Nice segment. Cool to see him do a little bit as “Archie” and to remind us that a lot went into portraying a character and that a real person and a professional was behind all that. He and Jean Stapleton were just so good in those roles.

By ‘76, he WAS Archie Bunker in a way. That character belonged to him. It was fascinating and very interesting to hear him talk about improvisation during rehearsals. Once the actors got comfortable with their characters, I’m sure they added tons of their own lines and zingers, especially Carroll!

I now realize the suffering addicts go through. Watching my son struggle and battle his addiction has been literally living in the devil's hell. Just sheer brilliance. They always say how Walter White wouldn't exist without Tony Soprano. And I always say that Tony wouldn't exist without Archie. Yes the shows' premises were very different on the surface, but ultimately they both were complex characters examining the deepest darkest parts of modern American society via virtuoso actors and writing. And to take it one more level, Archie doesn't exist without Ralph Kramden. Absolute geniuses, and credit to Mr. Norman Lear, who unbelievably is still with us.

Several years ago, an interview was given to Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton. When asked to do an impersonation of their respective characters on "All in the Family", both O'Connor and Stapleton politely declined. Glad to see Carroll's Archie Bunker impersonation done here! I remember that interview where they decline on Marie and Donny Osmond Show. He probably did it here because it was during the 1970s and All in the Family was so popular. By 2000, a whole new generation had passed and they both had moved on to other projects.

@@dolphingurls8204 I agree with you, I think she did not like making that voice. I sort of recall that she might have said that in a different interview. Also, people always think of Arc as the one being made to look bad. But after all these years it's not Archie that looked bad at all., it's the Edith character. Go figure that a so called "liberal" writer would end up making Archie look good and a female look bad--shades of leftist sexism and projection. You look at people today, what they say about Archie is that he was right and meathead was wrong. But it wasn't an archie type character that was oppressive to women, it was "liberal" projection onto conservatives. Just like today, nothing changed.

And yet every thing about "conservation" that "Archie" said was just as true as what Carrol said in this interview. We have to build wooden outhouses AND we have to conserve resources. "Liberalism" today is synonymous with mental retardation. Archie was nearly always right and meathead wrong.
