I went into the series not expecting much, but it is so so good, maybe there’s one episode that was hard going but the series as a whole resonated with me on so many levels. The Chinese mythology aspect is so well managed mostly (did find that heavenly party a little cringe and slow, wish they didn’t modernized it into an award party so the gods are more respectable and believable), having grew up being very familiar with the original literature and many adaptations of journey to the west (1995 A Chinese Odyssey being one the best), I feel this series really honored it in a really deep and authentic way and yet still making it their own. The Asian racial experience told in such a subtle way moved me in a profound way that I was not expecting. Really there needs to be a second season for this series to continue to tell these cultural stories.

I agree about that flashback sequence.It's unbelievably cringe and changes an important part of the original story.It's like they can't decide whether they want to pay homage to old jttw adaptations,modernizing the story,or just making a parody.

I thought it was a very creative take on chinese mythology that utilizes the familiarity of folklore and adapted it to be a really well put together show that explores cultural heritage and personal identity from a generation to generation viewpoint. Overall pretty good. You see some people saying how the depiction of folklore like Sun Wu Kong etc is not accurate when compared to the traditional depiction but that is not the point of the show. The point of the show is to highlight the second generation experience in America. It is sort of a coming of age story but the main focus is on how one's cultural identity is skewed/ thrown out of harmony and balance due to the clashing of eastern and western traditions. Sure there are some artistic liberties taken in order to adapt the show for western audiences, while at the same time preserve the essence of chinese culture and history. But that doesn't mean that the show is now awful because it doesn't line up with what people are used to seeing.

American Born Chinese "ABC" wasnt the story we though it would be from the thriller, they actually did a good job shielding the main events of the movie from the thriller. Having said that, this movie is generally interesting and fun to watch, but it depicts different view points to audiences, depending on your expectation about the movie, or what aspect of the story you enjoyed most. "ABC" made used of several historical facts and materials which can be vetted by scholars in asian history and comic experts. I did fancy how the story was related to the earthly realm and earth became the center piece of it all. Some aspect of the movie were questionable or rather unnecessary like the TV show. But at least they didnt draw away from what occurred starting form the first episode. Also did a good job preserving the Chinese culture and history. Michelle yeon gave me a whole new vibe, she has a way of scoring any role she is given that's one of the reasons she is an Oscar actress. Jin Wang who later became an important piece in the puzzle, Amelia, Christine Wang, Simon Wang, including every other key cast and crew did put in their heart and soul in this Movie. Hopefully we will be seeing them again for another season. The theatrical effects was very good, in some part it fell off but picked up again, Wonderful fight scenes especially at the last two episodes. All in all, American Born Chinese was a brilliant piece of work that is fused with chinese art and culture. It's a movie made for everyone.

I think the commetcials were probably the best part of the show, i just loved the way they created them amd culminatared in epic speech at the talkshwo. Generally it talks about the position of the asian acters in hollywood.

Amazing show to be honest.the first few episodes were ok, then it got a boring in the middle but the last episode was epic. If you like a silly high school drama show with fantasy in it, this is the thing for you. I hope we get to see season 2 soon! Pros: 1) drama ( jin's parents Rocky relationship was shown in a great way and so was jin's highschool life) 2) action ( amazing fight sequences) 3) story (The story was fresh and good and the main character was not your typical loser who becomes a hero) Cons: 1) special effects (the special effects look cheap at moments but they were good in the last episode) 2) pacing (It's a bit too slow and when it picks up , it's only for a moment and then it gets backs to it's slow pace) 3) Charectors (Charectors like Suzy, jamie and wukong are not handled properly. Like why is the monkey King so weak in this show when he defeated giant demons in the journey to the west, also why is Jamie even in the show like his part was stretched out for no reason when it barley affects the story's outcome and in the end Suzy was barley in the show. Her screentime is like 5 minutes) That's it from me. Overall this show was good, a straight 7/10 from me

Loved season 1, as a die hard fan of Sun Wukon the Monkey King, also notice that Jin is wearing an orange tank top over a blue t-shirt, a shout out to Son Goku from Drgaon ball Z, which is based loosely of of the Monkey King.

The monkey King with Jackie Chan and jet li is one of my favorite movies I think you need to see that movie before you watch this show to understand kind of the back story but I think the story was good. Not quite as good as the movie but I really love the show of binge watched it

It's a shame how hollow and weak the storytelling is. Any attempt at foreshadowing is just so transparent they might as well be telling us out loud what they're failing to show us. Damn shame. So many big names with big talent (everyone except Ronny Chiang that is), all wasted. I feel like if they were going to use most of the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once, they might as well have let A24 take care of the whole series. Then you just know it would have been great. Instead it's just okay, bordering on Spanish-language daytime soap opera levels of cringey.

Maybe because I watched the classics, I found certain parts (e.g. reference to the ancient immortals) very, very cringey and storytelling was very weak. I understand trying to modernize the Journey to The West and the fusion of cultures. but it feels very trashy and disrespectful - there are deities that some religions are worshipping but look at how the wardrobe dress them up at the party. especially Episode 4, where they had the "jade emperor palace party", it was so difficult to go through that episode. a huge disappointment especially after all the hype and the cast

Rimbaud for fact. Even a native french talker can barely understand his poems, yet he created and changed a lot. Same for Van Gogh and all kind of many arts like music Beethoven/Mozart whatever. If you can criticize even if you can't do it, that means you cannot say it's good, or bad, or "revolutionary". Double edged sword argument.

Yeah it begins with a slight racist remark "hey you are both chinese, let's make you friends by force!" And then smashing Wukong's story to the ground lmao. So many things wrong I could feel that in the trailer already. Hence why I went straight to the spoiler ending. Sounds indeed cringey. As someone that is very attached to this culture, I cringed as well just from a trailer so I can't imagine for you on every episodes lmfao.
