Jon has lots of interesting data, and good points, but his personal blind-spots guarantee that he draws bad conclusions. Take healthcare: The UK has universal healthcare. You're 2.5× more likely to die from the flu in the UK than in the US, once you adjust for population sizes. You're 2× more likely to catch a secondary infection in the hospital. You're 2× more likely to die from said secondary infection. Their average cancer survival rate at 5 years is 18% lower than ours (provided you're not cherry-picking survival rates of particular cancers). Nope. I much prefer our system where you're 1/4 as likely to die in the hospital and ~1/3 as likely to die from the annual flu. Don't even get me started on Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans. I *do* however agree that government takes far too much money only to pay for its own benefit. It's a parasite that has grown far too large.

@@EMTedroniWell one of the reasons you are less likely to die in an american hospital, is that palliative care is not covered a lot of the time. So they send you home to die there. Also the General lower life expectancy and other metrics really dont seem in favor of the american healthcare system. Maybe the specific things compared to the UK are, but in general its not looking good.
@Schmiduku
@Schmiduku Жыл бұрын
@@EMTedronithose points are valid, but also don’t matter much if you’re in a financial position where you’d rather not go to the hospital or take an ambulance no matter how bad the emergency. I’m not exactly enjoying the benefit of not catching a secondary illness from the hospital if I can’t afford hospital care, am I? If any number of people avoid seeking care in a medical system for its cost, it fundamentally fails as a system. I’d rather live in a system where if I need essential care, I’m not so worried about money that I’m willing to let the problem fester and get worse. Or ration out prescriptions for an emergency supply because I’m still working on my deductible in August and $200 a month in medication is starting to really hurt my bank account. If I’m that worried about dying from the flu in England, I’ll mask up the second flu season rolls around and get the annual vaccine. The overall security of universal healthcare overwhelmingly outweighs any benefits our system provides. Yes, the treatments available here in the US are often among the most excellent in the world, but it’s often less a question of how good it is and more of if you can afford it. Our system is heartless because it’s privatized, and private companies are 100% obligated to choose the financial interests of their shareholders instead of the wellbeing and livelihood of the people they end up preying upon. I hope you continue to enjoy our system, because for a lot of people, it’s not as much of an essential service as it is a luxury that only certain classes of people can comfortably enjoy.

@@EMTedroniwhat insane American would drop $10k to get treated for the flu? True story, a manager I worked with had saved up for a car. Had a bad fever one day, so he went to the hospital for a few hours. Had to start from square one saving for the car again. Almost everybody has a story like this. Mine was a $12k bike accident. No tests, just a student stitched my head and I was shown the door. Took the stitches out myself. Maybe your bias guarantees your take. Maybe mine does, too.

