America VS Europe VS Asia - Building a road layout for the city center in Cities: Skylines [Sunset Harbor DLC]
In this Cities:Skylines [Sunset Harbor DLC] video you can see me building a road layout in three different ways. The first one is in an American Style Build like you would find it in the United States.
The second one is inspired by Europe, for example, Germany or France.
The third and last one is a build from Asia. You can find builds like that in japan or China.
For this video I used barely any mods...

Asia works for highly dense city. Look at China Japan Korea for example. Plus, the people also not egoistic like the west. They use public transportation mostly. Or motorcycle.. That's why.. the road is not that needed. They need lot of streets. To walk or using bicycle or motorcycle. and btw, it's kinda racist to think that Asia is one unity. No they're not. We need to split Asia into 4 or maybe 5 parts. East Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia aka Arabia or Middle East, India, and the Steppe region of Asia. These regions obviously have their own road layout. It's all about geographic topography thingy and also the crowds. in this video, it's the layout of East & Southeast Asia. But for East Asia, it's their suburban region that like this maybe.

Living in an American city, I can tell you you were 100% accurate, especially with your two statements. In Houston, all the roads go north-south or east-west, except for downtown, which is at a 45-degree angle. The other statement, about giant interchanges, is also 100% accurate, we have three different highways, each on a different side of downtown that meet at its corners, and another highway that ends at one of those junctions.
@imperatur

Can you tell me why the downtown streets are on a different angle?
@Bananaman412
@Bananaman412 3 жыл бұрын
@@imperatur Honestly I have no idea why, I thought it might be because of a river, but after looking at Google Maps, that's not the case. The reason I came up with is that the roads are facing the same way as the road from the coastal city of Galveston, which used to be a much bigger city before 1900. Edit: Kind of like In2ition (below) said, the downtown was based on something else (an existing road) and the newer parts are N-S and E-W.

@@imperatur In the case of Minneapolis, MN, it's likely because the original grid followed the river's edge...much like your American example. Then, the rest of the city (and suburb area) swaps to the N/S/E/W grid that is common in much of the U.S.

@@imperatur The reason is because of the former Spanish Empire and the law of the indies. The law call for the grid layout to be parallel to wind currents so bad odor and stench could be carry away from the city center, the US grid plan follows cardinal directions no matter what, North-South and East-West, so when they acquired those cities they decided to follow their own grid system and not the one already in place thus downtown with grid at a different angle. This applies to cities in former Spanish Empire own territory (From the West coast to the Mississippi river and Florida).

I think the thing missing with America roads is how they've changed over time. That grid-like roadway network - that went out of fashion in the mid 1900s in favor of curvier roadways. That's why newer cities are routinely designed on curvy grids, if they are gridded at all.
@li_tsz_fung
@li_tsz_fung 3 жыл бұрын
Grids are just for rapid expansion. No need to plan much, but it's already very scalable. And can be changed to fused grid for better road hierarchy. But city planners said curve streets are actually safer. Drivers are more likely to drive above speed limit at a long straight road. Personality, I think curve roads look better. But if you are not familiar with that area, you might find it harder to navigate

They are usually not in downtown, but really close by. Because beack in the day when the railroads were built, railroad companies usually built their station right outside of the existing cities, the part wich later became downtown. And then the cities started to grow excessively, as industries moved in closely to the railway stations, and new housing areas were put up arround. But the railway usually not crossed old fortifications into town, because even back then, land was expensive inside the towns, so they built their stations outside on the fields.

In European cities (I’m from the uk) the large expanse of green is extremely accurate. It originated in the 1800s when a lot of Victorian households who were wealthy wanted park views. Nowadays it’s called a green belt . They have one in London to prevent the city sprawling out too much. Especially in the Victorian times when rich families who had business in the city centre wanted to be far away from the smog. Amazing video

