As a Berliner myself i have to salute to the prestine quality of the video presented; altgough it didn't touch many nameable topics such as the signiture laid back attiude, that anables everyone to be themselves, extensive grenery, cosmopolitan food culture, night life & sub culture.... The idea of seeing you two exploring that city seems indeed entertaining. Take care.

Berlin is one of my favourite European cities. So much history, character, and diversity. The last time I was there, I did a street art walking tour, an incredible experience offering a chance to see parts of the city only locals know. Fascinating. We're lucky that it's less than a two hour flight from London!

its still very poor with a lot dirty and ugly places and can not life without money from the rich staats like bavaria, Hamburg, Hessen, Baden Würtenberg. Outside Berlin is much nicer was many times there build the Station Gesundbrunnen, Apartments in Schönefeld, and a Building near the Allee der Kosmonauten. Was in the late 70th in Strausberg(East from Berlin) for a cure and visit my Mums best Friends Family in Stansdorf and Klein Machnow(both east from Potsdam and south from Berlin) many Times.

I was born and grew up in West Germany. In 1987 we went on a one-week school trip to East Germany. It was a mixed experience, we met super nice people, saw the run down cities, black with smoke and stinking from the exhaust of the two stroke Trabis (their brand of car) and the lignite used to heat the houses. We experienced the scarcity as we ate in a privately run restaurant and the amazing owner family cooked the best they could with the groceries they got hold of. In Dresden, we had a very nice "cityscape explainer" (the word “Führer” was taboo in the GDR, even in the word Stadt-Führer, city guide). A young Stasi officer, a member of the secret police, accompanied us at every turn and restricted our contact with the locals, after all we were the class enemy. But by the end of our stay, he was literally crying because we had made friends with him. Oh, and we were in “Berlin, capital of the GDR”, as it was then called, on the eve of May Day and were woken up in the middle of the night by Russian tanks rehearsing the parade for the next day. For a moment we thought the Russians were going to invade. In 1988 I was in Rome and met a nice lady in the Capitoline Museums who told me she was from the GDR. I asked her how she could travel to Rome. She was only allowed to visit her relatives in West Germany, but took the opportunity to go to Rome. She was the wife of the pastor of St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig, who in 1989 would become the initiator of the famous Monday demonstrations that ultimately led to the fall of the Wall. In the summer of 1989, a friend and I went back to the GDR to meet our respective pen pals and spend a few days traveling through the GDR with them. The father of one of them was a janitor at a school and had an apartment in the school building. We were invited to lunch, and they told us that secret police had ordered them to bring us straight to their apartment and not to let us interact with the pupils - but it was a Sunday anyway. Two months before the Wall came down, we didn't notice _anything_ that would give us an inkling of the events to come. All in all, we didn't feel uncomfortable as tourists in the GDR, there was no feeling of being in an authoritarian country, it was only when we crossed the border again and took our first pee break at a West German freeway service station that we felt relieved and realized that some trepidation was falling away from us.

If you come to Berlin, tell me and I show you around. I m a city planer, born and life in Berlin with family Berlin background since the 1850th. So I knew quit a lot of the city. Berlin has around 170 museums and the near town of Potsdam alone has 16 palaces. Best time to visit is may / june and a 5 day visit is a minimum. Check out other youtube videos about the city like "is berlin the coolest city in Europa?" I think this video scratches the surface of what Berlin is. It shows some very obvious attractions. But Berlin has so much more, especially regarding culture, food, nature, diversity among all its different districts etc. It is an amazing place to visit. I've been in Berlin in the fall of 1980, with school. Back then you could choose, London, Paris or Berlin. I chose Berlin as I thought I would go to London and Paris anyway. I know turns out I've worked in those two cities. Of course the wall was still up in 1980. They had planned a day in East Berlin for us and we went through Checkpoint Charlie. But first, after we left the Netherlands by bus we had to go from West Germny into East Germany. That meant no more smoking from half an hour from the border. Tobacco smell could make them refuse you entrance. You can imagine with a bunch of 17 year olds, a lot of beer was consumed but we also went to interesting places. I remember the Natural History Museum in Dahlem. Anyway, I am sure you girls will have a blast of a time there.

