Completely agreed with this assessment. At the end of the day, the variety of Bresse imported in US it’s the production one, so while we want to have the standard appearances, we need to keep in mind that those are raised mostly for their meat.

Thanks for this and your other videos. I was concerned with the yellow on my first rooster, and talked to a few other breeders here in sweden - and it was a more or less common situation. So we are all working on improving that, the main change was two breeders importing a whole new line spring of 2023 - and they are now selling eggs and hatchlings from that line which looks very promising, both exterior looks, but also the amount of meat and the speed of growth. :)

Thank you for the American Bresse videos. Love them. I’m just starting my first flock of this breed. Their 8 weeks old now. These videos have been extremely helpful. When you free range your birds with electric netting. Do you clip their wings to stay in? Or do they normally not fly out? I have a patrol dog on the property that has been known to kill birds if they get out of their enclosure. I’ve been using enclosed chicken tractors. But I’d like to put them in an electric fence area to free range a bigger area.

Thanks for watching and if you ever have something you want me to cover let me know. I don’t clip wings just because I don’t have time. I do have some that fly over but if you move them a lot and give them room most will stay in. If they get out I don’t care what happens to them because I don’t want there chicks because they will be getting out also, but I have had some that will live in trees all summer and Fly back in the net to eat every day 😂

I feel you were talking straight to me Chase about the yellowing in the feathers. 😂😂 but I must say it's not at the top of my list. Also, I can't wait to get them dark eyes because I have no bird with darks eyes. Great video my friend, I'm taking all this in and I'm steady changing my priorities the more I learn. Meat has always been on the top them bones and feathers don't digest so well. 😉

I think you have made wise choices for the standards you want for your birds. Thanks for a very practical list of standards to look for while raising the birds. Question:s At what age do you start the finishing process? Do you use grain/milk or cracked corn/milk? Thanks a million for another great vieo!

I've been hatching my own meat birds for 20+ years. I earn a living by selling poultry meat, NOT chicks. Chick sellers don't select to the same standard as meat sellers. At 10 weeks I make my first cull. I remove all larger roosters that don't move smoothly, have questionable feet, or have a dirty vent area. They go to market At 12 weeks, I put aside largest hens and roosters that move smoothly, have sound feet, and have clean vent area. I process the rest for market Of the birds preselected, I weigh, assess carcass structure, and determine best fleshing. The best go into a breeding pen, the rest are processed. Selection process culls over 90%, and with proper selection, such a selection rate helps preserve vigour and the quality of the culls. Yes, this is the critical detail of a meat vendor. A meat vendor is focussed on producing breeding culls that are profitable to raise and sell. We don't eat feathers, combs, and skin colour does not impact flavour. This is important to always keep in mind. While there is a benefit to a breed standard, and a benefit to using it as a guide in selections to avoid drift, it's always useful to remember which traits earn a profit and which don't.

How many roosters to hen ratio do you use? I’m excited to have three larger hoop tractors for our breeding flock next year. Your birds have turned out really nice and chunky, especially the ones with the darker eyes and legs. We are really happy with them!!! I have a feeling our other grow outs the same age would have turned out similar had we pulled out the extra non-breeder quality roosters sooner. 🤣
@The.Recreational.Homestead
@The.Recreational.Homestead 7 ай бұрын
It really depends on the rooster most of that being his age. Any rooster should be able to cover 8 hens but a good young rooster will cover 15. Thanks for sharing your experience and your support over the years!

Great video! We are fellow Michiganders and looking to start our Bresse flock. How many do you recommend starting with to get a sustainable flock going? They are an investment so what would you say is the bare minimum?

I have some of your chickens and some from another breeder and yours are bigger and have darker legs. I plan to select the best ones and set up spiral breeding. How long do you keep a rooster and hens respectively?
@The.Recreational.Homestead
@The.Recreational.Homestead 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing and thanks for your support. Just keep the best, a lot of times that means replacing old ones with new ones (if you are breeding good 😉) I keep hens as long as they look good because I want there longevity to be past on, with that being said if I was sort on space I would replace them with pullets. The roosters I replace as soon as I have a young one to replace them with. Roosters get fat and fertility goes down. I hope this helps, it’s a good idea for a video
