Just the music (Track 8, 'American Beauty', from the 'American Beauty: Original Motion Picture Score') and the bag...
This track is NOT "Any Other Name". That track is similar to this one, but it plays at the end of the film.
"It was one of those days, when it's a minute away from snowing, and there's this electricity in the air. You can almost hear it, right? And this bag was just dancing with me, like a little kid begging me to play with it, for fifteen minutes.
That's the day I realized there was this entire life behind things, and this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know, but it helps me remember. I need to remember.
Sometimes there is so much... beauty... in the world, I feel like I can't take it, and my heart is just going to cave in."

It is so sad, that we as a society have lost our sense of wonder. When I was a child, the smallest things were inherently beautiful. The littlest thing would grab my interest and hold it. Beauty was everywhere. Now I have grown cold and jaded. This video helps me to remember. I need to remember.

I love that about childhood. I remember being fascinated to see new colours when doing painting at school. One of my favourite pics is my son, still a toddler, crawling and looking at a piglet on our cousin's farm. I have a similar one of my grandson looking at a snail.

I love magic...or “illusion” and when I laugh or am amazed at a card trick I feel it keeps me young. I am 41, getting married soon, am quite mature, but still have this child-like wonder and love for the world.

When I first saw this movie I was crying on that scene, seriously, I was so deeply touched, It was like awaking from a dream. We grow up and we get blind, we are unable to see the real beauty of the world, of the smallest things, but this realisation can help us a lot. That's why I think that movie is very important and everyone, who is bored with life should see it.

This video speaks to those of us who appreciate the small things. A smile from a stranger, a warm coffee on a winter's day, the sense of wonder as a child discovers something new, the look on a loved one's face as you encourage them to speak more about their passion. The playful motion of a plastic bag. This speaks to the people who are content with the moment, because it is about what we make of it. We can be completely satisfied with what we have, who and where we are. Because we are at one with the universe. A universe that is radiating warmth, hope and togetherness. A universe that believes in us, and us it. I watch this video because I need to remember.

This music reminds me of these beautiful fall evenings when I would sit with my late father. We would be outside on the porch as the leaves fell, sometimes we would run out of words and just sit there and live the moment. I think of him fondly and I miss him, and all our moments. These moments have left lasting impression on my mind, and some days I have to remember that he's been gone nearly 2 years, still feels like I found out yesterday. I still feel he's waiting for me there, on that porch as the leaves fall around him, as he says "Hey B why don't you join me". He was and is my greatest memory and best friend. My father Richard E. Sometimes on autumn afternoons I sit under a huge tree outside my unit. I watch the red, amber, golden and brown leaves drift with the wind into the air. They dance like fireflies, twisting and turning. I don't care for thought much at this time, I just sit. Perhaps mesmerised by the effortless beauty. Perhaps I just hope that this exact moment will last a lifetime.

The thing that haunts me now is that I used to watch this specific scene over and over again. I even remember discussing it with my old friends, who also found this film mesmerizing. I was captivated by its simplicity and depth, its artfulness. But now, after 5 years, I accidentally came across this video again. Now I am watching it, but I feel nothing at all. It is just a bag floating around; there’s nothing more to it. I wonder what has happened to me, where did I lose that sense of wonder? It feels like once there was an open door stretching to a world full of miracles, marvels, surprises, and oddities. Now it has been closed, probably forever. Maybe that is the reason I feel so empty inside, working 9-5, six days a week, with my biggest goal being able to have a comfortable home and a normal daily life. Oh, how I miss my old carefree self

i love how everyone interprets this in their own way for me, this symbolises being stuck and unable to be truly free. just when the plastic bag goes high enough and you think it's going to fly away, it comes back down to the same place. it's unable to escape this single area, and keeps floating around, in different angles, trying to get out. but eventually in the end, it falls back in the same place.

