LA is a salad bowl, NY is a melting pot, at least for me.

I think these should be switched. In New York there are restaurants from every region of the world around every street corner and different kinds of music are played on the streets by performers. In LA generally, there is a certain type of cultural norm everyone subscribes to and there is a shared culture across the city. This is not to say there is a lack of diversity and cultures but rather the culture is far more shared.

Supposed to be a melting pot. You bring your culture and assimilate into AMERICAN culture. If you went to France, you'd learn French and the customs. If you moved to Japan, same thing. Why not in the USA?

Issue with the salad bowl is people can pick what they want out of the salad bowl where you have to accept the melting pot for all the ingredients in there. You either take all of us or none of us. Salad bowl is racist.

It's just logical. If you come to America and are privileged to enjoy our AMERICAN freedom, you need to learn to be an AMERICAN. You don't have to ditch your culture and forget all that has to do with your culture, but you DO need to show appreciation by contributing to AMERICAN society. Basic things like learning English are fundamental things people should do to contribute to American culture. America IS a melting pot. It's a place where anyone of any nationality can come and unite under one banner, one culture as a society. As I said, it's not wrong to still hold on to some traditions and things like that pertaining to your native culture, but assimilation is necessary to American culture. It's what America was founded upon in the first place! Multiple cultures uniting to form a new culture.
@booboobunny5655
@booboobunny5655 3 жыл бұрын
No, assimilation is not necessary. America is a multicultural and diverse country with different kinds of people. There’s nothing to “conform” to.
@coindog6336

@@booboobunny5655 I think they meant that immigrants need to perform civic duties like vote and pay taxes. Learning English is also a benefit to oneself and the people around them. It's hard to get by in America without knowing English. Assimilation means to understand the culture you came into, but still bringing in your own culture and teaching it to others

Becoming bilingual is not cultural assimilation. However, people attempting to mask/lose their accent, conversational norms, values, harmless traditions, and any markers of your ethnic, national, cultural or religious identity completely ARE assimilation. With that in mind, many people do code-switch as they feel it is necessary or it becomes a subconscious behavior. An interesting Q for the masses - if you're code-switching, would you consider that assimilation? Also - it's clear many people are coming to the discussion table without having studied any form of sociology or the difference between the four categories of acculturation...

OMG, I'm a 38yo Euro/American white person and I've been using melting pot for so long because that's what school taught me and I just want to say, I am SO SORRY, I never really thought it through like that, and you're so right, it's so offensive, I feel so horrible because I probably offended so many people in my life, but now is the time to change, I've learned the better thing to say, and I'm going to go forward with that knowledge and be less ignorant. Thank you so much for this knowledge, I'm 1 step further from being an ignorant person.

Another point of the salad bowl analogy is that, all of the separate cultures in America come together to make something greater than the cultures on their own, the cultures don't melt together in to one, but at points in the salad, the flavors combine and complement each other. Allowing for something greater than the cultures on their own

But isn't the meaning of the melting pot rather that different cultures melt together into one new culture in which the individual "ingredients" are not identifiable anymore, instead of simply assimilation?
@ChristianWFL
@ChristianWFL Жыл бұрын
Exactly. And that is what happens continually over and over again. We all meld as one, contrary to the message she is trying to spread. The only way people stick to their “ethnic identity” throughout generations is through racism lol. And only making choices based off their “ethnic identity” . It’s a trash message disguised as modernity

I struggle with the concept that assimilation means conforming to "whiteness". I am paler in complexion and I only speak English and when these statements are made I just feel bad. Like I'm supposed to be different or have to be more accommodating or over the top with a person from another culture. When will the playing field be even for those who happen to live here, are white, and don't care if people assimilate or not. I just want people to be themselves and exist peacefully. How can I wrap my head around this concept more?
@hannahs5707
@hannahs5707 4 жыл бұрын
The point of people sharing this information is not to simply cast blame, but many often make a point without recourse. I think all anyone should be expected to do is to be an ally and speak up for others. You have to come to terms with the fact that you are the standard by which all others are cultural groups are compared - that's just how it is. If you feel any sort of guilt, or just want to be a decent human (not trying to be condescending), all anyone can do is to not force others to change to fit a mold, don't assume, don't judge, and speak up when someone is marginalizing another. For example, if someone tells someone they need to change their accent, say something (many people claim they cannot understand but they're really not trying to/assume they can't because they hear an accent - this has been STUDIED multiple times, look it up). The crazy thing is so many everyday expectations are based on "western values" (IDK how anyone defines that considering Alaska is technically in the west, but I digress). Little things, like African-and descended, Latinos, and South Asians often dedicating nearly 1/3 of the day for whoever agrees to spend time with them rather than cutting up and scheduling up tiny bits of time for people is one simple but VERY overlooked cultural difference- thus the difference in "flexible" arrival to us = "late and inconsiderate" to most White and East Asian people. Again, don't assume. Ask questions, get clarification and speak up. The world would be a better place if people just talked about these things, accepted, and moved on.

We are a melting pot! Cultures from all over. If someone says hey you speak with an accent I don't like it well tough! Get used to it! Someone said to me on another video you're Jewish! Assimilate to American ways and culture! I'd never heard that before! I calmly explained to him that it's my non practiced religion. He assumed I stuck with my own which I've never done. Then I told him I was born here! Shocked the crap out of him. So he assumed I was another culture. I'm not. He assumed I wasn't born here. I was. Assimilate in terms of speaking English knowing one doesn't know yours here yes. But in terms of forget your native tongue if you speak it, abandon your culture no! I think people are smart enough to say I'll speak your language but I won't change anything else to make you more comfortable. I'm of Eastern European decent. Born and bred here same with all my family. Never been to the countries I have mixed in me. But I'm proud of them and won't ditch them to assimilate. The only immigrant in my family is my maternal great grandmother who came in the beginning of the 20th century. She came from Austria-Hungary. She assimilated enough to learn English and that was it. She never forgot where she came from just because she came here! Hypothetically if I moved to a foreign country, learned the language, the laws, become a citizen that would be my assimilation but never would I stop thinking of myself as American because that's my birth and tough if the rest of that country didn't approve.
