4:18 You're Correct - *Northern Ireland* has the unofficial *Ulster Banner.* 4:57 Scotland has a tiny population because it's mainly hills and lakes. Every few years I compare the stagnant population of *Scotland* with the slowly increasing population of historic county of *Yorkshire* (which is made up of 4 English counties). It's too much hard work trying to work out the entire population of *Yorkshire,* as there's a few populations of the 4 ceremonial counties (North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, and the East Riding of Yorkshire) listed by themselves for some reason. However the last time I checked, both *Scotland* and *Yorkshire* had around 5.5M each, so it's very likely that *Yorkshire* now has a bigger population. 7:25 A 2 mile road by me had 50+ pubs around 50 years ago. It then had around 30+ pubs when I was a kid. And today 20+ years later it has just 6 (3 of which could be argued aren't on the road, as 1 of them is a WMC around the back of a pub, and 2 of them are the bookmarks at each end). That's just a small example to show the scale of the pub industry declining, not to mention bars and nightclubs. 8:13 Irish Gaelic is pronounced Gay-Lick. Scottish Gaelic is pronounced Gal-Lick. 11:45 Incorrect - You can drink alcohol at home at any age. You can drink alcohol in licensed premises when you're 16yo if you're with an adult. And finally you can buy your own drinks when you're 18yo and have ID to prove it. 12:43 *Indian Curry, Chinese Curry* or *Thai Curry* have been constantly winning UK's best *Meal/Dish/Food* etc polls for 20+ years. It's usually *Indian* and if it's not, then it's *Thai* instead. *Spaghetti Bolognese* occasionally wins food polls too. *Chicken Masala* is what the award-winning restauranteurs from my city aka the record *Curry Capital of Britain* call *Chicken Tikka Masala.* Those restauranteurs have *Chicken Masala* which looks like the picture, or *Chicken Tikka* which is red coloured chicken pieces on a stick. There's no such thing as *Chicken Tikka Masala* in my city, despite what the majority of the UK's population call it. 20:44 *Eastenders* used to be the most popular in the 80s, and some of the 90s. *Coronation Street* used to be the most popular in the 90s and 00s. However *Emmerdale* is easily the most popular of the 10s and 20s as shown by it's countless *Best Soap* award wins over the last decade, and getting almost double the amount of viewers that *Eastenders* gets on average. 21:15 *Only Fools and Horses* is popular. However the majority of comedy suggestions on KZbin, are not of popular shows. The majority of the most-watched comedy TV shows get ignored by the internet, mainly *ITV sitcoms* like *Benidorm.* 22:58 Those numbers are much smaller than they should be. There's at least 300-500 Saturday and Sunday league clubs in my city alone, nevermind the 10-15 amateur and semi-professional clubs which all have actual stadiums with at least 1 stand, along with the professional clubs. 23:43 *St Davids* is the *smallest city in the UK by population.* However the *smallest city in the UK by area* is the 1 square mile *City of London* which is also a *county,* and the *3rd smallest city in the UK by population.* 28:11 Incorrect. *Birmingham* is the *biggest city in the UK by population,* as *Greater London* aka *London* is not a *city.* *Greater London* is a *county* and *region* which contains 2 cities in the previously mentioned *City of London,* and the 8 square mile *City of Westminster.*

Late on parade here, but the ‘Union Jack’ is the flagstaff, or post, upon which the ‘Union Flag’ flies, usually on a ship.
@crackpot148
@crackpot148 20 күн бұрын
You are wrong. In this context, Jack historically referred to a small flag in the RN (in which I served from 1966 to 1978). Jack is never used, and never has been, as an alternative term for a spar or staff, or "post" as you put it. The union flag is much smaller than the white ensign (hence union jack) and is flown from the jackstaff (so called because it is the staff on which the Union Jack is hoisted) at the bow of a RN ship when at sea. Of course "Jack" is also a casual general term for a RN sailor, especially in humorous dits. Hence shipborne helicopters be ing referred to as Jack's taxis.

