While US Politics is dominated by the Democrats and Republicans, they aren't the only two political parties you might see on the ballot. And while parties like the Libertarians and Greens get some press, they're unlikely to gain any power at the federal level. So why on Earth do parties smaller than they are even bother? In this video, we look at America's fringe parties, the ones who have no real shot at winning but for some reason still take part.
Ft: The American Solidarity Party, The American Independent Party, The Peace & Freedom Party, The Party for Socialism & Liberation, and The Alliance Party

but they have just zero chance to barely win anything. America is like a flawed democracy right now where 2 mainstream parties fighting each other and whenever there's a third party they would be like: "Hey, piss off". Not to mention their extreme usage of gerrymandering congressional districts and all presidential races are decided by swing states. Rather they campaign nationally, they just campaign in these swing states more frequently. The Electoral College is old and unfair, their whole political system has to change

One lesson from Tuesday's election I'm Virginia was "All Politics Are Local". If any third party is going to make inroads in the US, they will have to think about concentrating on local elections: school boards, town councils, county seats, etc.

I agree. Start with focusing on a handful of states (the left-wing ones if you're a leftist party or the right-wing ones if you're a right party), and eventually work your way up to hopefully getting a handful of seats in the House of Representatives. Once you do that you're party will instantly become 100x more relevant on the national stage becuase you'd hold major political power. Especially when the margin in the House is tight.

First past the post essentially ensures you can't have more than two major parties. So you could say the same of any American third party. Thankfully some states have already implemented RCV and there is broad national support for exactly this reform.
@ianbelanger7459
@ianbelanger7459 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlorazzeto For the US, the more important issue than RCV is the structure of the government in general. The central assumption of the framers was that a Senator from West Virginia would vote for West Virginia and not surrender their power to another state like Texas. Since 1980 there has been an increasing nationalization of the parties, which has transformed them into parliamentary parties. There are simply no good systems for dealing with the resulting deadlock. The trick is to break party nationalization, which will most likely come from stopping the national parties from controlling the means to run for office. This will most likely happen when one party makes all sides of the dark money arms race disarm. While there are other methods, removing the money would be more likely than restructuring congress.

Won't happen though without a constitutional amendment. The reason is the US has a very, very primitive, even childish view of democracy. if one candidate wins 50.01% of the votes and the other candidate wins 49.99% of votes, the first candidate wins totally. it's "winner takes all." Under a more advanced democracy this situation would lead to some sort of power sharing so that a practical half of the voters are not left in the swamp.

@davidroddini1512
@davidroddini1512 2 жыл бұрын
@@SPENCEx1x3 While I agree that Maine and Nebraska have a “better” system for elections, the problem goes much deeper. Most Americans don’t even know that any 3rd parties exist. Of those that do many don’t even realize there are any 3rd parties smaller than the Green Party. Even if they do know about 3rd parties, the system is rigged against them so that a third party vote is “wasted” at best and helps the “worse” of the two evils at worst. What we need is to have a national discussion on what should be considered a valid 3rd party and then guarantee that any group that meets those criteria will be on the ballot and in all the debates like the major parties. Once 3rd parties no longer have the “wasted/spoiler vote” stigma, maybe we can break in to governance and free Americans from the duopoly that is the American political system. Alternatively if could force the break up of the Democratic and Republican into at least 3-4 smaller parties each, it might be easier for “3rd” parties to complete against the 6-8 “major parties”. True, government by coalitions has its own problems. But I think that it is preferable to the total deadlock and radicalization that the American duopoly fosters.

@Renan_PS their line is more nuanced than that. It's an old marxist-leninist party, and they try to be as cohesive as possible. All their members have agreed to not criticise the party in public. Instead they opt for internal debates only as a route of critisism. I think this is what he's refferring to when he talks about free speech, its PSL's line on unity through rhetorical discipline. But trust me all these small left parties have stupid weird rules like that. If youve ever encountered the PSL in person though, you'll know how good they are at on the ground organizing: tenants rights, unionizing, community cleanups, food distribution, and much much more. It's much more than I can say about most of the other "far left parties" who do alot of talking and not alot of organzining. That's what most people think of when they encounter the PSL, the fact that their members can't criticise them in public and i guess therefore you could say theyre anti-free speech is pretty irrelevent to most of the work they actually do. Plus no one is stopping a member from leaving the party and critisicing them in public. It's just bit of an odd point that doesn't really capture the politiccal significance of the PSL