@@ErikratKhandnalie Because any ideology in its extreme form is bad and because historically communism is bad. It has never worked out in history of man... It starts out good until it creates an elite controlling the state and all value while citizens suffer and society crumbles. Capitalism in its purest form is not much different where citizens end up slaving lousy jobs while an elite takes all profits. The only thing that seems to really work well in the capitalist global economical system we have is if it is built on a foundation of socialism. That way there is still motivation to work hard in order to get richer while also making sure there is a taxfunded security system that provides a working and unpartial policeforce, Healthcare, wellfare and education for all. That way most of the population will have the same opportunity for success nomatter being born into privilidge or not. It allows the unfortunate to work hard and break their social inherritance while those who are down on their luck or hit by sickness and bad luck have a chance of getting back on their feet. Americas socialist side is allmost gone because americans have been duped for generations into thinking capitalism benefits them all... Somehow they keep believing taxcuts will make them all rich and forget that corporations are stealing all the profits for a small elite while the majority works long hours for lousy pay. And with that lousy pay they have to pay for healthcare, education and everything else. If they loose the abillity to work even for a short while they will be put out on the street and left to rot. That is exactly why america has a rising homless problem with mentally ill and ppl down on their luck roaming the streets in tent villages. Governments are to protect the unfortunate and weak. We start by realizing that the tax and spend description is not accurate. The Tax and Spend description is accurate for other countries and for US state and local governments, but that description is not accurate for the US federal government. All federal expenditures are funded by checks drafted on the Treasury General Account. All tax revenue and revenue from the sell of Treasury bonds and bills are deposited into this account. But the TGA is at the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Reserve has no money. The Federal Reserve has liability records accounting for all American money in existence, but it has no money. When check are drafted on the TGA, a liability record is created and the matching money is sent to the recipient. When money is deposited into the TGA, it is matched with liability records and destroyed. So, our taxes and securities fund nothing. They are collected only to control inflation. Insurance agent here. This is exactly true. We give money to the insurance company and they give us medical care but because they're for-profit, they can only make profit is they collect more money than what they spend. That's why they try to find the least expensive route to do anything. They want you to do physical therapy because a lot of the time physical therapy does help and more importantly it's cheaper than everyone getting a CAT scan when they get hurt. And things like the deductible are there to deter you from using your insurance. A good deductible keeps people from going to the ER for every scratch and bump. But it can be abused because it the higher the deductible the less likely you are to go to the doctor. Low income families are more likely to have lower premium plans but then that gives them higher deductible and OOP. So the people who spend the most, who need healthcare the most are the greatest money makers for insurance companies. Even better if the person is on Medicaid because then the government pays for everything, the insurance company can give bare bones care and walk away with a bunch of profit. Poor people are the main product for insurance companies. For profit healthcare is a contradiction in terms
@gaiustacitus4242
@gaiustacitus4242 7 ай бұрын
You omitted one very important point, that being the insurance industry only averages a 1.8% to 2.0% profit rate. That is well below the 5% average profit earned by businesses within these United States. If the insurance industry did not make efforts to control costs, then the price of insurance would increase to a point that it becomes completely unaffordable (much as it has done under ObamaCare for people who do not qualify for subsidies paid for by those who have higher incomes).
@69sound81
@69sound81 7 ай бұрын
@@gaiustacitus4242 have you ever thought about doctors and hospitals driving up the costs? Listen... I live in Mexico and I have a family business that manufactures veterinary medicines for chicken. We are small, so we compete by using the very best gross products to create our stuff and then we have a 99% production quality control. That means we buy human grade antibiotics and essential salts like Cyprofloxacin and others and we checkat least 99 pieces out of every 100 we make. Often it is more like 99.9%. We know how cheapnor expensive products are and if we buy US imported products we get lower quality and higher cost (not by much though) than if we buy from China, India and Pakistan. But it is weird how that 2% higher cost then turns into a 3 times the cost when processed. Here in mexico we pay a third or less than you guys for the same medicines. And the same goes for doctors. Health ain't cheap and it doesn't matter where tou go in the world, but you guys can pay a brand new car in a hospital and you guys find it normal? Sorry but insurance companies are scamming you guys and they are also getting scammed. And we dont have a good public health care program, but even private is much cheaper than your insurance.
@mrkshply
@mrkshply 7 ай бұрын
@@gaiustacitus4242 those subsidies are paid for by the government. Also the different insurance "plans" are a method of breaking people up into classes so no, the rich don't pay for the poor. We pay for the poor You are correct that the profits insurance companies are allowed to get are limited thx to the government but it's not as simple as sell insurance- make profit. Insurance companies are massively profitable. The argument to "control costs" was the con they pulled on the government to make advantage plans. They "control costs" by denying care. For profit healthcare is a contradiction in terms.

@@Steve-sg3uzAre you dense… It isn’t free, both you and the neighbor pay into it like insurance, except there is less loss to profit hungry executives and unnecessary employees(see- “scam artists”) in the insurance industry. In america we pay FOURFOLD what we should for health services. We pay a heap of taxes to the government, which aren’t really used for healthcare that much. We then pay the insurance company, which by the way, has not negotiated prices whatsoever with the pharmaceutical industry, so they will charge the insurance company several times what they charge governments in countries with good public healthcare services. Then we pay a copay, which isn’t a small amount most of the time by the way. So we pay for taxes, insurance, price-hiked services, and a copay, just for average healthcare. Whereas in a proper modern system that is people-first, you pay the government, it uses that money to pay doctors directly, and on the side has a committee that must be transparent in its process of negotiating with pharmaceutical companies and service providers to keep costs from inflating. It works in many countries that have better healthcare than us… I feel like you are just ignoring the facts here

No. This is another lie told. The vast majority of insurance in American is funded by the company you work for and they hire the insurance company to manage the fund and comply with the law. They make a modest income from it. BCBS made around 4% in 2022 which means if they were greedy-evil-capitalist they would close up shop and stop doing it because they would make more money investing in other companies. Many medical insurance companies are non-profits and many were started by churches.

