The greatest... unless you were Black (who did not know your place), Latino/Hispanic, gay, a woman with an unwanted pregnancy, mentally ill, a drug addiction (no one chooses addiction), a war protestor... anyone really, who did not fit the image of "Good American." I lived those years. Great music, great cars, great fashion (unless you were fat, of course), but a great world? No. It's better now, but we still have a lot to achieve to make us a great nation. I can still love the music of the 60s, though...

I used to blast this song from our "record player" back in 1967 and my mom would eventually come in and say "would you PLEASE turn that down"??? I would turn it down for a few seconds and turn it right back up again. Now I've got hearing problems but who cares!!!!!

I love how the kids get up from the bleachers when the intro bass line starts up, then when the organs pipes in they're dancing. These kids were into it. And why not? Stevie Winwood was a kid himself when this song was released, just 18 years old then.

So many folks covered this Song. Olivia Newton-John on her Totally Hot Album 1979, then The Blues Brothers, and it was featured in The Big Chill. Steve Winwood was in his own way the first Blue Eyed Soul Singer in England before George Michael, Ed Sheeran and even Sam Smith. Also "I'm A Man" was featured on Mad Men when Don went to LA To see Megan.

What's so great about this is that this is a self-selected audience. The studio may have been able to "pick and choose" who could be there, but it was from a pool of people who already wanted to be there. They are already motivated to show off their dance moves and glad to hear the music presented over a good sound system. I bet, for some, it would be a story they still tell today.

Great tune there. A cross-over time for music production. Top 40 hit-parade was showing limitations in 'face of the hippy movement. Longer playing album format' such as "Underground FM' were dawning. KMPX SF...Tom Donahue. 107.1 on the FM dial. The first one of it's kind? Listened during those times of Monterey Jazz Festival. KSAN domination in Bay Area came a bit later. Thanksfor memories.
