This video just inspired me... I'm writing a play that focuses on hearing people accepting the deaf as who they are... It also motivates the deaf to follow their passion... Wish me luck 😍... I'll shoot it in February

Go, Leah! She had some wonderful quotes about equality. She will be a great asset for this organization. I think every campus could offer courses specifically in ASL. Not only could the Deaf/ HOH take them but students planning to specialize in ASL could take them as Immersion classes. I use the phrase "Differently Abled" in place of Disabled as I have "hidden disabilities."

learning ASL outside the deaf community by speaking to my friends im so surprised how noisy native language sounds (or looks, as the case may be!) to new learners! it makes me wonder if shes one of those people who gesture while speaking except she is combining that with ASL signs!

Galudet University has quite the rep as a wild and crazy party school here in the DC metro area. Lots of behavioral problems from the student body. I'm happy to watch something positive about it.

Yes there are 2 other universities for the deaf and one is in Rochester New york and the other is located west of both austin and san Antonio Texas

Hi There! As an interpreting student, things like this come up in my courses and the short answer is "cultural mediation." Since you understood the ASL used in the video, you clearly have some experience with ASL and the Deaf community, but many hearing people are completely unaware of the Deaf world or what the term "hearing" means in a Deaf context. In fact, you probably wouldn't even think of yourself as "hearing" unless you knew people who are deaf. Interpreting is a complex process balancing two languages and cultures, and I believe the interpreter was working to make the message as understandable as possible to someone with no experience with Deaf culture. Hope this helps!

maybe you belong to this expert-in-deaf-things world, but to the majority of Americans, like myself, the word 'hearing' is just a verb, aka, 'I am hearing weird noises' and is not an adjective. It doesn't make any sense to say something like 'hearing people' -- that is not normal English.

@ Opal Attitude is a New Zealand production. The Interpreter was most likely signing as she does in her Country. Not all Countries use straight American Sign Language. Most have adapted to fit their culture.
