I thought the same as you said about American business culture. However, I recently moved to a group close with C-suites. I have to say fancy formal words. My boss reminded me of hierarchy many times. My boss and coworkers seems to be patronizing all the time. They only talk to C-suites and their own team. They don’t talk to less senior associates in other teams. They don’t talk to security and facility team, baristas and so on.

Americans are not direct. Trust me, I’ve worked in 90K employee company and in 4 employee company. The most direct way of expressing genuine feelings will get you reported to your boss immediately.
