As a German who has spent a year in Louisville, KY, I must defend the British boyfriend. Neither Louisville nor Kentucky are tourist magnets for Europeans, nor do they have any really outstanding international reputation that would require him to know either. Yes, some might have heard of the Kentucky Derby but that is a really rare fraction of Europeans if they have never travelled the U.S. It is not NYC, Miami, or LA… After seeing MANY videos of this kind, I seriously wonder, how many Americans could name the capital of Kentucky or place it on a map of the U.S.

I worked in the Middle East as a teacher and the deputy principal who was American said to me on my first day working there, “I love working with South Africans, you tell them to jump and they say how high” I was so shocked😂

English is widely spoken, it is only that there is a lot of English dialects and accents eg American accent, Scottish accent etc etc.

The fun part about this is: In 2017, I was on a hiking vacation through Somerset (UK) and stayed overnight in a town called Shepton Mallet. While there, I visited a pub and was chatting to the barkeeper. After about ten minutes, this man who assured me he'd never left the town he was born in, claimed to know where I was from. "You are from a farm outside a town in the upper-mid north of South Australia." I was speechless! Just from my everyday day speech, accent, and mannerisms, he'd pinpointed EXACTLY where I had spent the first 17 years of my life. Of course, I was 56 at the time and had spent 39 years living in Adelaide, but he still picked my origin.

Well, about languages.......In the Netherlands, especially in Amsterdam, it is more likely that you will be addressed in English than in Dutch :-) Outside Amsterdam, Dutch is predominantly spoken, but almost everyone speaks good English. I don't speak American English, much to my daughters' amusement. I speak BBC English, which seems rather arrogant to them :-) But yes, that's how I learned it.

As an Australian, I encountered the issue with dates when i was 23 (1984) and ordered some equipment from the USA... To arrive in Adelaide SA, by airmail, by 4/1/85 (4th January 1985)... It was sent by surface mail so that it would get here on or before 1st April! Since then, no matter where I'm dealing with, I ALWAYS use the 1-Jan-85 format. There's no possibility of confusion & no million dollar penalties involved!😢