As a Brit I feel it’s important to let you know, what here is SO different to heat across the pond! We’re just not built for it, our infrastructure is built to retain heat, we don’t have AC, our roads were literally melting this summer, we had about a week where it was 40 degrees Celsius, and it might have been the worst week of my life. I actually saw a lot of apology videos from Americans that now live in the UK on TikTok, because they felt first hand what it’s like when it gets hot here 😂

The UK drinking law is a bit more technical than just over 18's 16-17 you can have a drink at a restaurant if it is served with your meal and an adult (over 18) is present Due to the wording used, it is legal to drink in a private residence from the age of 5
@memkiii
@memkiii Жыл бұрын
It is still illegal to buy the drink regardless afaik. An adult still has to do that. Not that the law was really adhered to in the past. In the 70's, I (an 11 year old) was regularly sent to an off-licence or a pub to buy beer for my dad, and it was not uncommon to see parents in pubs giving their kids a shandy, and a packet of crisps while they had a beer. Much the same for cigarettes back then, and any excuse for a large bottle of cider.... I distinctly remember having my 18th birthday bash in a pub that I had been drinking in for a couple of years, and the landlord didn't bat an eyelid.

Weatherwise the UK will always be colder, Ohio sits around the 40th parallel which is the same as southern Europe, (Spain, Greece,Turkey). London sits on the 52 Parallel level with Alaska and Newfoundland, I live in the north of England Newcastle upon Tyne which shares it's parallel with Alaska and Siberia, the only thing that regulates the temperature of the UK to give us a moderate wet climate is the Gulf stream bit trivia, love the channel by the way, 👍

Presume someone's mentioned it in the comments but re. Churchill, he wasn't actually there that long. He took over in 1940 and just after WW2 ended in Europe in 1945 he was voted out in favour of the Labour leader Clement Attlee. Pretty much everyone, not least Clement Attlee, was stunned at this, given Churchill had just led us through the war. Like, the US was still fighting Japan at this point so people really wanted to move on from the war in Britain. Attlee served one term and then Churchill was voted in again a few years later. As a PM in peacetime he wasn't particularly great, but as a wartime leader, nobody better.

If you already got this, I'm sorry. The NHS never actually saw any of the money. It was basically political, who can B.S the best and get the most votes. It doesn't matter which way the public voted, nobody can deny that the NHS is suffering.
@Penddraig7
@Penddraig7 Жыл бұрын
It’s suffering is of it’s own making. Government doesn’t run the NHS, it’s run by trusts and an executive public body, they are responsible for how the budget is spent on a national level and local level. They are the issue, they are the ones who are mismanaging the NHS, it’s got nothing to do with which political party is in office. The NHS is the 3rd biggest Employer in the world, 3rd! It’s the 1st biggest Health Care service employer in the world, and when I say employer I am talking numbers of employees. The NHS has more employees than any other Health Care service in the world, the NHS! The UK is a 3rd the size of just California and it is the 21st most populated in the world and yet has the most Employees. The UK spends roughly the same GDP on the NHS as most of Europe, its within 1% of the Highest. The UK has the 5th highest GDP in the world, the highest GDP per population in the world, so with those statistics put together, the UK spends more per person on Healthcare than any other country in the world. The NHS doesn’t even make it into the top 10 healthcare providers in the world. People are just ignorant when it comes to the NHS, it’s treated like this pillar of greatness and excellence, it’s like a cult and essentially if you rightfully criticise it, you are scorned. It’s clearly not fit for purpose, it has been for decades, it’s clearly over staffed with far to many overpaid managers who couldn’t manage to run a bath, it’s typical of a public sector organisation in which it’s run by incompetent overpaid kids who have zero experience in management but they have a fancy degree which means they should be paid far too much money while the frontline staff are underpaid so that the overpaid incompetent managers can get paid far more than they deserve. Then you have the 100’s of millions that is wasted by the incompetent managers and executives, literally money that would be better spent if they piled it all up in a car park and burnt it, money that could be far more appropriately spent if it wasn’t run by so many incompetent executives and managers who haven’t got a clue what they are do. It’s criminal how poorly the money is used in some cases but it systemic within the public sector. I worked in the public sector, NHS, education for over 30 years and I saw it all and it has got worse and worse over time and I had to leave the public sector altogether, it made me angry as a tax payer to see how my money was being pissed up against the wall and how needless it was, 100’s of millions wasted unnecessarily, I know I could have saved 2 million a year on my own in one local public sector establishment, but they weren’t interested, I guarantee I could go into all the public sector establishments throughout the UK and do the same very easy, simple change and save 100s of millions of taxpayers money and that’s just me on one very specific area, I guarantee there will be other specific areas that could do they same which are not within my field of expertise. The only thing that can save the NHS is a complete overhaul, it’s not fit for purpose, the longer it’s left to get worse and worse, the more difficult it is going to be to fix it. Throwing more money at it only ever results in more money being wasted, money that has zero impact and could easily be spent elsewhere. The NHS is an absolute disgrace

