I am originally from Palmdale. Attended Palmdale High and middle school there. We used to go out to California City On Our dirt bikes. It was strange to see a desert with roads cut through it everywhere. Fire hydrants and for sale signs everywhere. But the community population was slow to increase. And now they do actually have quite a few residents out there. But I remember before the residents lived there, you would get a strange feeling being in the future California City. And I was never able to explain the feeling I was getting but it was different than anything I've ever felt before. Must have been because it was a modern day Ghost Town. I remember going out there with my folks and all there was, was a few small offices that served as real estate offices. The Antelope Valley was not for everybody. You either love the desert or you didn't. I will always love the desert and have a personal respect for it.

Its not Abandoned. California City has over 14, 000 people living there, people go there for the near by dirt biking etc, I stayed in one of the nicest Best Western Hotels I have stayed in years, has McDonald's , Subway, Rite Aid , Dollar General and a Grocery Store, there is even a VFW. There is a Edwards Air Force Base near by and a prison so some people live there that work at those places

Not gonna lie, as a disillusioned millennial in the tech sector I'm thinking of buying property there. City Life is just so fast and the second you stop you've been passed by somebody just a little less tired than you.

There is also Ridgecrest about north of there, that area has medical/hospital , Walmart etc. Big naval air Base just outside of the cityy

This city can grow so much if they really tried. Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Palmdale and Bakersfield aren’t too far. Lots of land a super cheap compared to other cities. They just need to have huge job opportunities.

@@drumdude46 I read that you are allowed to camp on your property 6 months a year. You would still have to hook up your RV to utilities, though. So no off-grid outhouse stuff. I suppose a workaround for cheap living would be to buy a lot in CA City and a 2nd cheapo lot somewhere else, say Bombay Beach, and split your time at each place... But I would recommend that you go to California City's website and download the code of ordinances. I am not an expert 😅

Lets keep it real California city is growing for I have bought there, and in the last 2 years Ive seen more houses being built there ,there even is McDonalds , gas stations a local park pond, schools ect. EVEN A HAIR SALON there is lots to do there and its growing real estate properties are going up in price and people are moving to california city in huge numbers. This video literally underestimates what really is going on in california city there perhaps I should make a video of what truly actually is in california city because it is an amazing growing city is becoming and its not an empty small town like this video makes it to be, coming from a local in California City resident and there are more houses spread apart.

@@bnp2bnp growing is one thing, by what exponent is the question. I happen to work in the tech sector and buying up property there wouldn’t put much of a dent in my finances. The real question is what’s my ROI on it. Pardon for saying it but there isn’t much gain to be harvested from boomers with an expiry date and people eating McDonald’s. Looking at pop. data it’s looking like a possible bell curve. Not enough young people introduced or babies being born into the population. It’s particularly hard to push young people out of the cities because we want things to do.

I actually have a lot that I bought out there, 21 acres, its 17 miles from the city center, but it has beautiful views and is super quiet - except during holidays when all the offroad folks come out.

You are getting Calif City and California Valley mixed up. The development you cite is actually west of McKittrick and off Hwy 58 which goes across the Temblor Range. More earthquakes than any place else in the world with the exception of Parkfield.

Great potential housing and business development for people facing homelessness: A planned community offering full social services - with a goal of self-sustainability and growth. Garcetti, Newsom & others should seriously put that idea on the table. At least there won't be "NIMH" mentality, because what's out there right now is pretty much one giant meth lab. One major problem has to do with climate and water supply. California has always been on life-support when it comes to water, and the wildfire problem gets worse every year. Pipes were laid decades ago, when the irrigation of California didn't present as much of the urgent challenge it has become. I'm not sure building on unoccupied land in the desert is the most feasible answer to the U.S.'s crisis in fair/affordable housing, but it's a wonderful thought.

I know someone who lived in the desert outside Albuquerque for many years, raised his kids there, etc. His neighborhood was sparsely settled, with dirt roads. Then his employer transferred him to California. Where did he and his wife choose to live? California City! The street his house was on looked like a normal southern California suburb. When he retired, they moved back to New Mexico, but this time to Las Cruces, to be near their kids and grandkids. However, with certain health issues, they have moved back to their former town outside Albuquerque to be close to doctors and treatment centers. He grew up high in the Rockies, but has spent his adult life in the desert. At the time they were living in California City, we were driving by the area. Unfortunately, they were out of town, so we didn't get to see them. However, we had lunch at the McDonald's in town. McDonald's is proof it's not an abandoned city! East of Palm Springs and Indio, along I-10, are some truly abandoned developments. Even the palm trees are dead.

Ghost towns once boomed with residence in houses and buildings then for some odd reason were abandoned. California City never boomed so it is not a ghost town. It has 51,000 residencial empty lots owned by individuals paying unusually high property taxes to Kern county. Only a small city centeral part is lived in by 14,000 residence with schools and all nessessary amenities who like it there enough to not abandon it. Many years from now it could get many more owner occupants to finally build it up somewhat but only time will tell. Right now many squatters stay in the outer uninhabited areas illegally setting up shop and residence. Trespassers drive and ride over the empty lots who don't care about anything, they litter ruin the ecology there and take anything that isn't firmly attached! The city code enforcement and city police are overwhelmed by this problem that will not go away any time soon.😡

No. We’re living here. People own that land. It is private property. Some vacation others live here full time. This is a complete lie. The city has over 14,000 people and has been inhabited since its inception. This is categorically false. There are places to ride and BLM nearby but also turtle sanctuaries so don’t believe these lies. Do your proper research. There’s even a few Facebook groups and pages for Cal City. You can get OHV permits at several stores including Ace hardware. Mc Donalds by the golf course and Central Park (open 8 am to 8 pm) has RV and big rig 🚛 parking. Come and enjoy our desert. But know that we love and live out here. So please respect it.
