milan where part of our luggage’s were left at the train platform!!!! We had to wait an hour in Milan for the next train to arrive with them, and had they been designer / with logos, I’m 99% sure they wouldn’t have arrived to us in tact. It’s very common to hear of women losing their purses in restaurants, public transport and it’s such a shame.. If I carried anything designer it’s usually a tiny piece or I’m only going to the mall so I feel a little safer. Sad world we live in now.. scary!!!

I was in London walking around with my Kelly on the same weekend that they were robbed. I did feel a bit uncomfortable at times in London with my Kelly. I shopped at VCA in that trip and always use the plain white carrier bag. I also have a Birkin consigned with Sellier but thankfully wasn’t stolen. I think it would be covered with insurance. I considered asking them to return the bag, but Sellier is the best seller so I didnt pull it back in the end. They are very efficient and professional

Yeah frankly nowadays it is not safe in a lot of places i.e London, New York. Yes if i am in NY i will be afraid too as i have heard many even robbed during the bright day light in NY, walking into some shops and took stuff and walk out as if they have the right to take it. I went to Japan recently and went to LV in Tokyo, i purchased a Speedy 20 but i am also afraid to carry the handbag in the paper bag all over Tokyo. i took out the handbag with the dust bag and put in separately from the LV paper bag. I was told Japan is safer but i do not want to take the chance too to be a target. I had something (not valuable) in the LV paper bag instead when i walk around in Tokyo. When i use my luxury handbag, i am very caution that on that day where i want to go. Usually in malls that i am comfortable with and i know my way to get back. At times, i also bring a separate recycle big bag to put my handbag inside if i am on public transport. I know that sounds so silly but is better to be safe than sorry. Even after purchasing something from my local boutique, i will not carry the designer paper bag with the handbag inside all around. I will either put it in another paper bag or Ikea big recycle bag so that it will not attract attention. I will still consign but like you had mentioned, i never asked them before what will happened if my handbag got stolen while consigning with them. Now looks like i will have to ask. crime in my city has determed me from bring my bags out. the times I do bring them out, I really think about it and I'm cautious with them. when it comes to consigning I don't know what companies to trust. i don't know if you have watched any of She's The Posh videos regarding Rebag. it's sad and horrific what they did to her. also I'm glad she exposed them because now that I am thinking of letting some bags go I am reading these companies' terms and conditions because I recall rebag saying they are not responsible for your bag if it gets stolen on the way to them.

What a horrible thing to happen to that shop! I am definitely more aware of what handbags I carry when I'm on vacation, or just out and about. I try to carry crossbody bags, or handbags that doesn't scream luxury. I still use my bags, just more cautious, and careful. I heard of a story of someone putting their Gucci, and/ or luxury handbag on the back of their chair in a restaurant,, and someone walking by and taking it with out them even noticing until it was too late. Just because its an upscale place doesn't mean that people are not going to steal. So sad.

Sadly I think crime is contributing to the downfall of luxury right now. No one wants to carry bags anymore for fear of being robbed hence no one is buying anymore. I was one of those that mentioned NYC. You were fortunate. NYC has gone downhill terribly. In every aspect… My friends just visited London this summer. The guy was in the middle of using his phone when someone snatched it and took off. Drained his apple pay account. The female had on a Chanel WOC and got knocked over when they were attempting to take it. It’s sad the state of the world we live in. I’ve worn my designer bags all over the world and never felt unsafe. I think it’s the mindset of the wearer. A lot of us don’t live in the middle of a crime ridden city or (like me) live in a driving city where we won’t often be stopped on the street so it’s not as much of a concern. When I do visit NYC, Paris, etc I always choose a more secure bag and try to have boutiques deliver purchases to my hotel instead of carrying shopping bags around. When you spend a lot of time living in a city you learn how to be savvy and smart with your surroundings.

This is becoming a trend, my local consignment shop owner has shut her brick and mortar as her insurance rates tripled after 3 incidents of trucks being driven through her window and cage. Not to mention the extra work and headache of restoring her space. Not worth it to her anymore. Understandably she went online, but definitely sad the shopper’s experience is impacted. Her bags now take longer to sell and it’s less convenient for the sellers to drop off items. Such a shame, sadly Canadian legal system doesn’t punish harshly if thieves are even caught. Sad times

I work in a town with alot of homeless for a year. This after 25 years ,same company, in another town with money. Today I did wear a LV bag to work but used a Coach guatiar strap. My thinking in this town I can down grade the bags with cheaper straps. Only one co worker recognized my bag.

This is just awful! There are times when I will turn my Birkin around so it looks like a boring ole black tote bag and when I’m shopping I might toss my purchase in a Wawa reusable tote bag. Wawa is a convenience store in Philadelphia so the bag is commonplace. When I travel I tend to bring my classic flap and I’ve honestly never felt unsafe - even in NYC.

I would still consign from a reputable consignment company. It seems like the consignment company assumes all the risk if your items are stolen. They get the short end of the stick unfortunately if the items aren’t recovered.

I bought a Gucci bag in Atlanta which is dangerous imo because the Lenox mall has has some issues. I had to walk around with a huge burgundy bag with GUCCI in huge letters on the bag. While carrying my Bvlgari serpenti cabochon bag (thankfully, most ppl don't recognize that bag but it looks expensive) we went to build a bear for the kids and I told my husband we needed to get out of there because of the Gucci bag.

I was in New York recently right around the time you were and I never felt unsafe. I went to 5th avenue and shopped and walked back to my hotel with my shopping bags that had designer names on them. It was only when walking back that I felt concerned about the bags, but nothing bad happened. I think if you are aware of your surroundings, with fast access to your phone, while walking in pairs or groups it's not scary at all to wear your nice things. With that said, if I was alone, I would have taken a taxi back to the hotel.

In Italy gypsy/type went into our pockets, flipped open my purse/not designer (while I was wearing it). Saw how they ask for directions while placing a map/newspaper over the tourists bag while their accomplice gets the wallet. Tourist areas have this problem. If uncomfortable, throw scarf over the bag. Consignment neighborhood store has been broken into but the sweet lady business owner has not put $$$$$ in the front window now. We’ve been warned by several people to stay vigilant with our possessions and not wear nice things in public, to the point where I’ve been told I should leave my engagement ring at home to avoid any risk of theft.