Also the longest serving actor [in the world] is also in "Corrie" as we Brits call it, that is Bill Roach who to this day plays Ken Barlow. I grew up in Canterbury. Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, had a relative who lived in one of the villages just outside the town, so things like the number of the bus to London would be familiar to him. He was also acquainted with a gentleman who had been a racing driver in the 1920s. His racing car was nicknamed Chitty Bang Bang because of the noises the engine made. Fleming used it as the basis for a children's story he wrote, which he called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. You may know the movie based on the story. As for the 6500 BC thing, there are days when I feel that old myself 😄😄

@@EaterOfBaconSandwiches The population in increased during the Clearences? The land was cleared of people, at the end of the usual genocidal interference? The population of the Highlands before Brit designed political practices stood at 80%! By the end of enforcement. It was reduced to just 8%! As for Clan cheifs/Laird's behaviour? The British offered what can be politely termed as inducements? More like toe the line, or else. Your lands, deeds will be forfeit. Population increased? 🤡 Unlike some? I don't require Wikipedia. @@countycricklewood Yes clearances, no planned genocide. Pretty much everything was motivated by the financial gain of the land owning classes. The clearances were because wool from sheep was more profitable the tenant farmers. Nobody designed the potato blight that hit the whole of Europe. It hit Ireland worse because a large increase in population was sustained by tenants on land too infertile to grow anything else. It was badly managed, but by the same system of social care that existed in the rest of the Kingdom.
@claregallagher8550
@claregallagher8550 Жыл бұрын
@@EaterOfBaconSandwiches It depends on which history books you read. If you read some history books written by independent sources, it tells a very different story to those written from a UK establishment perspective. History is subjective to those who write it, which also can be influenced by the author's background and culture and sometimes by who is commissioning them to write it. You can take a literal fact like you have stated of 'the highland clearances were perpetrated by Scottish Lairds', however there is a much bigger picture than that, which is about the loyalty of those Lairds to the English crown and the financial and influential incentive given to them to undertake this act. That doesn't mean that just because they were the actual people who threw out the highlanders, that the English crown had no part. In fact it had a major part in this and the Act of Union, providing financial incentives and promises of wealth and position to the Scottish land owners in payment for their loyalty. History is also taught according to the establishment's perspective along with set curriculum. I learned a UK glossy history version at school and had to do my own research to find the other perspectives with additional contextual information written by people who were not restricted by establishment biase. In fact the quote “History is Written by Victors.”, which gets attributed to Winston Churchill, but its origins are unknown, implies that history is not grounded in facts, rather it's the winners' interpretation of them that prevails. It is a well understood concept that the victors can force their narrative down on the people. You only have to look at the newspapers in the UK to see who is majorly influencing the public, for example if you read the English version of the Daily Mail, it has a very different spin on the front page than the Scottish Daily Mail (not that I would every read this paper!!). This is not just because there is different focus or news, it is deliberate to influence public to the agenda of the media moguls. In the UK, we only really have 3 or 4 who own most of the media and they are all wealthy Tory donors and influencers also. The point I am trying to make is that it is not simply a case of someone reading a history book as you said, they may well have done, but it was not the same one you gave them another perspective. Your history book and understanding forms your opinion, but doesn't necessarily make you totally right, just because you got one fact in the whole context correct!
