Same. Was last homeless back in 2016. Medical bills garnished my paychecks & I had no choice but to give up my house & move into a shite travel trailer! I did so on my own BEFORE I ended up getting evicted & was living in my car for 2 months, & worked like 80 hrs a wk in a Nursing Home as a CNA . I put my stuff into storage. Moving into the trailer saved me around 500 bucks pm. 500 bucks I just didn't have, no matter how hard I worked. I also had a car payment. It's true. It can happen to ANYONE! 🤷‍♀️

Im currently living it this year. Never thought id be a single mom and homeless. Been rough since my divorce after 13 years together, then i lost my job and have had a hard time finding something else for awhile. Ive never been in a situation like this and ive been working since 14 and on my own since 16. Just thankful to have a hotel room for Christmas. I finally found a good job, just doesn't start until Jan 9. This job is going to get my son and I back on our feet and im so happy and grateful for it.

Crazy I was homeless here right when Covid started. I stayed in that same shelter and I was probably one of the only few people not on drugs. Literally almost everyone of those people there were on drugs. It was the worse experience of my life, but I’m so thankful for it because it humbled me like no other.

I really feel for these people. I remember looking around town on my bicycle for a place i might be able to safely sleep. I was a stones throw from being houseless. I was frightened and depressed. I had applied for a HUD apartment and had been waiting 3 years. My number finally came up. I so appreciate every little thing i have. It's a blessing!

Yes that's right! 5 years ago at the age of 6o I too became homeless because my entire town burned down! Imagine about 30 thousand people all at the same time trying to find shelter,it's an experience I would never wish anyone. After 4 years and finally being able to find a permanent home, whenever I see someone less fortunate I do what ever I can to help such as getting food, a cold drink and maybe a simple conversation because I will never forget those very difficult times!

Suddenly there were 30,000 people relying on another town for housing, food and basic needs. Even healthcare became hard to find. As a baby boomer in bad health and on social security only, if my only child and her family hadn't taken me in, I would be one of the many living on the streets. During Covid, I went through all of my savings and ended up having to sell my car because I couldn't afford the repairs. My heart breaks whenever I see or hear of the elderly that are homeless.

My nephew became homeless with the housing crash in Cali 2008, Lost his business which was moving people from one house to another. Then the Santa Rosa fires burnt Him out of the house he was living in as the entire subdivision was leveled. He rented a space in a barn. He died of heart failure a year after the fires.

Condolences 💐. I had a business in San Diego but with the economy crash we left in 2007. So many tried to stop us friends and family but numbers never lie and it was going to get bad. 2008 was probably the worst year in California, friends and family were trying to leave but their was no money with no jobs. It costed us almost $10k to relocate all across to the Midwest. Worth it to this day.

The rent increase is real. Just before I moved into my new house my apartment announced they were raising the rent from $950 to $1400 a month. I could afford that because that was what my future mortgage payment was going to be but I ended up having to go month to month because Covid led to supply shortages that indefinitely delayed my build and I had no clue when it would be done, the homebuilder wouldn't give me a closing date so I couldn't sign a long term lease. Month to month shot up from &1450 a month before covid to $2150 a month. I ended up blowing through all my savings to cover rent and I just barely moved in as I was down to my last $100 that wasn't tied up in the down payment for the house, closing costs, etc. I was actually contemplating living out of my car in the Costco parking lot next to the school I worked at before I finally received the news that house would be completed

A lot of financial professionals especially the one I work with Samuel Peter Descovich agree that one should not spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent. That means you need to make a minimum of about $80,000. Interesting considering the median income is $54,000.

Of the 23 ophthalmologists in your hometown (population 1.5 million) the one with the shortest waiting list says „We can check your eyes in SIX weeks.“ So you go to a private ophthalmologist and pay €278,- to have your eyes checked. A disgrace. Here in Switzerland I pay a lot more for my own health insurance, but the longest I had to wait for an appointment was two days. 48 hours. And when I told them that in Bavaria it takes at least six weeks, they laugh it off („Well, now you’re in Switzerland. Forget Germany.“)

When working in Montana I filed for disability. My lower back is terrible shape. I was told within a year I would have it. It took longer and my money run out. One Sunday after church I packed up my things and went to a shelter in the town nearby. I fared better than most. Some people had no transportation or anything. It took another six months until everything was approved. There's alot if the population who's one month between having a house and homelessness. Thanks for sharing.

