'America’s out-of-control militarised police forces are a threat to democracy'

Through the ongoing protests at universities in the USA, the world’s been startled to see heavily-armed police confronting largely peaceful protests with military-grade equipment. Larger numbers of people, by far, are killed by police in the USA than in any other democracy, without reducing crime or aiding officer safety. The militarised police model has fractured society, and corroded the legitimacy of the criminal justice system.

Sorry to say this, america needs this. A university student, who is a friend of my relative was beaten black and blue, and he and 4 others sustained bruises and injuries when they were walking back to their apartment from the university in CA. Their mistake? Not having enough currency notes to handover to the wayward guys who attacked them.

i think the problem is nt militarization of police there, it is legality of weapon fr civilians. police also r humans nd wud fire in tense situation. they cnt hv only baton while civilians possess automatic rifle. nd when u hv weapons on both sides in these situations, it is bound to b used. this is also a lesson fr those who support corporate funding of politics which creates lobbies like weapon lobby there, which will nt let this weaponization of civilians stop. though this university raid seems too much.

America is the only country that I don't want to have a relationship with. I don't mind relationship with China, Russia, Brazil, Africa and South America or even UK, Germany, France and Japan along with rest of Europe. And it's not even an Anti American thing, May a thousand flowers bloom in America and India may we do well in our own "separate ways" . As far as US India Relationships go, that's pretty much a hard NO for me. And I have been saying these things since the Iraq war. India might not get along with China but We are not fan of US either. If the relentless bullying and pressure from US continues, then We must just help China and/or align with China which might just replace US as a global hegemon. The same way US helped China against the Soviet union. We might not be number 1 but when 0 aligns with any number the value of that number increases ten folds.

Should police forces be trained & equipped to fight violent mobs/ armed criminals ? Yes. Definitely...if the law and order situation so demands. Will arming & training police forces with such equipment & capabilities result in these mobs/ criminals arming themselves with more lethal arms & tactics? Yes. Criminal gangs and their tactics(&equipment) will improve, subject to their risk-benefit analysis. So, should we stop training & equipping the police to handle such situations, and expect the crime rate to fall? No-brainer. Comparing nations & extrapolating data without factoring the social & legal backdrops can lead to lopsided deductions. The underlying point of restraining police forces from using excessive force is, needless to say, very relevant.
