Many many years ago (more than 50) sometimes during the summer when the traffic was backed up in one direction - they would stop traffic in one direction and reverse the flow on those lanes. At that time there were bridge sections that were two-lane, two way. When they would get the traffic stopped in the one direction, a police officer would drive down the closed lane standing on the saddle of his Harley (doing about 50 mph) and wave you into the lane behind him to show that it was ok to use both lanes in the one direction. I can still recall that cop standing in that saddle. That, to me was one of the most impressive things that I’d seen.

Bridges don't bother me but the westbound Bay Bridge does. You have to actually drive it to experience it. A few years back there were construction upgrades made to this bridge and they never installed the cement jersey walls. The effect is you can drive right off the edge. In some spots near the trestles the jersey walls are still there and the bridge then momentarily feels more secure. Now its creepy but before it was just another bridge.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is a little over 17 miles long over open water with tunnels & a restaurant/diner about halfway across the bridge. The tunnel systems allow for ship traffic, including military (from Norfok Naval Shipyard), to flow in each direction so there aren't continuous bridge lifts. This bridge system used to be one lane in each direction from one end of the bridge to the other. However, Annapolis is still a few hours away. Once you get to the other side of the bridge, you're still in Virginia. You still have a little ways to go before you leave Virginia & cross the state line into Delaware. Once you get through Delawsre, then you'll be close to Annapolis.

I don't see where the scary part is. Lady, you should have tried the old Huey P. Long bridge in New Orleans, it's the longest railroad bridge in america, that was once a very scary bridge to cross before it was rebuilt.....
@1markfox6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching our video but that's no Lady, that's my Wife. I've been over the Chesapeake Bridge many times and I don't think it's scary. I also crossed the Huey Long several times in the '90's and it wasn't scary either. This is what Wikipedia says about the Chesapeake Bridge: Because of its height, the narrowness of the spans (there are no hard shoulders), the low guardrails, and the frequency of high winds, it is known as one of the scariest bridges in the world, especially in higher tractor-trailer trucks.

Drove that bridge a lot going to/from the Eastern Shore to Balto. Two worst times was in a truck and on a motorcycle. Truck had to stay in the far right lane. Sitting up high in a truck, you don't see a guard rail or anything except a real long drop into the drink. Talk about fear of heights. The other time I was on my motorcycle and the wind at the high point on the bridge was crazy. It literally pushed me two lanes over. I thought I was going over the side since there wasn't a whole lot there to keep me top side.
@hoosierfan276 жыл бұрын
And why exactly is this "the scariest"? I've used it many. I live within 90min of the bay. I think the narrator telling the driver "...oh we're speeding...its speed limit 50".... was the most scandalous part.

For y’all not understanding why it’s “scary” the whole bridge sways when it’s windy and there’s no shoulder. There’s also been trucks that have fallen off the side before. I live on kent island and there’s constantly also construction going on on it. Also the lanes are narrow. It’s hard for large trucks like 18 wheelers to stay in between the lines.
