Daniel, it was common back then for someone who went to work in the morning, to have someone who has just worked a nighshift get into the same bed. It's often overlooked when thinking about Britain and the vast wealth it created, the desperately poor people who physically made that wealth and lived in just appalling conditions.

3 men to a hammock in subs, according to my mate's dad. He also reckoned it was the best sleep you could have. Having bought myself a hammock for the woods, I can concur.

The origin of some British slang terms comes from this period too. Urine was used in several key industries from fertilizers to dye fixing, and the lower incomes families who sold theirs were described as being "piss poor". Then below them were the ones who didn't even "have a pot to piss in"...

Yes, that was Guy's first ever TV series... The thing I remember the most about about the series was Guy and his mate calling each other 'Chief' a lot 😂

Hey guys, do you know he holds the world speed record for the motorcycle wall of death? The recording of the live broadcast of his successful attempt is on his channel. It shows everything he went through in preparation for it. Well worth a watch.

One thing that keeps being mentioned is people ALWAYS having beer, but compared to modern beers they'd have been fairly weak, especially in a hot environment where the alcohol would evaoprate off!

Hi Guys Love everything related to Guy. 👍🇬🇧 It's old, but you would love the series, 'Dad's Army'. It poked fun, in a very British way, at the Home Guard in WW2. Try the one where they capture a German U-boat crew. It's hilarious. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Watched that series several times. In my old age now i remember the steam trains,, cattle/sheep/coal wagons stopping in my town. Steam traction engines stopping at a pond near us for water. Wind mills in my area grinding wheat into flour. Watching all the olde moving picture of my youth.

There’s a theory called nominative determinism where your name defines your role - eg Mr Baker the baker (of course those names come from jobs in the first place, when surnames started to become a thing in parts of Europe)

Edu-tainment. Rarely done right (History Channel anyone!?), the Brits do a good job with it. For all the hate for the BBC, the legacy of the license and first commercial channels in the UK left their mark on programming - one I'm bloody grateful for. Sir David Attenborough did more than just film a few chimps.

I’m sorry about this comment but if you listen to the youth of today it’s like Britain was built on slavery and white privilege, where it was built on hard graft and the inventiveness of the engineers, as shown in this series.
