O-M-G "The Slauson" -- a dance I had forgotten about until this R-A-R, Aaron. It was most often danced as a line dance: standing, then leaning slightly forward and back in time to the music with a little one-footed kick to the beat of the song. Sock hop memories! As always, you've included a terrific historical discography (and an on the money geography lesson, too). Thank you YouCanDanceToIt!
@YCDTI6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Don! I couldn’t really find a good example of the Slauson so your description is really helpful. I think Round Robin might be doing it in the “Kick That Little Foot Sally” clip on NRRA archives and in his interview he mentions something about it starting with the gliding motion of rollers skating (?) And for the geography, it really helps having an expert who was there help me keep it all straight ;)
@dancerdon91756 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's The Slauson, except Round Robin's "Kick That Little Foot Sally" is in double-time. The Meadowlarks' and The Olympics' tunes are more in tempo to what the kids actually danced to.
@oldiesgeek4546 жыл бұрын
Was the dance named after the L.A. freeway Slauson cut off? Carson used to use the name in his Tea Time Movie skits.
@RAYFORDHENDERSON-dc2op5 ай бұрын
They never did the slauson down south, but did do the slop, which never made it to AB because the version DC knew wasnt very attractive...also the PC or Panama City a semi fast bop with entirely different steps. What was on the Jukebox in Panama City, Fla was what Southerners were dancing to in the 60s.

FYI, it was still about a month away from the Beatles and the rest of the British invasion. Americans were still listening to what Don McLean referred to as "dirges in the dark", with There I've Said It Again by Bobby Vinton #1 on the Billboard charts--and before that Dominique by The Singing Nun. From February on, American popular music would never be the same.
@TheLeonhamm2 жыл бұрын
So there were no 'dirges' in the dark after February '64? Bobby Vinton didn't have another number-one hit at the end of '64? Louis Armstrong and Dean Martin were nowhere to be seen, and in '65 Petula Clark, Hermans Hermits, Bob Dylan, Barry Maguire, and Herb Alpert didn't make it big, nor were Sounds of Silence, Ballad of the Green Beret, Nowhere Man, Paint It Black, They're Coming To Take Me Away, Born Free, Strangers In The Night, See You In September etc played on the popular radio stations in '66? I believe Don McClean also pontificated that 'cover versions' of popular tunes were acts of 'racism' .. like Ray Charles 'I Can't Stop Loving You', Mills Brothers 'Glow Worm', Platters 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'- but not The Beatles doing 'Twist And Shout' etc .. BTW In the 1950s Black artists frequently did genuine cover versions of then-current 'pop' tunes, it was the 'tune' that hit - recorded across a variety of audiences, just look at the Billboard Charts to see how it worked. ;o)

Looks like the kids struggled to dance to the 2nd song. Lol It's good to see an African American in the spotlight. I know someone who said that he danced on the show a few times in Philly, but was always positioned way in the back.

Boy, I had no idea that A Canadian visited Bandstand in the 1960's. It was a major hit with a French Canadian Fellow named Pierre Lalonde who convinced French Quebec hosted a Similar Show where a Singing Group Called The Baronets performed on. One of the Members would go on and take a 14 Year Old Girl and make her a Superstar. Her name was Celine Dion and his name was Rene Angelil.

laminage kind of cool seeing a Canadian dud a the A.B.S. and right on for René & Celine . i d watch as many times these two programs as i could , in french was Jeunesse d'aujourd'hui with hosts Pierre Lalonde and cohost Joel Denis and of cours. A.B.S with Dick Clark

Good for you! Later on as you know a lot of Canadians appeared on Bandstand. The Guess Who, Bryan Adams, Loverboy & Corey Hart. Also here's another fun fact. Round Robin went on Tour as part of Dick Clark & His Caravan Of Stars Tour where the Bill consisted of all kinds of folks. The Crystals, Shirelles, Paul Anka, and Drifters and "Dummies" who sang their song over and over again. The "Dummies" were at the bottom of the bill in June 1964 and by August they had The Number One Song in The Country. It was The Supremes.

My friends Dean and Jean were on that same bill. Their big hits were "Tra La La La Suzy" and "Hey Jean Hey Dean".

Hi AARON R...Thanks for this clip and as always the enhancement of sound...I've heard both sides of controversy about Dick Clark featuring or not featuring African-American couples on Philadelphia American Bandstand shows. Here in early '64 it is clear that everyone was welcome. On another note, I notice that the kids dancing by the Top 10 board, are doing what appears to be "The Slauson" although Dick indicates that no one was doing that dance quite yet at this time. Thanks again, Aaron!

It reminds me of a scene in the original Hairspray and Chris Thompson’s character Corny Collins said “The Corny Collins show is now integrated!” That scene will stick out in my mind. But people like Famous Hicks brought all the people of color on the 60’s and AB was fully integrated by then.

Philly holds so much History. It was next to Chicago, & New York the epicenter of Music in the 1950's. Deals were done, Money was made and Stars were born. Also it has the Best Blue Eyed Soul Singers from Hall & Oates, Len Barry, Karen Young & Vickie Sue Robinson. I had no idea it was also a pioneering LGBT State as well. I was stunned when I found out some of the "early" regulars like Arlene Sullivan were Gay. In The UK, alot of folks do interpretations of Philly Based Songs from Soap Operas, Pop Stars and Boy Bands.

Ha! Ha! Here's another fun fact. In The Old School Degrassi Book about Stephanie Kaye, she could believe that when the School opened in 1957 her Mother who was a Student there remembered they had to wear Uniforms and The Boys used separate entrances. The same thing with Olivia Newton John who attended University High and also had to wear a Uniform with Hats and Gloves.

Was it taped in Glendale in the 60s 70s and 80s?
@senorxrey64293 жыл бұрын
No, AB moved from Phila. to the ABC-TV Studios lot at 4151 Prospect in Los Feliz/East Hollywood. That was THE big ABC-TV West Coast facility where nearly everything, including most soaps and game shows were taped that didn't originate in NYC. 'General Hospital' moved to Prospect in the '80s after they'd been located at The Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. Disney has several buildings in Burbank and Glendale. KABC-TV 7 moved from Prospect to Glendale around 1996. Other productions originate from the ABC Studios on the main Disney studio lot in Burbank, including shows that air on other networks.