5:40 The reason for Berlin having so much bridges and canals is also the reason for its name: In the Polabian language Berlin means "village in the swamp"; the west Slavic Polabians were the first settlers here. The small German trade town Kölln, situated at an island in river Spree, was mentioned for the first time in 1237, while the Slavic town of Berlin was situated on the eastern bank of the Spree; in 1307 those both towns built a joint town hall. 17:10 Caught him at a historical error. Prussia was never part of Holy Roman Empire. It was at first the state of the Deutscher Orden (mistranslated to Teutonic Order) which was within Poland but always trying to become independent; 1525 to 1657 it was a Protestant Duchy in Catholic Poland; in 1657 it became independent after Poland lost the Second Nordic War (which was the second Swedish-Polish war after that of 1600-1629), and in 1701 it became its own kingdom. The Duchy of Prussia was however inherited in 1618 by House Brandenburg-Hohenzollern, which became thereby a subject of the King of Poland as well as of the German-Roman Emperor. 34:15 The Nazis blamed a Dutch communist for the fire who was allegedly found wandering through the building at the evening after the fire was discovered. They used the incident for a campaign to persecute (and lock up in concentration camps) all communists and other far-left politicians, and also to further diminish the power of the parliament, which then hold its meetings in an opera house next to the Reichstag building - but only 19 times during the 12 years between 1933 and 1945 (the last time in 1942). (Hitler convinced President Hindenburg after the fire to sign a decree "for the Protection of People and State" which effectively cancelled most civil rights and suspended many parts of the constitution.) There were always rumors of the Nazis themselves organizing the incident, but no evidence was found so far. 35:14 part of the new buildings of the Bundestag (mostly containing meeting rooms and offices for the delegates).

Well I have to say I was totally impressed with Berlin - I have never been and now I need to go like right now. Beautiful on my bucket list from this moment. I have to say at the beginning the history of the wall was fascinating as much as I knew the reasons for its erection it brought home the devastation and loss of lives. I thought of my own city of Belfast and its walls - sadly they still stand to separate our communities. I really would love you to take a look at Belfast - it is now an amazing city but the recent history is fascinating. Thanks for the video girls - brilliant - bit late for work lol your fault!!

My understanding from what I've read and been told is that under Gorbachev's glasnost policy he had increased the freedom of the Soviets and East Germans to express their political views and demand more freedom. Gorbachev didn't order the removal of the wall at the request of Reagan. It was done by the German people themselves and he basically allowed it to happen because he felt it was inevitable anyway. At that time East Germany was in a terrible state of decay and the USSR was very much weakened and didn't interfere. Thinking Reagan's demand resulted in the collapse of the wall apparently is a myth.

On a visit to Berlin in the 1990's our tour guide told us a joke about the East Geman secret service. He said many of Berlin's taxi drivers are former Stasi operatives. This is a good thing because all you have to do is give the driver your name and he already knows where you live.

I was in Berlin 50yrs ago as an 18 yr old , the place blew me away . The wall was very intimidating and I did feel threatened on the observation platforms looking over the wall We did a day trip to East Berlin via train and where given strict instructions NOT to try and converse with any members of the public as we would be watched and followed as we where a group , and they where not joking , men in long trench coats and fedora hats where making sure we knew they where there They best way I could describe East Berlin was a City and its people that had had their souls sucked out of them , the Russians had made no attempt to repair or hide the damage that had been done as a reminder to the West Berlin was a City within a wall that would be better described as a country , it had the city centre , forest parks a lake with imported sand from Africa to make a beach and seaside and then it had its tower block suburbs where a lot of Turkish immigrants lived that did a lot of the jobs the Berliners didn’t want to do The night life was bonkers we went into clubs about 10pm and came out about 6am , you where only allowed to sit if you where buying drinks , a lot of locals had massive glass boots with about 2ltrs of larger in them which they would walk around with grabbing seats at tables when they could I found the West Berliners great especially as a Brit in the American sector as they where not to keen on the Americans , but we found we where not so popular as a Brit in the British sector and was told it’s was down to the way the locals perceived their policing / guarding I suppose Anyway great video and as people have said he only scratched the surface 👍👍👌👌