@jl4260
@jl4260 10 жыл бұрын
The beauty of 'art' is that it's open to interpretation. I love the simplicity of this scene, but I can understand why people wouldn't see the big deal or would think it's pretentious. When I first watched it a year ago I didn't get much from it, but after the suicide of one of my best friends less than a month ago I decided to watch it again and got a whole new meaning from it. Some people said they feel like the bag is dancing and is free but I don't get that. I feel like if it was a person it'd be someone who's just experienced the loss of a loved one and is in the whirlwind of grief: being thrashed around because its lost control. It feels empty and helpless and deflated. And trapped in its own isolation. I don't feel happy or liberated when I watch it. But that's just me. My take on it could be influenced by what I'm going through in life right now.

But at the same time that’s why films are meant to be s a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images it’s not bad if anyone has another interpretation but I understand why you are feeling under that context

The simplicity of the bag floating is the main idea behind it, with so much going on in this world we are losing time everyday to stop n stare at the trivial and beautiful things happening all around us. I suppose the director is trying to capture such short living beauty hiding in the moment that we rarely take time to consider or appreciate......

Sometimes we get so caught up in our lives only focusing on bigger problems, but if you can just take a minute to step outside and see the sky, clouds, trees, grass, flowers or even buildings... they have so much beauty in it, you just have to take a moment and not think about anything and see it.

How ironic. The point of this scene is to see the underlying beauty in life (hence the title of the movie) and not the superficial lie that we are told by society is "beauty" (like the pretty blond cheerleader in the movie who felt her only worth was how she was seen sexually) and to get to see this clip, I had to watch a commercial featuring the Superbowl and beer.

It's not necessary that you'll see beauty in this particular picture. It's your own understanding of beauty. And we all need to learn to experience pleasure and joy in little things in our life. I have one thing in my mind that might help you to "see beauty" again like the first time in your life. How long have it been since you looked at sky? Not just glanced but really was looking and staring at sky. I found myself one day staring at sky and smiling because it was so beautiful and peaceful. I was standing like for a minute and looking at moving clouds. And I felt so little but a part of something big. It gave me the energy and motivation to keep going literally and figuratively. (Sorry for my english).

Im literally the biggest fan of sky and especially of the clouds but even they can not make me feel the same way. I was very peaceful while looking at it but then i felt lost. I felt lost in toughts and ended up felt like im the most unnecessary person in the world. So you are right. Its about understanding the beauty.

Nothing matters, literally nothing matters. Me typing, you working, you living, me living, we eating, we breathing, we killing, he killing. Once you die, it's all over that's it you will NEVER be back. What you have right now is all you'll EVER have, these 50-100 years or so is all the time that's been reserved for you. So do WHAT YOU LIKE, if you like to sit and watch TV do it. If you like to walk around and spitting on the sidewalk, do it. Because after this there's nothing.

This is my favourite piece of music and footage , for the past few days I've been angry and depressed . I've felt like the plastic bag, being buffeted around without any control , helpless to the wind and circumstance. After many hours of watching and reflecting , I've come to realise I'm not the bag , I'm the wind . That's what I choose to be ! free to go and move wherever I want . Choice is a beautiful , it makes us appreciate what we have .

to search for a deep rational meaning is to miss the point, for chaos cannot be tamed by order.... to become the bag, you must first let go of all purpose or intent.... move with nature instead of against it... embrace surrender and acceptance, give up the desire to dominate and control... only when you allow yourself to be one with the universe, can you find the ability to move freely and forcefully, liberated from all shackles and constraint... only then does doing require little effort and produce the most dramatic results... only then you find that what once drained your energy with resistance is become your source of inexhaustible power...

