I saw Greg first play when he was at High School. At 17 and 18 years of age he first played Queensland Cup against fully developed men and he carved them up. At 6'4" he would have been a great Wide Receiver in American Football. My son got Greg's autograph when Greg was 17 years old because even though my son was about 8 years old at the time he recognised that Greg was going to play for Australia. Greg is genuinely an unassuming guy . A great Indigenous Australian .

Gotta love GI , a big man of league. When they reach a certain level in league like this we refer to them as immortals. There are currently 8 and only 5 living. GI and JT are both in line to become immortals. Players like GI become legends when paired with a playmaker like Jonathon Thurston. Thank you for watching and when the others wake up,its 2.30am and I have been at work, they will be able to direct you to some amazing games.

*Billy Slater is the best fullback of all time.* He completely changed the game; in offence and defence! Unfortunately, there aren’t the best highlight videos of him. I’ll hopefully make one, someday. He scored over 180 tries, inc. 40+ more for Australia/Qld. He had the best structural defence in the NRL. He ALWAYS turned up on the inside in support and scored many tries. He had so many injuries and yet still came back and performed. He’s such an inspiration.

Definitely should check out Johnathon Thurston - awesome story, awesome player, awesome role model. Was told he was too small to play and would never see top grade, in his 1st year he game up his premiership ring to his mate & captain of the team (who missed the grand final due to injury and couldn't play) and never knew if he was going to get another as he was transferring to another team (who was for years at bottom of ladder) - became one of the greatest in the game ... and finally got his premiership ring in 2015 in one of the best grand finals of all time (won in extra time).

The commentator is calling him a Goanna because he does the lizard crawl. The Goanna is our large lizard down under. He's also an indigenous Australian. The indigenous can take on the forms of native Australian wildlife as part of their Dreamtime story telling. I remember a kalkadoon aboriginal came to our school and shared a Dreamtime story with us. As she was telling the story she'd take on the form of the animals. It was truly amazing.. ... I'm aboriginal decent too by the way.

** ANOTHER ONE OF MY INSANELY LONG COMMENTS** GI announced his retirement in 2019, from the NRL competition, where he had certainly achieved the level of being "an immortal" (agree with Sharna there), but this is not the end of he story. He had played from 2005 in the NRL professionally, and represented Australia internationally. There was a lot of controversy even in 2005 (when he started his career) over whether he should be playing for NSW or QLD in the State of Origin grudge match series. Most of his career has been spent being an absolute freight train of a player, as a full back big man. So, sort of the same as a Jonah Lomu ... who reinvented the "big winger" in Rugby Union, GI is the proto-model of the Rugby League "big full back". Where the Full Back serves as a kicker and the last line of defence, GI was able to make those big runs all the way back up the 100 metres to score. His strength, power, tenacity and pure skill means that, even in the limited downs version of the game, where positions are less specialised than in Rugby Union, he creates opportunities due to the requirement to double or triple team him, just to stop his progress. In 2020, he was lured back out of retirement by an English Rugby League club the Warrington Wolves for the 2021 season, playing as a Centre, in the English Rugby League competition. By playing him as Centre, a position which allows him to use his Rugby League "on pitch" IQ, in a (slightly) less physically tiring position. If you are interested in the sports science - here is an amazing bit of research on the amount of distance rugby players in different positions run, and the average occurrence of high-intensity runs per match. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23591946/ It should be noted that a FB in a rugby league game, over the 80 minutes, will run approx 7.8km (4.8 miles) during the 50 odd minutes of actual game action - during the 80 minutes. GI is "built different" as a full back; his work rate, and mileage, was especially high, and having watched GI games, he was probably pushing upto 9km to 10km in an average game, so between 5.5 miles to 6 miles. During his career to date, GI has played: 268 pro-club games, with nearly all of those played in the NRL plus 76 "representative games" (games for his State (QLD), International caps for Australia, All Star games and the Prime Ministers XV) So if we call that a 15 full year career, GI has played 344 games, or an average of 23 appearances a year. This shows something really amazing about rugby players (applies to league and union)... Now, on comparing NRL and NFL, Rugby League requires a higher level of stamina than NFL, and by quite some margin. Rugby League players run at a rate of about 0.96 miles per 10 minutes of actual play time, where NFL players run at a rate of 1.12 miles per 10 minutes of play time. This is because NFL is slightly more "explosive" than Rugby League, as in the 11 odd minutes of actual play time in a game, a Wide Receivers or Cornerbacks, who typically travel the longest distances, will run about 1.25 miles a game. However, if one looks at it "clock to clock" things get interesting. Rugby League / Union is normally 2 x 40 minute half's plus a 10 minute half time = 90 minutes total whistle to whistle. So if we do some rough rounding that means they are doing about 0.05 miles per minute whistle to whistle. Given 5280 feet per mile, Rugby League players run a distance of 26,400 feet per game, about 293 feet per minute on average throughout the 90 minutes. That's about 97 yards per minute of official game time including the half time. American Football is 4 x 15 minute quarters, plus (officially) say, 12 minutes of half time (however we both know that this differs a lot). So let's say 75 minutes of game and half time. We will ignore the fact that players are pulled on and off all the time... let's pretend. American Footballers run 1.25 miles, which is 6600 feet, so approx 88 feet per minute of official time so 29 yards per minute of official game and half time. Oh, and I hope you remembered it was the first game of 3 of the State of Origin Rugby League grudge match. I rang my brother who is living in Australia, and is just a couple of km away from the stadium, and we both "rooted" for the mighty blues (NSW). My niece and sister in law were both wearing their Maroon (QLD) jerseys. I understand that as a result of NSW winning in an utter drubbing, NSW 50 QLD 6, my niece is now refusing to give daddy hugs until QLD beat the blues in the next game, and if my brother wishes his darling with to prepare him dinner, it's likely that it will be served at room temperature, without any garnish, in a metal bowl, from a bright yellow can, with friendly red words emblazoned on it which say "Discount Dogfood"... Qld supporters (such as my niece, sister in law, and everyone my brother works with) are not going to take that result very well.