@@uria702If bribery was made illegal, the backroom deals could be prosecuted and we could sue them. I moved from California 24 years ago to a country Americans are told is poor, but quality of life is 1000% better. The free medical system is excellent, even house calls, clinics in every neighborhood so same day appointments. Free excellent university, most people over own their homes free of debt, long family leave, up to 3 years full salary paid, minimum 58 paid vacation, excellent safe public transportation including beautiful subways, electric trams, buses, trollies, ride share, suburban trains, clean safe streets, very low crime rates, my adopted city has 600 beautiful parks open 24/7 that are safe, 2000% better access to culture such as art, museums, drama, classical music, no homelessness. I live very well on $1500 a month that is far more socially and culturally active than even possible back in California when I was making $235,000 a year. I send money every month to relatives back in the US, to cover a few of the outrageous costs that are not paid in any honest country. That $1500 a month is for me and my long term live in girlfriend. Americans live a substandard quality of life, and die in debt. Imagine what life would be like if there was no college debt, no mortgage, no medical costs, or medication 100-1000 times higher then the rest of the world. Comparing the life options and life enhancement, and lack of debt in countries where bribery is illegal versus the US where no law or bill has been passed in 50 years that did not primarily benefit the corporation or wealthy person who paid for it. Look at the infrastructure, dirty crime ridden streets, expensive poor quality transportation systems and corruption in the government, and how Americans claim to be rich and advanced is just laughable.The approaching crash that are already started is going to crush any family which has any debt.. Covid-19 or having no income for a year was no problem, no one lost their homes, or defaulted on loans. Most people just left the city to stay in their summer home to live with good health. Yes, most city people also have a rural summer home where they tend gardens, swim, hike and life very healthy lives. That was common even in the US 40-80 years ago. To reach mine 50km from my city center home cost $0.64. If I was a citizen it would be free due to my age. Americans have very limited cultural lives, a play means flying to NYC for $200 a seat, opera at the MET, which is not a great theater, the last time I was there was $1800 for two. Here, I have a choice of 6 different opera houses every night, for $20 or less. Free to students even if not citizens. I am walking distance to 243 drama theaters, 278 world class museums, 54 classical music theaters and 13,000 4 or 5 star rated restaurants, while Americans eat 64% of all meals at Fastfood crap food that has created the fattest and least healthy population in the world, who can't afford medical care. The poor quality of life in the US is due in large part by the corruption of the federal government owned by wealthy and corporations.

@@garysmokesmeat I'm retracting my previous reply. I apologize, there was a lot of judgement and anger in it, that's not going to help the cause. What I'm referring to in the original post is Regan's idea of Supply-side economics. He gave major tax cuts to corporations in the 80s with the theory that they would eventually share the wealth. This was further enhanced with the Bush tax cuts in the early 2000s, and further enriched with rulings such as Citizens United. The reality of this is that we have effectively built a massive welfare system for the ultra wealthy, many of whom have not "earned" any of their hoard. Donald Trump is an example of this, he's done nothing but cheat people out of money since his father gave him a very small loan of $1 million. Meanwhile, the average American can't afford to live in this country. Literally. CEOs of PBMs extort the system so that, as John points out in this video, they get government subsidies while fleecing the people. The average American has to have 2 incomes to just make ends meet. We demonize the single mother who works 20 hours a day at 3 different jobs for subminimum wage because she has to apply for SNAP to feed her children. But when a Billionaire who doesn't pay taxes gets literally hundreds of billions from government subsidies to build a megga yacht with a dock for another slightly smaller mega yacht, the we call him successful. He works less to "earn" that than the disabled veteran who lost an arm in a 20 year occupation protecting oil interests. But that same hero has to work overtime until his grandchildren are dead and gone just to keep up with inflation. No, it's not their job to share the wealth. And it's not our job to save them when they fail...but here we are. Another failed crypto bank and the American people pay for it. That's not how capitalism works, that's how oligarchy works. It's not our job to pay for their play dates in the upper atmosphere. If he wants to build a cock rocket, then he should work harder to earn the money he needs for it. Pull himself up by the bootstraps. But, that's not what we have. We have a system that takes from the most vulnerable who work hard to "earn" their pay and give it to the rich and entitled so that they can enjoy all of the things that we literally put our blood, sweat and tears into. We, the people, run the factories, plow the fields, dig the mines and build the cities that they trade...but we can't afford the goods from the factories, the food from the fields, the coal from the mines or the homes in the cities... There's a disconnect, and it's not the People. It's the Bull that looms over our country feeding off of the poor, tired, and broken masses.

Knowledge solves every problem. Our innocent belief that taxes fund the federal government ties us to it with Stockholm pressure. That is why congress no longer creates a budget. There is nothing to budget. Whatever funding is approved by congress is created. Economyanswers.org

Huge corporations claim they can't afford to pay their workers more and that if minimum wage went up, prices would have to skyrocket to subsidize the losses. Meanwhile prices continue to go up, as do their profits, and in many cases, their number of employees goes down as they make fewer people do more work, all despite there not being any significant increases to minimum wage. But society encourages ignorance, leading to many people hearing only the partial logic of "they would need to get the money from somewhere" and thus incorrectly believing that paying people more would cause more issues.