The bag is symbolic... but the piano is like an old man reminiscing... remembering days and people long gone, who only live on in his mind... knowing that one day they will be gone along with him. The beauty of this scene is that all of us Can find beauty in it, but different beauties. It's not about understanding it, it's about feeling it, feeling it in your personal way. That's life, we can even find beauty in a bag if we want, and it's beautiful. It's beautiful because if we find beauty in this we've listened to our inner voice, to our soul. Society can tell us what it Wants, that you have to be successful to be someone and to be happy, to be like Buddy Kane (was he really happy ?). But wait a second and look at Lester, he was a loser, (sure ?) but when he died he was smiling. He was smiling because he listened to his inner voice and to his soul, and He found Beauty. This is amazing and I hope that all the people who've watched The movie could find their beauty, I'll look for it too.

I've listened to this song so much. I've often listened to this song and smoked a joint of some tremendous weed and wonder how many people who were inspired from this beautiful picture and how many others found pure beauty watching the wind play with a plastic bag and some leaves and have often wondered how many people have felt the same. Also another great Kevin Spacey picture called Shrink is absolutely brilliant. He plays a therapist who's wife took her own life and and how he was barely functioning and using cannabis as something to take the edge off and to try to be present with his patients his family. Robin Williams, Robert Loggia and many others made it a great film. I'm also on a lot of pills as well. I'm disabled and dying. I have been in incredible pain and have very bad physical and mental illness. I suffer from Fibromyalgia, H1N1 Vaccine Damage, both knees are shot but my left one is worse than my right. My right leg is swelling and filling with fluid and that's all new and the doc prescribed me a compression sock for it. My left knee is basically blown and I'm in constant agony. I have my L4 and L5 vertebrae are slammed and fused together into one unit and the discs between are sandwiched and it's compressing my sciatic nerve causing extreme neuropathy to where my legs either feel numb, itchy or burning sensations. Ive blown my left shoulder and botn knees. I have PTSD, Major Depression Disorder, Night Terrors and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I was given a litany of Opiate/Opioid Pain Pills - MS Contin, Codeine Contin, Dilaudid Hydromorphone, Percocet, Tylenol #3's. I was taking 10 to 12mg's of Xanax per day for 15yrs. The pain pills were eventually making the pain worse because I was over prescribed to almost the max dose on every single one. I've had prostate surgery to see if the tumor that grew was cancerous or benign. Twice it's been benign and now it's bugging me again. I wonder if anyone else feels the way I do and I'm also a recovering alcoholic and drug addict with 3 different sober dates for 3 different classes of substances. 19yrs clean from hard drugs like Meth, Cocaine & others like MDMA, I celebrated 13yrs sober from booze in April and I'm 629 days clean today from Opiate pain pills. I finally broke down to my Family Doctor in 2021 and he referred me to the town's Suboxone/Methadone clinic and I haven't used an opiate or opioid pain pill since that day. I'm prescribed Suboxone by my Addictions Doctor and my Addictions Counselor and I meet monthly and I've also been coming off of the benzos as well and they converted the 12mg of Xanax daily and it worked out that 12mg of Xanax per day is equal to _65 milligrams_ of Diazepam (Valium). I'm now down from the 65mg to 16mg per day. I'm also in Therapy and meet with my Therapist monthly or even as much as I need. Things are well. I don't have much to complain about but I am fighting everyday. I don't _want_ to use Opiates at all anymore but once in awhile I get a craving. I don't put myself in places or hang out with idiots that only care about themselves and really only hang out with me to either get drugs from me or to try and get high with me. I was pretty much a loner though and still am. No 12 step based treatment because the local chapter here doesn't care about anonymity because they approach you in stores call you by name and ask you if you've relapsed etc and then they blab it all over to everyone else and while I haven t had a relapse the drama at that damned AA/NA House is so full of drama that I'd rather take my chances than go to that place again. I'm a pretty private person and am not a social butterfly by _any_ means but will open if I'm approached the right way. I'm still lucky to be with my girlfriend of 8yrs it'll be 9yrs in September. I got clean for myself but my family is so much happier because they were rightly so worried because I was using so much that I would get so sick from the withdrawls it sucked but now that I'm clean I'm unsatisfied with life but I'm hoping it gets better. You all seem like a great bunch of people. Stay Awesome and Frosty.
