Welcome Back!....“So Glad We Made It!”
To see a ticket stub for today’s episode of “New American Bandstand ‘67” taped on Jan. 28, 1967 at ABC TV Center, Hollywood, check out my channel’s “Community” tab. Also posted is an invitation letter for a Nov.’67 taping at Hollywood Palace. Remember, to attend you must be between 14 and 18 years old. Boys must wear a jacket or a sweater with a tie and girls must wear dresses….no pedal pushers, slacks or shorts. Also, no smoking and cameras and the taking of pictures are not permitted! 😊 (letters and tickets are courtesy of Don Sanuskar)
Dancers who were lucky enough to get their ticket and invitation letter for today are: Marcia Silverman in the stands (0:07), Frankie Riggilio (0:24), Danny Lawyer (0:32), A jacketless Mick Tisherman & Robin Morris (0:40), Stan Soburn (0:49), Rick Moreno (0:51), Bernie Kates & Karen Sudlow (1:03), Leslye Vodden (1:08), Martha Favela (1:10), John Pollard (1:20), Famous Hooks (1:26), Frank Vanderpuil (1:42), Dan Snell (1:48), Sandi Apsheen (2:04), a jacketless Jeff Stein (2:22), Deedra Higgins (2:37), Diana Bower (2:46) and Don Sanuskar & Roni Menacker on the riser (1:36)
The U.S. mix of “Gimme Some Lovin’” just entered the charts at #39 last week (Jan. 28) and is at #26 today. It will peak at #7 by the end of February. While 18 year-old lead singer Steve Winwood is the star of the group, they named themselves ”The Spencer Davis Group” because Spencer was the only one that liked doing interviews.
Tomorrow night (Feb. 5) following “The Ed Sullivan Show”, CBS will premiere “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” starring comedians Tom and Dick Smothers (“Mom always liked you best”) Despite going up against the highly rated “Bonanza” on NBC, the show would become popular among the younger generation thanks to their unusual, subversive comedy style.

Coming Up This Year (KZbin gods willing):
The Bandstand dancers dance to new songs by (in no particular order right now): Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Monkees, The Grass Roots, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Everly Brothers, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Petula Clark, The Animals, Peter & Gordon, The Rascals, Simon & Garfunkel, Spanky & Our Gang, Johnny Rivers, Lesley Gore, Tommy Roe, The Who, The Impressions, Arthur Conley, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Mamas and the Papas, Donovan, Chicago, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Five Americans, The Platters, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Ronettes, Sonny & Cher, Little Anthony and the Imperials, The Byrds, Peter, Paul & Mary, Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, Tom Jones, The Beach Boys, Brenton Wood, Janis Joplin, The Association, The Buckinghams, Herman’s Hermits, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The 5th Dimension and many more! All of that plus the Rate-A-Record, Spotlight Dance, Hotline, and Question of the Day Segments, maybe a few live/lip sync performances, we’ll check in with Shebang, Disc-O-Teen and a few other 60’s teen dance shows…..and some surprises along the way. You won‘t want to miss it. Don’t touch that dial!
Now...if you want to help to keep your breath and your teeth clean and fresh, and who doesn’t?, watch this message from Dentyne… 😉

Deep inside of me there's still a teenager even though I'm 71years old and nobody can take that away from me, we had great music, great girls, so beautiful that I even married one, and still married to my highschool sweetheart and she's still beautiful in and out. Thank you Lord !♡

The greatest... unless you were Black (who did not know your place), Latino/Hispanic, gay, a woman with an unwanted pregnancy, mentally ill, a drug addiction (no one chooses addiction), a war protestor... anyone really, who did not fit the image of "Good American." I lived those years. Great music, great cars, great fashion (unless you were fat, of course), but a great world? No. It's better now, but we still have a lot to achieve to make us a great nation. I can still love the music of the 60s, though...

Also "I'm A Man" was featured on Mad Men when Don went to LA To see Megan.

When I watch these clips, I am transported back to those Saturday mornings - I get the same anticipation and excitement. The styles come back to me, and in my mind's eye, I can see my older brother and sister getting ready for school.

As a Brit living in Ireland for decades I just marvel at the way the little Island stuck somewhere in the Atlantic owned the American charts in the late Sixties led by the Beatles of course! Even the most American of bands Sir Douglas Quintet thought to get a hit they had to make out they were an English band and what’s more: it worked!

What's so great about this is that this is a self-selected audience. The studio may have been able to "pick and choose" who could be there, but it was from a pool of people who already wanted to be there. They are already motivated to show off their dance moves and glad to hear the music presented over a good sound system. I bet, for some, it would be a story they still tell today.