16:25 Yepp, I've been around. I'm a year older than Debbie but not as well preserved. 😉😘 Yes, the west side of the wall was constantly being sprayed by graffiti artists even before the wall fell. In 1986 we took a school excursion with our International School from West Germany to Berlin for a week. We went through Checkpoint Charlie as a an entire class. But on the way back an American with Chinese ancestry was held up at the border because the guards on the East side didn't believe he was really an American but rather a family member of a defector trying to be snuck across the border into the west. So a teacher stayed with him at the border check point, while the American consulate sent out a secretary with papers confirming that this teenager really was American. They detained the teacher and the student for six hours while the papers were checked and rechecked, until both the teacher and the student were released. The harrassment was real in those days. So we saw both sides of the wall, or rather, we saw the western side close up, and the inner wall which separated the death strip from the actual western wall. Even the inner eastern wall was pristine as no East German would have dared to spray anything on it, for fear of repercussions. No one back then would have believed that a mere three years later this monumental scar on the face of freedom would become history. Edit 1: The destroyed old Berliner Schloß / Berlin Palace as it was stated in the video had been heavily damaged during the war. The East German socialist government frowned upon any reminders of the old rulers, so anything too damaged to renovate for cheap was demolished. However in this case against the very firm resistance of most Berliners. In 1950 it was demolished by explosive measures to make space for military parades. The Palast der Republik / the Palace of the Republic was a brutalist building of modernity constructed from 1973 to 1978. In spite of knowing of the detrimental effects of asbestos a spray concrete with asbestos mixed in was used during the construction to provide the necessary fire resistance. The huge glass front and the large number of lamps gave it several funny but less charming nicknames among the populace: Palazzo Prozzi, with protzen being to show off (with little style), so Palazzo Prozzi was a show-off palace. Erich's Lampenladen, or simply Lampenladen Mitte, Erich's Lamp store, or Lampstore Central showcased it as Erich Honeker's store. Honeker was the SED socialist leader of East Germany for a long time until its final days. Due to the disgust many people felt about the destruction of the old Palace, the official name Palast der Republik was changed to Balast der Republik, or from palace of the republic to balast of the republic. It was hideously overpriced, with official statements starting at 400 million Marks, going up to a finished final of 800 million Marks. Back in the day the average income was around 1500 Marks monthly among the east German populace. With the East German economy lagging seriously behind the west, throwing around nearly a billion Marks for a vanity project was seen as a huge waste. Edit 2: the cause of the Reichstagsfire is hotly debated (pun fully intended) to this day. Some say it actually was set ONLY by the communist Marinus von der Lubbe it was ascribed to by the Nazis. Others debate whether the Nazis participated in the arson to have reasonable cause for their enabling laws which set the stage for their seizing of power. Remember, this was only a week before the election date for the flash election called out by von Hindenburg barely three months earlier, after the current parties could not decide on a majority coalition among the roughly NSDAP and DNVP vs the SPD and the communists, with only far smaller parties remaining. The government had been in limbo during a time of crisis. This was barely five years after the Black Friday and the economic crash of the Wallstreet Bust. No matter the cause of the fire, the Nazis definitely milked it for all it was worth to sway the public to their side. The outcomes were the most devastating 12 years in the entirety of German and world history.

Berlin is 344 square miles compared to London 607 square miles, I wanr for a week once in 2011, UTTRLY LOVED IT !! , cool train systems so easy to get around, the Berliners are sooooo friendly, all speak English tho German is easy to learn some useful phrases to be polite, and ladies they drive on the right so you can hire a car happily

That was incredible! as a Brit one of the things that strikes me is just how clean it (and lets face it most of Europe) is, it makes me a little ashamed.

The Reichstag fire is a completely different thing to the night of broken glass. The Reichstag fire took place on 27th February 1933 and was in the early stages of the rise of the Nazi party. The Night of Broken Glass, otherwise known as Kristallnacht in German, took place on the night of 9th Novermber 1938. Another incident, The night of Long Knives, took place on the 2nd July 1934, when a lot high ranking opponents to the Nazi party were murdered overnight. These are separate incidents as the Nazi party slowly took control of Germany in the lead up to the start of WW2.