I was homeless for 3 years, thanks to LAFH I recovered from homelessness within a year after being housed, and it's been almost 5 years since then I've always have had a job, and now have two jobs, so I'm paying back to the economy fast & plenty. We need more people to help, there's not enough!!! it took over half a year for LAFH to get me housed after applied. I appreciate their support and efforts and will make donations when I build better wealth. Huge homelessness means poor leadership!

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm a single mom and we've been homeless for about 2.5 months now. I finally found a new great paying job, but it doesn't start until January 9th. We stay in hotels when we have money, but usually we live in my car. This new job will get us back on our feet, thankfully. It's the getting by until then that's difficult. But, I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I know this rough time won't last forever. I've never gone through something like this before and im 47. I've been working since 14 and moved out at 16. I won't lie, it's been scary.

@@frauditorreaper Thank you! Even though I'm always neat, tidy & ultra hygienic. Took showers at least 5 days a week during homelessness. Job recruiters can sense that something's wrong, I could see it in their eyes, and I couldn't get a job. When I looked at people's faces they seemed so well nourished and pampered to me, although they're just regular people, that's because they have a shelter. My paradigm (the way I saw the world) was compromised which was further depressing. I probably looked awful during those years, hardly employable. Right now I feel like I don't even have to sell myself, I can get hired easily. But when I was homeless, I couldn't get a job. Don't get me wrong I don't judge a book by it's cover myself, but unfortunately that's how I witnessed it that people perhaps subconsciously judged me by the way I appeared & adequate trust couldn't be established... I wish you a good luck, and good for you being able to get a job so fast!!!

I thank God for my mother. After tearing up my right arm are a third time due to lifting heavy patients; she held my settlement money. We looked for something I could manage if I became totally disabled. That was 30 years ago. I bought a small double wide with the money. Best move I ever made. I thank her for making me listen. Rent is high in Orlando, but it has been for a while. There's affordable places to live all over, just not in as trendy of places as the major metros. Tiny 'luxury' home communities are going up but its literally just apartments made to look like houses. They go for 2400 for a two bedroom that my friend has. I'm making 23$/hr but it feels like life was more affordable when i was making 13.79/hr back in 2017. I was paying 900$ for a nice one bedroom. Now? That same unit 1400-1800 easy. They were office jobs that paid anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 per year for a 40 hour a week job and that was considered a good job. What were young people supposed to do back then? I lost my daughter last Easter. She had mental illness her landlord raised her rent almost $400 a month, she couldn't possibly pay that increase. My mom left me a house, I live just outside Yuma. My daughter wouldn't be able to get services here. My insurances and taxes have gone up so much just in 3 years Idk if I'll be able to keep my house. I'm 58 with severe disabilities. I'm very afraid of what's going to happen, I'm afraid for my son too. I'll never know my grandchildren because my son can't afford to have kids.

Government should help citizens first with housing assistance. Based on income, housing assistance should be paid to landlords, especially for seniors and veterans. Citizens should be able to apply for housing assistance prior to being evicted. It might save everyone money in the long run.

I became homeless in 2012. I was 52, my job had recently been outsourced and my marriage ended. For five years I slept after hours in a toy store which belonged to a friend of mine. In 2017 the local department of health told my friend that it was illegal for him to have a homeless man sleep in his store. This was in Pomona, New York. I immigrated to Israel where I work as a janitor, rent a small apartment and I live normally. The solution to homelessness is very simple: abolish single family zoning and institute a guaranteed minimum income. Obviously there needs to be national health insurance. This isn't quantum physics however Americans don't care if poor people die. Which is why US life expectancy is falling. I was a patriotic American my entire life. Not anymore. After paying so much in taxes for so many years I was dumped onto the street to die in the middle of a New York winter.

