Norwegians love to take the mick out of the Swedes, and vice versa. In fact, all the Nordic countries love joking about each other, typical sibling rivalry. They will also form a united front to any outsider threatening any of them, again in typical sibling fashion.

We love sarcasm and irony here in Scandinavia. Other cultures seldom like or understand our type of humor or comedy. Also because we are very straight forward, open and honest society we historically have joked about mostly everything. Alot of these comedy things needs cultural awareness and context for you to understand as it’s often inside jokes that only we will understand. Norway has always been the lesser country compared to Sweden and Denmark as we are all related cultures and the banter stems from hundreds of years of being oppressed and ruled by both. And because of this there’s a lot of rivalry going on. We love to diss and hate on each other. Mostly for jokes, but sometimes it’s also serious. I don’t like Danes, and Swedes are kinda naive and dumb, yet mostly are very friendly. I prefer Icelanders as they came from us originally.

Denmark and Sweden used to be bullies and fought each over Scandinavia. Norway included. So some banter is expected. Nowdays everybody picks on Sweden and sweden pick on Norway and Denmark mostly. Friendly banter. Sibling rivalry really. Sweden and Finland also have a thing… 🩷

There is a long tradition of this friendly rivalry between Sweden and Norway and we tend to make fun of each other. I think it is a remnant of when Norway was ruled by Sweden. After the black plague Norway entered into a union with Denmark, which was OK with most Norwegians. But after the Napoleonic wars Denmark was forced to give Norway to Sweden as part of war reparations. This did not sit well with us Norwegians. Regarding Norwegian humor, it is often based on sarcasm, irony and self deprecation. We try not to take ourselves too seriously (most of the time).

I heard that 45 million Americans are of norwegian origin, similarly around 30 million Americans are of Danish origin. Some 2 million americans are of Swedish origin too

I think it's closer to 4.5 million, at least confirmed. There are almost as many Americans with Norwegian heritage in the US as Norwegians in Norway.

Well yeah because about 1 million emigrated to the Americas due to poverty, and a “better life”, as it’s not easy to farm here, and not enough room. Everyone has relatives in the US and Canada, but few have any contact. Most of them don’t speak Norwegian either. And we certainly don’t want them back🤣🤣🤣 Many are too right wing… as here in Norway we have way more political parties to choose from left to right and center.

@@kilipaki87oritahiti Good points. To elaborate on that, I come from Finnish heritage. They had several years of failed crops in Finland, a lot of them settled in the forests in Sweden and Norway. It's actually called "Finnskogen" (lit. Finnish forest) still, and we have a celebration of the forest Finns coming up in just a week. There's usually some Americans with Finnish ancestors there too, to learn more about the culture and history. Some from my extended family moved to Minnesota, North and South Dakota quite recently, so they still speak Norwegian fluently. It would be cool if Midtgaard was a variation of Midgard, the realm of men in Norse mythology, but it's probably like you mentioned, a farm in-between two other farms 😁

@@AudunWangen Not only forests, but many Finns came to Finnmark and Troms and got work and made a life there, my great great granddad came from Torniovalley (Finland or back then it was northen swede) and was a Kven. Vadsø in Finnmark is a town where the Kven herritage is very high.

Sweden occupied Norway in 1814, and threatened the Norwegians when the Norwegians did'nt do as the Swedes commanded. It was a union by force.

No point in explaining to US citizens why Europeans see Trump as the most dangerous person alive. Understanding it requires knowledge about the world that 90% of US citizens do not possess. It's like explaining quantum physics to a 5-year old. Waste of time.