My point being, I want to see those BIG NUMBERS like a bus hub with over 3.000 passengers served last week or those metro stations with over 1.000 passengers served last weeks and I am not talking about the one lucky station, but like the whole public transport system. I got big cities but with low total numbers in the overview, even though the whole city is one big network... What do you think? In Europe (particually the UK, although most of places I have been to on the continent do follow the same rules), our cities are built over hundreds if not thousands of years. They start of as hammlets and market towns where merchants would come to trade, this means the would often have fairly straight routes in from several directions and the centre would be almost circular (taverns, inns and a few shops built around the market 'squares', and then a few layers of houses in rings around them). As time goes on there would be more houses built around them. Often these would be on narrow streets with passages and ginnels between buildings as there were no cars. Then a few factories would be built at the edge of centre with rows of houses for the workers (this would be kind of in a grid pattern only the majority of the roads would be parrelle with just 1 or 2 perpendicular, until they got to a hill or someone else's land). A lot of the poor quality houses and original buildings have been replaced with high-rise office blocks now and the roads widerened (slightly). There are also many squares and little parks in our city centres because the land can't be built on, and people like open spaces. In terms of why rounabouts were built, we just love them. They're a perfect way for safely and efficently keeping traffic flowing. As a general rule of thumb we build rounabouts in these situations: - If 2 equally busy main roads cross - If 5 or more roads come together - If there is motorway junction - If there is a minor road joining a dual-carrigageway (where the traffic joining would never get a gap otherwise) - If traffic approaches the junction too quickly - If the majority of the taffic is turning at a blind corner Most of our rounabouts are either 2 lane proprer ones (either with or without lights), or single lane mini-roundabouts. They're not everywhere, there are some journeys where you won't come aross one, but there are others where you will come across several with a couple of minutes (There is 4 between my house and the gym). Okay, that's a long comment, sorry for making you read all that.

What? I checked it on google map and it looked like very typical asian layout to me. Historical long roads became main roads, then build grids between them

Metro Manila consists of 16 cities (and one municipality), so all of them got their own road layout, and the whole metropolitan region just connected the edges of those roads together. Looking at the city of Manila, it’s a mix of all of them, European road layout are on the old districts. American road layout are on its suburbs. And the Asian road layout for the newer districts.

Manila or Old Manila (Spanish Intramuros) Follows an Spanish grid because of the Laws of the Indies. This makes the grid feel more western rather than Eastern.

Great video, I wish that I could build like you ( whenever I try to like build a city but I do all the roads first it ends up looking like all of these mixed ) but not all european cities are like that, example: eastern europe where alot of cities were rebuilt which resulted in alot of city blocks similar to the american ones but with less highways.

What European cities you took the most inspiration from? Cause I feel like Europe is such a diverse continent we can't really say it's just a one grid. Look at Madrid, London, Berlin or Warsaw and they're layouts are very different. Don't get me wrong you still did a very good job and every city have some things in common with the one you made but I just wanted to point it out and hear what inspired you. I love your videos and this format of America vs Europe vs Asia is really amusing and inspiring. 😍👍

Also European cities often have a grid of one way roads, each going one way, then the opposite and so on, to compensate for the narrow roads.

Cool video but: I dont think thats how European cities work. 1st is that most arent created from single long road, but either a castle, or a circular road which contains/contained town hall and 1st buildings (Old Town) and then the roads are build outwards. Also the roads in the video turn left-right too much, they dont do this as much in real life. (they DO do it, but not as much) There are some exception, for example i live in a city with was created from 2 circular plaza's/squares/whatever-its-in-english connected by single long road. and then there are other roads coming outwards. from that, making the whole city look a bit rectagular, but thats rare. Also its not true that there are a lot of no-car areas. you can get everywhere by car, but that's true the cities are pedestrian-friendly PS i liked the video, so no hate to anyone :)

I've never seen an interchange like that in America and here in LA we literally invented the stacked interchange in 1949... While it may exist somewhere it's not in any major metropolitan area I've been in and uncommon, we use the cloverleaf. If you take the time to learn the history of road layouts, while all contemporary ones come from America, they are time/trend specific rather than region specific. an older city in the UK will be grid layout (just like NY) while cities in the 60-70 will have a lot of cul-de-sacs and so on and so forth. grid patterns are the most driving efficient by miles while making only T's and meandering dead ends makes getting around on foot/car extremely difficult. it can make something 1 block away in a grid over a mile away by car. lots of interesting history on streets starting with Ancient Rome. I suspect the author has only lived in one of these places, thus, his narrow view