Now just a quick reminder - as GI plays Rugby League, the player numbers run in the opposite pattern to Rugby Union. So 1, 2 and 3 are back row positions in RL, where the similar back row postions in Rugby Union are 13, 14 and 15.

When you said "he looks like a Kokodo Dragon" you hit the nail on the head. GI is an indigenous Australian, also referred to historically as being "Australian Aboriginal" by people who actually understand what aboriginal actually means, but the term is certainly "loaded", and not PC, however - I'm British ... as is my "pommy" brother living in Oz. GI's celebration is of the Goanna lizard, (a term for Monitor lizards) which can grow to be upto 8ft long, and are very important for the tribal peoples. Just on the point of my choice of language. I personally refuse to subscribe to political correctness when it's not justified, but I'm equally happy to use preferable "correct" terms when other terms are misleading (so in my mind, "American Indian" is an inappropriate term for the native American nations - due to the fact that the peoples are not in any way Indian, but Australian Aboriginal (where Aboriginal means those originally present) is accurate). And as an unwanted aside, which I make to anyone from an indigenous Australian background, the relatively recent trend of suggesting that the settlement of the Australian mainland was an act amounting to "warfare" is one which is unwise at best. Whilst cases such a Marbo accept that the tribal peoples had a link to the land which was unrecognised when Britain set up colonies (it was viewed legally as being Terra Nullis, ie. a land where there was no system of property ownership)the fact stands that the peoples living there were doing so, in small tribal communities, which regularly went to war with each other over the rights and control of the resources which were upon the land, not the land as an asset itself. The Australian tribal peoples were hunter gatherers, as they had been since their Dreamtime, for circa 40,000 years. This is not a criticism, and is not suggesting that they were wrong, but it describes the facts. Neither land as a property right, nor farming, nor the mechanisms of a nation state (ie, feudalism for example with layers of apportioned control etc) existed. Britain's record is clear, in that where these elements existed, it always negotiated treaties (fair or not) and settled via trade, goods and agreements of protection - NZ with the Maori peoples, right across all of the pacific islands, Africa, India, and with the Native American tribes and First Peoples of Canada. If one uses the terms "war", "invasion" and alike to describe the settlement, then the legal standpoint changes; one ceases to have Britain erroneously fail to recognise that whilst property rights did not exist that links to the land and the land's resources existed (something for which redress is possible) and instead one must accept that the technically superior army in war one (even if the side who won didn't realise it was a war). It is a moot point that when it comes to warfare "might is right", "possession is 9/10ths of the law" and that those who lose a war can't then go and demand compensation.
