SHY AnnCatherine Heigl, who has Down syndrome, shocked her family when she came home one day saying she wanted to become a cheerleader. Known as ‘AC’, she had already exceeded expectations playing tennis at her high school, but always said she hated being in front of crowds. Now 20, AC, from Indianapolis, USA, has made a huge leap in overcoming any nerves about big audiences. Her family believes she has become the first ever collegiate cheerleader with an intellectual disability.

Tbh I wouldn’t be so sure. This university is 5 minutes down the road from my house and the requirements to make the team are very high because it’s such a big school. I’m a cheerleader and I’ve been to many a GMU games, and all the cheerleaders there have at least level 4 tumbling and stunting ability. I’m not saying she doesn’t, but they showed only a prep (level 1) and extension (level 2) in this video with her in it. Typically at GMU you’d be seeing full ups (level 4, like the other flyer in the video) or even more difficult skills. Knowing GMU, it wouldn’t shock me to know that they just want to avoid a scandal. Even with my 7 years experience as a cheerleader I still am not good enough to make that team because I don’t have a standing back tuck.

Very nicely put and spot on. Could not believe the hateful spewing of "I don't fit in" in the comment section. Had to set her straight. I was erroneously diagnosed bipolar at nineteen drugged and the drugs disabled my brain and caused the diagnosis to appear accurate. My mother force fed me the pills insisting doctors never make mistakes. So lots of idiotic TRUE morons have treated me the same way they treat those they label "retards." People with Downs are actually more EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT than the average. Keep on spreading the love!

bamfbabybamf I’m not sure. This school is 5 mins from my house and the standards to make the team are very high. Everyone has at least level 4 tumbling and stunts and I’m not saying she doesn’t I’m just saying she was only doing level 1 and 2 stunts in this video. It doesn’t help that the sister said her mom basically threw a fit about her being on the team. Knowing GMU, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took her to avoid a “discrimination” scandal. I’m all about inclusion, but I don’t believe in lowering the standards for anyone for any reason.

@jillianm8958
@jillianm8958 5 жыл бұрын
Chloe I think she, like everyone, should be given the opportunity to try out for the team if they want to. But I don’t think that the standards should be lowered for people. If she meets the same standards as the others on the team good for her! But I don’t believe in special treatment. If one person gets it then all people should. Also, if she is not up to the same level as the other cheerleaders, it brings them down. They have to take 3 bases to put under her to do skills less than what they are capable of. As a cheerleader, I know that stunting with a person who is far below your skill level is extremely frustrating because the stunt group is limited to the skills of the lowest skilled person. That gets really boring when you can not push yourself or ever try more difficult stunts because of one person. I think it’s great for HER, but it’s not great for the TEAM. And since cheer is a team sport, what’s best for the team trumps what’s best for the individual. That’s why there’s a try out, to make sure all the people on the team will be with people of their own highest skill level which will ultimately advance the team in the sport. If there’s a team, they are only as strong as the weakest link and trying to work around limitations of a single team member is nightmarish for the coaches and the other athletes. It leaves everyone feeling exasperated, unchallenged and unsatisfied with the performance. Like I said, if she meets the standards then she absolutely deserves the spot. But if she doesn’t have the skills, giving her a spot means you are taking away a spot from a deserving person the skills - and that isn’t fair.

This about made me cry years of joy. My little sister does not have down syndrome, but she is mentally challenged. My little sister has always looked up to me so when she saw me cheering she took an interest. The coaches said the same thing to her: she can try out but she won't make the team. My sister practiced harder than anyone I know and she nailed her auditions and made the team. She cheered all through highschool and I couldn't be more proud of her. Congratulations!

Emily Priminova you literally have no life. You're replying and calling her ugly on everyone's comment that says she is beautiful. Stop trying to put others down because you feel bad about yourself. You would never be brave enough to go up to this girl and tell her to her face how ugly you think she is because you are a coward that uses the internet to hide behind a screen and bully people anonymously to make yourself feel better. She is very beautiful both inside and out. Everyone has their own definition of beauty and just because you don't find her pretty doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. Get a life and stop bullying random people on the internet. You act like a child and you need to grow up.

That's so not true, they chose her on the team because she's a good cheerleader.

Maren Madison “my mom had a nice little chat with the coach” “she then made the team like everybody else” yeah, as someone who has participated in sports since i was 4, her mom definitely pulled some strings to get her on the squad. she’s good, but not college level good imo

I appreciate the honesty, even as someone who has autism myself. People need to understand these types of things so they know that this type of discrimination can still occur

@@Chloe-jt4yb I do as someone with an intellectual disability. It shows that if the school didn't have their reputation at risk as far as inclusion goes, they would not consider her "good enough" for the cheer team and thus there was no real stigma "barrier" broken. The discrimination still exists in the back of their minds as well as in many other schools

What a sweet story. This girl is a champ...I’m sure the mother threatened litigation against the school and therefore her daughter was chosen for the squad. Go mama bear!

Okay so I've seen a couple of comments saying 'She isn't good enough, she wouldn't have been on the team if she hadn't down syndrome' and I just want to say: it's awesome for her to get that opportunity because, guess what, she will have a tough time after high school and after college. She might not get her dream job because of down syndrome. She might depend on someone forever. It's not unfair for her to get a spot on the team, whether or not she "stole" it from someone else, who is "normal". And I don't think someone else "lost" a spot because of her. Let her enjoy it! 💖
