51yo, voted in every single election possible (local and federal) that I've been eligible for. Missouri voter, while my state didn't make either list, I'd assume its closer to the low end than high. I just want to compliment you on a straightforward, factual video that did not make ONE political statement (not that any of your videos really do, just saying that a voting one has more of a temptation than others). Thanks!

When it comes to low voter turnout, one can argue that gerrymandering plays a major role
@citrustaco
@citrustaco 26 күн бұрын
One can also argue that being in a very low populated rural area is a major role as well as they may be many miles away from a polling place. Such is life in the middle of nowhere.

If that would be the case then nevada wouldnt have any turnout. Its a swing state where 100% of house races go to one party. Worse than Ohio Worse than Wisconsin Worse than Illinois Worse than New York. Probably the most gerrymandered state in the country Yet nevada still has good turnout.

@@citrustacoI’m reminded of a little town in Lamar County, GA just west of Barnesville called Aldora. Maybe around 100 people live there, but you wouldn’t know it from the latest census, because none of them responded and the recorded population there is zero.

Having voted in both Indiana and Michigan, there are several reasons turnout between the two states is so different. Here are three off the top of my head: 1. Michigan is a swing state where voters feel they have more of an impact on the country than solidly Republican Indiana. 2. It's significantly easier to vote absentee in Michigan than Indiana. Indiana has voters give a justification to vote absentee (which can be rejected), Michigan does not need such a justification. 3. Michigan can pass around petitions that can become statewide ballot initiatives. Indiana does not have such a process for direct democracy. Indiana has had in-person early voting for a longer time, but Michigan has recently caught up, with a ballot initiative in 2022 which allows for early in-person voting starting earlier this year.

@@mdrdprtclI’d have to figure that out for myself. I have relatives in Indiana, but they have a summer place up in Michigan. Probably if I visit then I’ll be able to judge, but for now I assume Michigan’s probably a better state to visit than Indiana because Michigan has much more coastline along the Great Lakes, and plenty of wilderness in the north I’d enjoy if I had a canoe.

Low voter turnout in Indiana is mostly due to the fact that the Democrat party is nearly catatonic here. No competitive races = no reason to vote
@danthemusclefiber
@danthemusclefiber 28 күн бұрын
It was certainly the case in 2020. Trump was a foregone conclusion on the presidential level, Holcomb was a moderate who didn't drive negative voter turnout for the gubernatorial race, and there was no senate race. It sounds like there's a relatively close race for the governor's seat this time around between McCormick and Braun, but I don't know if that will have an effect for turnout.

Being from Tennessee, I'm not surprised we're in the bottom. Not only is the state not competitive, but we have one of the highest rates of felony disenfranchisement. Not only that, but the state is so noncompetitive that nearly all state-level races are decided in the primaries, which typically have about 5-10% turnout. At that rate, practically everyone who votes probably knows the person they're voting for. You don't have to be the best candidate; you just have to be the most popular.

@Newbmann what I find fascinating is that those who are eligible to vote are not registered. And to add to that, most of the people that are not registered to vote, would register Democrat. These people that I have spoken with has stated that they don't see no point in it because there is such a strong Republican hold on the state. I have always argued that if enough people register as an independent or a Democrat, this issue can be fixed. I myself am registered as an independent

I wonder where my home state (Georgia) fares with voter turnout. Due to our recently acquired status as a swing state, I’d imagine we’re in the upper half since there’s a lot more motivation among people to vote, but at the same time we’re not known as the easiest place to vote. The polling station at my family’s hometown had rather long lines in 2020, and folks I know there predict it to be even longer this year, but at least we have some form of early voting.

Oregon born and raised, no surprise they and WA are so high, the conservatives and liberals both are fiercely vocal of their respective causes, a blessing and (increasingly) a curse at the same time for those states. Now I live in Ohio ATM, a former key swing state that has become reliably red after Obama. There's Issue 1 on the state ballot this year which if it passes will end gerrymandering here, so we'll see if voter turnout goes higher or lower thanks to that end result in due time.

It really is a shame that there are states where almost half the population does not, or cannot, vote. Certainly some of this is voter apathy, but in other cases it's just a matter of folks not being able to vote. Whether it's poor vote-by-mail/early voting access or no way to get to the polls in-person on election day, certainly a large portion of those not voting would very much like to vote.
