The poor bore the brunt of the sub-prime and credit crisis of 2008. Today, it is the turn of the middle class. The impoverishment of the American middle class is brutal. In a country that established liberalism as a creed, there is no safety net. For those who lose their jobs, the consequences are instantaneous and dramatic.
Larry Dodson, 52, used to manage a large customer service department. But two years ago he lost his job and house. Today he lives in a motel room with his wife and two children and scraps by on $820 dollars a month, welcoming tourists to Disney World. After he has paid the motel fees, he’s left with just $70 for food and other necessities.
Terry used to be a sales manager and enjoyed a good life until he was made redundant. He ended up roaming from motel to motel in his car and eventually was judged ’economically incapable’ of raising his six children. The three eldest were placed in foster care. There are currently 1,800 children growing up in the motels around Disney World. They move from school to school as their parents are forced to find cheaper accommodation.
We spent six months following the daily life of families likes these, affected by the crisis.
This documentary was produced by Babel Press. It was first released in 2012.

As a adopted kid living in the USA, my mom was a single-parent and took care of me and my sister. We went from trailer parks to a women’s homeless shelter and then finally moved back in with my grandma. We were really poor and I grew up thinking it was normal to struggle so much and it was just apart of growing up. My mom passed away in April 2018 when I was 15 years old and I’m 20 now. Been on my own ever since and when the pandemic started I became homeless and stayed on the streets for two years. I’m doing a lot better now and have my own place! It’s not perfect but hey it’s mine. What I learned was that, in America it’s easier to turn a blind eye towards others suffering than it is to see yourself in their place one day. In reality though, we’re all closer to homelessness than most of us care to admit.

@@HappyLife-nf7wb god bless your heart, my mother was a passionate soul and she always brought people together. I can say with confidence that I got where I am because of the pure kindness and selflessness of others! Someone gave me $5 dollars for gas and there was one time where a complete stranger walked up to me while I was playing guitar in the park and offered me his two chicken sandwiches that he decided to give to me instead. I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for the kindness of a complete stranger.

I am in Scotland, visited Disney on holiday several times, last time I lost my purse which had keys, a fairly large sum of money and passports, a worker chased us down to who found it and refused to accept a reward, I do not believe that would happen anywhere else in the world. This explains very well why I left the US. Back then my family of three (husband and I are scientists with PhD degree) could just barely survive on our income. now I'm back in Germany as a single mother. Here, I easily support my child and I on a 50% job (19.25 hours a week). My child is in the daycare that my employer provides. If I were to lose my job, social security will provide for us, including apartment, daycare etc. The US is a dystopian nightmare

And yet those systems from Germany are considered anti-freedom and communist in the US. Sure, we have to pay a lot for taxes, insurance and healthcare, but if we get sick here in Germany, have an accident or lose our jobs, we will never land on the street without a roof over the head. Just really sad watching this and makes me feel depressed thinking there's no help pretty much and people are left to fend for themselves pretty much.. Being homeless is one thing but having kids to go through it is just unreal.. I can't imagine it. I keep praying to God for these people and myself and family but I'm not sure he will answer my prayers. I'm not sure if one of my prayers have ever been answered. The brother who's probably not even in high school yet is more of a man than his dad. Biologically his dad's an adult, in every other way absolutely not. I looked it up, these two little girls ended up in the care of Daniel's mother. I don't know what happened to Daniel he did get off but he had killed another man before that when he was 15 he was 25 in this documentary. This documentary was filmed around 2008 and made it to being released around 2012 in recent, about 2021, Amber had given birth two more times and legally arrested because these two babies these two extra more babies, were found to have been born with meth in their system. What the general public doesn't realize unless they've been there, that once people are caught in the "poverty loop", life becomes more expensive than somebody that has their life together. Food is more expensive because you're buying it meal by meal with no way to cook, they're burning gas looking for a place to sleep, most likely any bills include late fees, your credit is likely bad which can exclude you from jobs and definitely exclude you from a place to live as well. The things you're not excluded from you will be charged more due to your credit. The uphill battle gets steeper and steeper once you're at this point.

