This week we look at the best ways to install the American Autowire harness in a classic Mustang. From wire wrapping tips to removing the wiper arm bracket to ease the installation of the harness to routing the wires into the engine bay Jeff and Vinnie take on the task of making the '65 Mustang's harness better than new.

American Auto Wire also offers an adhesive free friction tape similar to the cars stock wire wrap that is what i used on my car. I was clueless when i started my project (spent some time on the phone with jeff matching stock to the new harness) but i really love this product they offer so many options and updates.

I put my fuse box on the left side of the steering column, on a bracket I made, the fuses are right under the dash, facing down to the floor, easy to reach and see... also the entire harness simply goes up from there, very easy.

Hi Jeff, I am at that point with my 67 mustang where i need to decide on a wiring harness. For restomod stuff my research has point to AAW or Painless wiring. I see that they make universal kits or kits for the Mustang. As a weekend warrior restorer i am torn and not quite sure what to do. What would you recommend and why? Perhaps there is a new harness out there besides these that you would recommend? Thx!

Well Jeff I'm really proud of your choice of which finger you used to push your glasses back up when Vinnie was mocking you. It would have been so easy to use "another" finger! Of course using that other finger could have killed two birds with one stone, pushing your glasses up AND providing a non-verbal response! LOL

Hi Jeff, I have a question about position of a New Fuse Box and Relays. I watched your videos on the Wiring Harness replacement and noticed that the New Box and Relays are mounted under the dash. Is that the best place for them or would it be better in the Engine compartment closer to the battery. By placing it closer to battery, that would give you a shorter power wire needed and less heat generated through that wire. Is that correct? or does that really matter as long as you run the correct gauge wire for the distance and the amount of total Amps through the New Fuse Box. Also, GREAT videos, love them. Thanks Gil

Water and engine heat would have a detrimental effect on the fuse panel unless you can enclose it. Also the harnesses that most companies are selling are set up for interior placement. As long as you run the correct gauge wire you should be fine.

Hey Jeff, with the Vintage AC system in your Fairlane wagon, where did the fuse box location wind up? I plan on doing both to my Falcon wagon.

I have the same - 510125 updated 8/24/2021, and the sticker places the fuse box where the old one is/was/whatever. Can I place this up on the firewall like it shows in the video?

Hi, at 17:32 you mention a "something" that you will get that will allow the factory steering column harness to plug directly into the AAW harness. Could you elaborate please? We wrapped the AAW harness for our 66 Mustang yesterday, started installing and will finish this weekend. Your videos are informative and help a ton. Thanks to you, and the people that sponsor you.

Cory, we've had great dealings with these guys and are happy to endorse the product line. Hindsight being what it is we feel that a couple of rolls of the tape they offer might have been a better choice for limbering the wire in the interior. The sticky stuff doesn't allow for as much movement of the wire bundle. Thanks for the insight and we appreciate your watching the show!

Hi, Do you have experience working with Painless wiring harnesses? Do you have a preference between Painless Wiring Harnesses or American Auto wire harnesses?
@SixtyFiveDropTop
@SixtyFiveDropTop 11 жыл бұрын
Are you installing a rubber/plastic grommet where the wires pass through the firewall? My experience is that, over time, and with constant vibration from driving, the wiring insullation can wear away if exposed to the metal edge of the pass-through hole. That avoids a possible short. You may have that task in the next video, and I am just jumping the gun/grommet. But it is an easy task and even Vinnie could do it.

I have a problem wiring in my blinker harness into the American autowiring harness, instructions say I have 9 wires but the one that's not included is the white/red wire(hazard wire) from my blinker harness, there are only 8 wires and not know what to do about that ninth wire

why does AAW route the wires different than factory as far as the different fuse box location?, my application is where i have a clutch pedal with a quadrant on top in that area your routing the wires. i went with the clutch cable with a quadrant clutch pedal for a t-5 speed conversion, with the factory wires i dont have this problem, you show routing wires over the top rear of the pedal bracket coming from the relocated fuse the factory wiring doesnt do that?. now im wondering if the Painless wire harness is better?, Painless mounts their fuse box in factory location... eliminating my problem of the clutch quadrant since they route the wires from fuse box same as factory where AAW does not? i know painless a lot more expensive than the AAW harness (65-66 application) then there is one more company who makes these named Ron Francis, there advantage is the modular fuse box to add many options and modern accessories but their product may be more technically challenging, i wouldnt know.

+soupercooper Well, we haven't actually done a full review of all the harnesses, But we'd say that if you see an issue with a harness that will not work with your application, We'd recommend looking elsewhere for a better solution. That is the cool thing about the hobby today. You are not bound by one company!
@AutoRestoMod

Yep, but we don't want to install the grommets until we are sure there are no more wires to pass through the firewall. We'll go into more detail on that next week. Wow, Vinnie is sad now....

I would not use Electrical Tape to wrap a harness. I would recommend using Tesa Tape. This is a Fiber tape that is very similar to what is used at the factory. It lasts much longer than standard electrical tape. An even better solution is a polyester net wire loom. This will keep all the wires together and allow enough flexibility where the wire can easily be pulled and positioned. This is another product that most automobile factories use to manage their wire under the dash on large wire bundles.

@autorestomod maniacs. I have a 65 FastBack I did the AAW like you. Since 65 didn’t come with a hazard switch. Does the KIT have one on the harness. That I can buy a hazard switch and use it. Cause I know the 55-66 kit is same same complete kit. Thanks. If not I will call Tech at AAW. Guido ! Great show been watching for a long time