I am very much a supporter of the ASP. I think one thing that is interesting on the fringe are the differences in social philosophies. These are views that exist in dialog with the mainstream ideology of the US as critique with, one can only hope, the power to change the way Americans think about governance in order to move forward. One thing that could be interesting in the future would be to interview with executives or leaders in various minor parties to see how they would understand the differences in social and political philosophy to the mainstream. As I often say, every country has a social philosophy of which every party participates willingly or not. In Germany it is Christian Democracy. In Sweden it is Social Democracy. And in the US it is Liberalism. And one only really even steps into the threshold in the fringe.

Those tickets were the Alliance Party ticket (also consisting of the American Independent Party), that received the most votes within this category (not the least), and the PSL ticket (which as you did state, included the Peace and Freedom Party, though again, I'm wondering how or why you split up their vote shares). That's just a Christian party, just look at their previous name & the homophobic disregard for same-sex marriage. No matter what, State & Religion should never mate, ever! America grew because the state separated from the church.

@@yugen3968 American Solidarity Party is actually a very diverse party including both religious people from Christians to even pagans, and non-religious people. There are also talks underway to revise our platform to be LGBT+ friendly while holding onto family values. There are very few in the American Solidarity Party who are “anti-LGBT” but unfortunately they are a very vocal minority. Christian Democracy is not just for Christians. As someone already pointed out, Christian Democratic Parties have been very successful in not just Germany but many other European and Latin American countries as well and they are very much secular. If anything, ASP is very much for separation of church and state and does not want to impose anything on those who disagree. We in fact are okay with those who disagree and are willing to work with them to where we come to a meaningful compromise.

Important factual correction: the Socialist Workers Party did not emerge from the Communist Party in 1937. The SWP is the lineal continuation of a group expelled from the CP in 1928 who formed their own organization, then joined the Socialist Party in 1936 and were then expelled in 1937, after which they formed the Socialist Workers Party over New Years 1937-38.

The problem with "neither left nor right, but forward" is that all the things you could suggest for what "forward" actually means policy-wise are left lmao. At the same time, "neither left nor right" is a red flag phrase that usually means someone's policies are right-wing but they're afraid to admit it openly, so that's something to watch out for in general.

The ASP would be a major party if it wasn't for the political duopoly keeping all 3rd parties down. It'd give a lot of the working class an option that isn't either an attack on your material well being (GOP) or an attack on your morals (Dems). This includes many minorities, given that it's white liberals and their indoctrinated token minorities that drive the conversation in the Dem party, Latinos, Blacks, Asians, etc, a LOT of us don't support the overnight nonstop changing morals that are imposed from above by the rich. Seriously, every 5 years the liberals of yesterday become the conservatives of today yet we're gaslighted that the slippery slope isn't real, and that you somehow are called a race traitor if you don't agree with the few token minorities white liberals like to parade around and the woke dogma that changes every 5 seconds. Modern liberals have lost their minds and are nothing like those of 10-15 years ago, and the conservatives are in bed with nativists and libertarians (I don't say corporations because the liberals support those too). The ASP represents the views of most normal people who still have a sense of right and wrong that is grounded rather than everchanging as well as they support the people over the rich elites that control both parties and keep us all sick, poor, and suffering.

That peace party sounded great. In general i'd loved to see a lot of these smaller parties get representatives at the high level even if it's only one or two members. Maybe the house of representatives should be allocated not to states like senators but to the entire country by population. And proportional everything. All though that would be a massive voting list so I don't think you could do the voting the same way like you do for president where only one gets in.
@kevincronk7981
@kevincronk7981 2 жыл бұрын
I think the house being a single proportional vote would be great, although personally I'd rather see more independents in congress than members of 3rd parties. With the voting system how it is now, if a 3rd party becomes successful it'll over time just kick out one of the current 2 big parties and eventually end up with nothing really different.
@tylerhawley2106
@tylerhawley2106 2 жыл бұрын
The issue with changing the House to that is that the representatives would no longer be representing a given state, state representation being a key aspect to all federal elections. And personally, one thing I have against a generalized proportional vote, even on a state level, is that you lose the local connection that representatives have with their districts.
