As a white guy on the other side... I feel it too. I also happen to have an academic "understanding" of the situation and have a fourth-wall-obliterating, meta-understanding of how everything I "was taught" and "studied" and researched through most of my adult life does not come close to helping me bring it to life with my own family. It... It's hard...

my white dude didn't speak *_any_* Spanish and now won't stop and he's stolen all my catch phrases, now everyone thinks they're his and they love him 😭 so I may be biased but sometimes it's better if you keep Spanish between u and the kids lol

My immigrant mom never taught me German, and I had to take French until high school. But yes, I could understand her - plus, she spoke Germglish (German version of Spanglish) so even when she was trying to be sneaky I would catch on. 😂

My Omi was the only one of her family who didn't teach her children German. I don't know why, exactly, but I think it has some to do with her being married to a WWII Army veteran who caught a lot of flack for marrying a German woman (she and the few relatives who survived the war came as refugees in 1956). Every where we visited, everyone spoke German with each other. I tried to learn, but foreign languages are not my forte. I just know that they talked about people in front of them all the time.

My husband would have the power to remind everyone how much was based on him and me in an effective way and point out differences in styles of living. Another one would remind everyone who those characters were based on to begin with and how much others have overused our stories and sacrifices. the other would have money and not care to much about social consequences of being blunt.