You can come out of it but most likely it takes much longer than most people can deal with it I know from experience the only way out is to find a place to live that you can afford and save the smallest amount of money I lived in the smallest apartment I could find in a rundown area it cost me $100 a week but that included utilities and I had my own shower and bathroom and it had a refrigerator and a stove top so I could cook stuff and keep stuff cold and I worked a seasonal job where I made about for 500 bucks a week for like seven months a year but in the winter time I didn’t make anything except whatever type of work I could come across and it was during the great recession that I was doing this mostly it was just temporary labor jobs or a car wash I worked at McDonald’s for a little while but it took me about six years to finally get my shit together enough to move into a house and to most people they wouldn’t make it six months but like I said the secret is you have to live in someway to save money if you can save $25 a week and $50 a week after your living expenses then you can multiply that number by how many weeks it will take you to advance yourself and if it’s $25 a week you’re able to save well then maybe it will take you Two years of living like that to get them move somewhere else but it’s very hard it’s very hard and there’s a lot of ways to give up

The worst part about this recession is that consumers are racking up credit card debt. In April alone, credit card debt went up 20% while rates have doubled in a year. Inflation is so high that consumers are literally taking debt for basic life necessities. Collapse is near.

Investing is the only way to make your money grow and unless you have an exceptionally high income, investing is the only way most people will ever have enough money to retire. Saved every penny, I could sometimes that meant no Christmas. But eventually I was able to buy my first home. We would go on hikes, outdoor camping or to a lake for family time. How much welfare are these families given per week? I don’t understand how the system works in the USA. I live in England. I know that benefits don’t cover much but it’s enough for a home, utilities & food. In Britain it’s usually previous dept (credit & store card minimum payments) that make life really hard for the long term unemployed. Obviously drugs are part of the ‘real’ homeless problem in Britain. I say “real” because homeless statistics include those in temporary housing, ie people living in hotels, paid for with welfare payments… I assumed that the families in this film were like the British equivalent but it seems like they have to come-up with the rent themselves, without any financial aid!?! ** Do unemployed people need to rely on charity? Why can’t these families get welfare/benefits from a government department? Things are so different in Britain. I complain about UK poverty in “one of the richest countries in the world” but it seems so very much worse in the USA!! 😢 I’m shocked (if it’s true that they aren’t given welfare cheques to pay for rent & living expenses) What happens if they can’t find any work? Are they just thrown out to live on the streets??? It seems crazy to me!! * The government took 3 of their children away because they were so poor. THEN the government pays for those children to be cared for by others??!? WHY not give the family the money? Or at least, more money to buy food, clothes etc??

@@BruceLee-kl3fp I know this response will generate opprobrium, but here goes anyway; In my experience of teaching young people I have noticed, pretty much without exception, that lavishing parental love upon a child builds lifelong strength and confidence in the recipient. This has little to do with the provision of material "stuff." Children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds who were able to rely unequivocally on parental warmth and emotional reinforcement invariably fared better in school than those deprived of this support. Children seemed to flourish, as long as they were bathed in parental love, regardless of their parents' levels of affluence. That is not, of course, to say that childhood deprivation is not a crippling scourge on our most vulnerable citizens.

@@BruceLee-kl3fp Families from deprived backgrounds can easily find themselves in situations where they can't cope. There's no point (or indeed practical value) in wishing things weren't the way they are. I came close to being put into care when, as a toddler, my mother had to shoplift in order to feed me and my father had to beg hand-towels from his site manager to use as makeshift diapers for me and my baby sister. It is only the love I received, which I remember from that period. We lived in a bed-sitting-room with my mother cooking on a two-ring heating element for the four of us. Birthday gifts were being allowed to pick whichever box of budget sweeties we liked best. When my baby sister died, while we were playing, my parents took care of the situation, carefully protecting me from the associated trauma. My mother was already pregnant with my brother. It was only in my teens that my parents explained my baby sister had been suffering from kidney cancer (so they'd even had to deal with that under those deplorable circumstances). I went on to become a senior university lecturer. My brother became a successful session musician and care-worker. Please believe me when I say that without my parents' penniless love, my brother and I would never have pulled through. Being put into care would have been the end of everything for us.

@@evgeniisemanov3399 very broad and inaccurate statement. For example, in australia you might be an unskilled worker as say, a machine operator in a factory. If you are full time, you will get annual leave, sick leave and possibly a semi decent hourly rate thanks to uncomfortable conditions or danger. A part time unskilled worker in a supermarket will not get sick leave or annual leave and will probably get min wage, and as their pay rate goes up, the hours they are given to work goes down. That has been shown to happen in germany since the introduction of min wage as well. Also, what is a 'living wage'? Living for whos expenses? In what area? Living costs are different from suburb to suburb let alone city to city. Should a job a high school kid can do pay for a 2 cars, tvs and a mortgage? Who gets to define what exactly a living wage is? The fact is, if you want to earn more, you either upskill or do a job that others dont want or cannot do. If there is 1000s of people just as capable of doing your job, youre not worth much. 'Living wage' is such a stupid term that is vague and meaningless. You live within your means, and work to earn the means to support the way you want to live.
