American Bitterns

American Bittern is in the same family as Herons and Egrets and are a migratory shorebird. They Breed in northern US and Canada and winter across the southern US and into Mexico. Often very difficult to spot because they are masters at blending into their preferred habitat of reeds and shore grass. Approximating the size of the Green Heron, Inexperienced birders often mistake juvenile Green Herons for Bitterns.