The United States gave $3.3 billion to Israel in 2022. The budget for the US Mint was $4.4 billion in 2023. The budget for the Secret Service was $2.9 billion in 2023. Jeff Bezos has a personal net worth greater than all the aid ever given by the US to Israel.

they need to stop real estate INVESTORS from taking housing away from us all. it's WAY too late for rent control. investors should never have been allowed to make a business out of our lives. why did he he pay all of those medical bills? he should not have used all of his money. not sure if this is an option but i got a car with no down from hertz sales once. a minivan to live in would beat the heck out of all that crap.

I am 58 in BC Canada I have a disability but by the grace of god I was able to get into a 55yrs and older seniors apartment building 3 months ago. It has many support amenities and my life is stable again but the homeless crisis is not going away. I have a pt job and can barely make ends meet.

in Finland they give the homeless a solo apartment and also get them help with their problems. It gives them a breathing space to sort themselves out and start again. They have found that it not only gets people off the street, gives them some dignity, it is cost effective compared to not doing anything but provide day time shelters so the old problems continue.

She didn't answer the question about preventing rent increases. She avoided it. Which is what's driving a lot of people to homeless status. Rent maximizers. They don't care how much they raise the rent as long as they have someone else that will pay it.

Don't you remember just a couple years ago when landlords were NOT allowed to evict because of the "C" disease. *Lots* of lowlifes simply stopped paying rent knowing they couldn't be evicted.

One idea to counter that is if landlords raise rents that dramatically, a dramatic increase in property taxes on that property should also apply. That new property tax revenue can then be used to help at-risk people, who can't afford these new rent increase, pay the new rental fees.

Maybe the reason the rents are increasing as fast as they are is BECAUSE the government is increasing the taxes. I have one rental house and its in a decent area so I am blessed with good renters now. BUT my last renters DESTROYED my house, and caused $6,000 in damages. So being a landlord is not all fun and games. And when covid hit, many states allowed renters to NOT pay rent even though they could. BUT the landlord still had to pay the government taxes and insurance costs. The rent I receive is part of my retirement income, most landlord have less than 4 units and need that to survive too. @@Wasserkaktus

In 2012 I went homeless in Phoenix AZ. Worst part of my life and its due to that economy. I was lucky enough to have a friend take me in back east and I am doing better and back to normal. AZ was one of the worst places I have ever lived. Stay away. I lived in a hotel for 2 weeks downtown with drug dealers knocking at my door at 2 am. Had to pay everyday or get kicked out by sheriff who was there everyday removing people at 9am. Great place to live! I went from making 75k a year in another state, moved there for a job and within 2 months was fired and homeless because I spent my savings moving west just to find out the people out there are out for themselves and wont hesitate to take your job and livelyhood away in a second. I lost everything I had. Pictures I cant replace, and family keepsakes I couldnt take with me. Thanks Arizona, your a stain in the dirt! I will never forget you POS state!

The city of Phoenix shouldn't exist at all. The city had to put restrictions on home building because of water rights. Developers were just building homes without securing water and scamming people. There's simply way too many people here that need to go away. The homesless shelters in South Dakota are empty meanwhile ours are over loaded.

This sounds so much like what happened to our family. My daughter was diagnosed with 120 degree scoliosis. Our insurance would not cover the surgery until her rib punctured her heart which was 1/4" away. Shriner's of St Louis did her operations which cost 5.5 million dollars. There were so many other things that added up including transportation to and from Kansas, audiologist blood which the red cross charged us $1500 x 6 a pint up front for each operation, x rays, doctors at home, time lost from work. My antiques store was closed more than open so we depended on my husband's salary. It was all too much for him to handle including also having an autistic son in special education so he left us. When he left I was unable to pay the mortgage and insurance on both my home and business. The kids and I got a one room studio apartment. I finally had a nervous breakdown and now we are all living in a studio sized public housing tower. My 1995 Jeep Cherokee was stolen so we are riding buses everywhere. My autistic son rides three buses each way to get back and forth to the community college. We are a paycheck away from homelessness and will never recover.

The Pandemic could last for a few years but the homelessness crisis could be forever for someone and it was a global issue. We have a homelessness problem in Australia but there are fewer than US because of a smaller population. Thanks for the clips and I have subscribed it.

I lived here at CASS Shelter from October 2022 til November 2023. I've seen some of the craziest things in the "Zone". So many deaths, stabbings, and fires. It was definitely a time 💯
