Man talk about amazing news!!!!! I firmly believe we are living in a renaissance of preserving steam locomotives, and the resurgence of America’s railroads. I’m a huge history dork and I love American history; and what’s more American than trains? The trains built this great nation, and seeing this make me happy to see that American history is being preserved. Well, not just persevered, but brought back to life. As always love you guys and love your videos, y’all are a real treat to listen to. Andy

Hi! We AGREE! We love to see a steam locomotive running but running where? So many trains are not used much. D and RGW 315 moved to Chama just so they could run it often. And WOW! Yes! More track is great! And the restoration of the Mc Gill depot is wonderful!

This will be a gigantic shot in the arm for the little town of McGill. When the mill shut down almost everyone had written McGill off-destined to slowly fade away into the desert as its population, mostly retired Kennecott workers, aged and died or moved away. I see a new day dawning for this lonely little town on the edge of nowhere. Miracles do happen!

I am from northern Minn. and live near Ely, Mn. On a trip to Reno in 2002 , I detoured to Ely, Nv just to see the place, another mining area like up here. I drove through McGill and immediately recognized a "mining town" because all the houses were identical like early mine "locations" around here. I was last through there in 2009 and at that time there was talk of reopening the entire line north because someone was proposing to fix the tracks from the UP junction south to Currie to use as railcar storage due to the recession. NN had replaced the tracks at the first mainline crossing of Hwy 93 north of Ely because of highway reconstruction and didn't want that crossing lost or buried. I loved that fact that the entire yard, etc. was still intact. One thing about my area. The railroads are still running, although now owned by CN, and iron ore mining is still in progress as it has been for nearly 140 years. However most of the old shops.etc., are gone and CN "discourages" wandering around on their properties and right of ways.
@ToyManTelevision3 жыл бұрын
Wow thanks! Yeah there has been a rumor from time to time about reopening the whole railroad. I think it’s possible, but I don’t know if it will ever really happen. But this new line will really help Mc Gill. McGill is one of those towns that sort of flounders a lot. At one time it was quite a nice town. But no money, still a fair number of people there but just nothing going on.

WOW!! Great news that the line is to be restored with the depot restored. Hats off to Nevada Northern for success in getting funding! This will be a GREAT boost for tourism in the area! Wondering what the mileage from Ely to the depot will be? Any details yet on estimated time of line restoration? Great news to me! You made my day!
@ToyManTelevision3 жыл бұрын
About 15 miles. So this will give them 4 routes! Ely to keystone. (18 miles?) Ely to the cherry Creek depot at the white pines county museum (1/2 mile) Ely to the Curie depot and star theater at the old upper mill line. (15 miles?). And now Mc Gill.

I went on Google earth and was able to see what you showed. It makes more sense to me now that I had a look for my self. Honestly I thought they would rebuild toward the Union Pacific first but the other place makes sense. Question, if the track the railroad uses now was put in to replace the track there putting in now? Does that mean that there going to go to the mine by the original route and abandon the part of the line that was ment to bypass the town?
@NVNRy933 жыл бұрын
Tracks will end at Hwy 50 and the trains will continue to run up the canyon on the current route.
@caelumvaldovinos53183 жыл бұрын
The current plan as of Nov. 16th, 2021 is to lay the tracks as far as the edge of the White Pine County Museum property where it hits US 50. The plan is to have a revolving set of exhibits at the county museum where the railroad will bring up some cars and a locomotive or two for display and occasionally bring the #40 up and down the tracks to demonstrate the ping-pong commuter trains that ran between Ely and East Ely. They're also talking about using the old mine steam switcher to run cheap rides between the county museum and the rr museum once it gets restored.
@jacobramsey76243 жыл бұрын
@@caelumvaldovinos5318 cool! Are there plans to relay the rest of the road bed so the train goes to the mine along the original right of way? Also is it possible for the museum to work it's way towards Union Pacific tracks?
@caelumvaldovinos53183 жыл бұрын
@@jacobramsey7624Ramsey, there is no plan to rebuild the old Passenger line through Ely proper to the Keystone line due to the fact that the right of way has been paved and built over. Also, it'd be too redundant to rebuild that track when you have a far more scenic and exciting ride over the ore line that goes around the town. On the subject of the old Ely-Cobre mainline, that has been a 2-decade long dream for the railroad to reconnect Ely with the National Rail Network. There was some work done in 2010 with the Obama Stimulus Money, but that stopped due to the following issues: 1) The Contractor hired by the city to rebuild the line was a piece of doo-doo. 2) The City of Ely legally owns the mainline through McGill Junction to Cobre. 3) The Nevada Northern Rwy Museum legally owns all the track from McGill Junction to the East Ely yards and all the rolling stock and all the locomotives that would be used to move the freight. 4) Due to how the National Historic Site rules are written, the museum can't purchase anything or host anything that isn't or would have been original to the railroad or necessary to its operations that was not on property pre-2010 when the museum got its designation. So, legally, the City can't decide to buy an ex-Penn Central SD40-2 and run it in East Ely without incurring problems for the museum because the original NN never owned a Dash 2. 5) No one could come to an agreement, so the trackage is sitting as it is and what was rebuilt is used as an overgrown car storage area.

The ties are clearly sun baked. All the way to the ex WP at Shafter, Nv. The track is overgrown by tumbleweeds. Not sure what else to say.

its actually cheaper to build a wye than a turntable Oh did the track go further than McGill?
@royreynolds1083 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is unless there are property restrictions limiting the space to build a wye. A turntable will fit within a wye for turning a locomotive. As with the wye that is used at the end of the track now, the turnouts have spring-loaded points so the train crew does not need to throw any switches to use the wye. That can't be done with a turntable.

Dale:Watched this again. I realize that an economic decision was made to stop smelting operations. Environmental regulations require operations here have to remove sulfur oxides from the waste gases. Metal refining is not a non-toxic business. Most common form of most metals is the sulfate or sulfide. To separate the metal from the junk they have to use thiicyanide. Lots of thiocyanide to perspiration the metal. Key in the root cyanide. It is much easier to do this in some other country other the the US. We will not discuss separation of lithium for batteries. The other thing about mining copper is that it is typically associated with gold. Waiting for Sunday.
