I think she forgot the I beg you gesture. Which is practically opening your palm and putting the other open palm on it. I hope I'm making sense tho. Apart from that, she did very well 🇬🇭❤️

The "Adowa" dance of the Asantes has a lot of hand and feet gestures that they use to discreetly send messages. While dancing they communicate love and hate and it's fascinating how they can have a whole conservation with that dance.

I recognise all of them but never would 'translate' them individually. In the context of a live meeting with others, it's very clear what the person is trying to express

The second one with the thumb was as bad as the middle finger as kids, only learned about the middle finger gesture from American movies. This brings back so many memories😅.

The most important thing is the facial expression. The hand gestures can mean multiple things but the facial expression can pinpoint the exact gesture you’re trying to put across.

The first gesture …it’s the same in Uganda 🇺🇬 (the 3 finger thing) It means “You are in trouble” (sibling snitching), “good for you” or “it hurts”, the Eye gesture “We shall see”, and the clapping “ I’m done” or “ “ I wash my hands off you” or when someone is giving you the tea and you are in shock or the tea is interesting. The snap of the finger will be like “aha!” Like “that’s it”. Snapping several times.., is the same for us. All the gestures. Even shrugging the shoulders once is like “no” but in a disrespectful way.

Action speaks louder than words they say which is soo true, and I think most of us need to start learning and practicing this straight up understanding hand gestures, bcuz it saves u a lot of energy that would be wasted by shouting.

The "I don't know" gesture goes with a shoulder raise. And flipping the way she did alone means "what?" or "what are you saying?"

As a Nigerian while growing up, I used to see a lot of hand gestures but as the world advanced people became quite conscious of how they present themselves. Then you see hands fling but not common a thing anymore

In our older generations you find a lot of things similar to Africans that we didn't know we're African but some gestures are the same but have different meanings so we might misinterpret some

The first sign can mean different things, but when it is done once with the lower lip tucked into the mouth and the upper teeth showing like a snarling dog, then it actually means "It serves you right!". When it is done several times in quick succession with a grimacing face, it means one is in severe pain, or one is really hurt by someone or something. This one is normally accompanied by groans, etc. When it is done once in a big swipe WITH the mouth twisted to the right, the right cheek lifted up and the right eye nearly shut, then it means "Oh .... I missed it!" or "I nearly won!" Btw: When the thumb is straight up, it is not an insult. The thumb must be resting on the folded forefinger (or fingers) and pointing to the subject, with or without moving the first part of the thumb up and down, for that gesture to be considered an insult. So don't be afraid to use the "thumbs up" sign 👍, as long as the thumb is not pointing to anyone. However, if you don't want to be misconstrued when you are before some elders in a hamlet somewhere far from modernization who don't know about 👍, then don't use it there. Thanks. 👍😊

The most important hand gesture not to be done in Accra is the open palm or close thumbs up in an argument. Some gesture could have two means, eg the for i don't know could be used as a cheeky signal for someone. There is also the get the hell away from me signal from the women. That is a powerful left out.

Ghanaians have a lot gestures and movement that are so lingual and hard to understand. If you remember the Adowa dance, by that little girl, all her movements were saying something that, traditionally not everyone can understand easily. The Akan people especially, can use complicated words and proverbs, to confuse listener or shorten statements so the listener will have to apply deep intelligence to comprehend statements. In that case, the statements could be a warning or keeping the meaning from certain listeners around in a group.
