Just mentioned that on another Arroyo Seco vid. On one entrance there isn't any on ramp at all, just a stop sign before you enter, go from 0 to 50 and pray not to be mauled.
@DerekVuong77994 ай бұрын
back in college this is where we would legally test our 0 to 60 runs. Due to the stop sign you have to floor it to keep up with traffic and the curves on this freeway were so much fun.

I grew up in Silverlake, and whenever I went driving on The 110, I always noticed how different it looked from the other freeways. It literally has NO SHOULDERS and driving on it is extremely scary. As a kid, however, I loved the tunnels.

I’ve driven it before, and coming from driving in Arizona and the South, it was one of the most dangerous, scenic, and thrilling rides. The speed limit is 45 in a lot of places, but locals do like 80. I was doing 60 and having traffic fly by me

There is a fuckton of interesting stuff in and around the arroyo seco. Cawston Ostrich Ranch? Bachtelder Tile Studio? Anyway, great video. I don’t think you truly captured the terror of entering or exiting the Pasadena Fwy, but oh well.
@fourth_place9 ай бұрын
The one shot I forgot to capture! Living in and around the area has made the freeway entry much less terrifying. After the 20th time stepping on the gas peddle to go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, you pretty much just hope for the best lol.

4:32 - It took way too long for people to comprehend that multiple lanes of high speed traffic going in opposite directions absolutely had to have strong barriers separating them. One slight mistake and you had a head-on crash with catastrophic results, as this 1940s photo clearly shows. It also took years for tests to determine what such a barrier needed to be, since regular metal guardrails were inadequate.

It was the "Pasadena Freeway" when I lived there in the 1950s thru the 80s. When did the name change? Freeways had names: Hollywood, Harbor, San Bernardino, and Pasadena, all meeting at the four level interchange.
@fourth_place9 ай бұрын
It never really changed culturally! Instead of “The Pasadena Freeway” and “The Hollywood Freeway” It’s now “The 110” and “The 101” and “The 605”. Older folks tend to use the old terminology while the younger generations use the numbering system. What makes this unique to california is that in other places, you don’t use “The” in front of the highway. Everywhere else in the country it’s “I-95” and “I-25”. I could make a whole video on this..and I will! b”Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out! :)

@@fourth_place In Canada the highways often use the article "the": the 400, the 401, the QEW, the Sea-to-Sky, the 407, the Gardiner, the DVP, etc.

I've gone up & down the Parkway thousands of times in a car, hundreds on a motorcycle~ I love the drive, it's really beautiful, but the kamikaze exits can get spicy, 🤭especially for people expecting the standard, long exits. I'm always checking my 6:00 when stopped at some of those micro-ramps😳😂😂

For real. I love how confidently incorrect he is to start the video. It’s also worth noting that Lake Shore Drive in Chicago predates Arroyo Seco and is longer. Inspiration for Arroyo Seco came from visiting existing roads in the Midwest and on the East Coast, not the other way around.

echo park isnt greater los angeles. historically Pasadena always sought to be independent from LA. They built the parkway most likely so people could commute to LA from their neighborhoods outside of the city.

I live in pasadena. The freeway is frankly an outdated relic that should be removed. Its sad that the thousands of trains tracks in los angeles were all ripped out by the auto industry, yet this abomination is praised. The cycle events 1 a year truly show how bad cars are for society, and how for a fraction of the cost we could have actual 1st class public transit instead of the car infested hellhole we have created today. LA 100 years ago had over 2500 miles of train track. Today it doesnt even have a 1/10th of that. Its sad that one of the richest cities of the richest country in the world has destroyed its streets.

Limited-access parkway is synonymous with "freeway" of which there were quite a few limited access parkways built long before this one. So claiming first status is questionable.