Hi there best wishes from Berlin to Ohio. I grew up in West Germany and settled over to West Berlin in 1984. In that times the wall was still up. I was there when the wall came down. And I am still there. Berlin is some kind of crazy but - in my opinion - the only place to live in all Germany. I would love to see you guys in Berlin. Take care

Good Morning Girls I am slightly older than Debbie (Yes, Natasha, ancient people do exist 😂) so I remember Reagan's "tear down this wall" speech and David Hasselhoff doing his song. The Reichstag fire was indeed the excuse used by the Nazi's to justify the cancellation of basic freedoms after they blamed it on a young Dutch Communist. I don't think it's ever been proved beyond doubt that the Nazi's did it, but who had most to gain? It triggered "Kristalnacht" or "Night of Broken Glass" when Nazi thugs smashed the windows of Jewish owned businesses and looted the contents, with the Police ordered to do nothing. Synagogues were looted and set in fire, the Fire brigade also ordered to do nothing. Many Jewish people were beaten up or murdered, and the rest sent to Concentration Camps. The businesses and homes were taken over by people with friends in the Nazi Party.

There is a lot to see in Berlin. I have been there twice and the only thing I duplicated in my second visit from my first was I spent a day in the Technical Museum. Warning, Hotels are expensive.

My dad was one of the construction workers who worked on the TV tower. You couldn't just ask for a job there either, the company you worked for chose construction workers and engineers and put them there. Men from all over the GDR worked on the construction of the TV tower.

Nice reaction to that video and the sites of Berlin. Concerning your question who burned down the Reichstag: It was a dutch young man who intended to protest against the Nazis by using the rather radical approach of arson. The Nazis spoke of him as a communist which would support their own reasoning to persecute communists and socialists. The event that you might remember of the Nazis burning something in Germany was the Kristallnacht (night of broken glass). In the night from the 8th to the 9th of November 1938 centrally organized violence against jews, their shops, churches and institutions started throughout Germany. More than 1400 synagogues and 7500 businesses were destroyed and approximately 400 people died. Earlier in 1933 the Nazis had organized public fires where they would burn books that were not in line with their ideals.

If you want to know, why King Friedrich I was not allowed to visit the summer palace when he wanted, here is the reason. He mostly loved his military and he was a bad fahther who mistreated his son Friedrich II a lot to make a "strong" and masculine man out of him. But he came after his mother and loved arts, architecture and poetry. Its even very likely he was gay and in love with his best friend when he was young. So when he had enough and tried to run away with his best friend/lover, they got caught and his father made him watch the execution of his own friend. Ironicly Friedrich II would become a powerfull king and turn Prussia into one of the two most powerfull kingdomes inside the holy roman empire. He would become much more famouse than his father and would earn the title Friedrich the great. By the way, looking into the history of Friedrich II is fascinating he was an interesting guy and changed a lot of things, including making Berlin a mayor city by doubling its size and population. He was also a main reason for the introdution of potatos, public schools and religious freedom.

Great video! I am from Europe and I must say that Mr. ANTON FRITZ is a great inspiration for me. I started investing in crypto with him, as a scared investor who did not want to lose money. I am very happy to say that I am now very profitable and buying my first house with crypto. I am very grateful for all the knowledge and information Mr. Jerry has given me in the last months. I started in January 2024 with only $10,000 and today my portfolio is worth $337,000...

Berlin is a fantastic city, but like many cities around the world, some of it's character is being lost to gentrification (the new airport hardly adds to the experience) - however it's still brilliant and one of my favourite places in the world

14:30 He mentions spy novels ... but fails to mention the "Glienicker Brücke", which is in the southwest of West Berlin on the road to Potsdam, which is where all the exchanges of prisoners / spies happened. Checkpoint Charlie is overrated IMO, because it is a tiny checkpoint in a narrow street.

Natasha, I think you may have conflated the Reichstag fire with Kristallnacht. The latter was the overnight destruction of many Jewish businesses and occured 5 years after the Reichstag fire. Spent a week there in the autumn last year. Small hint: the hotels are quite expensive if you accidentally end up there during the weekend of the Berlin marathon.

Berliner here: Berlin should NOT be the first place you visit when you’re in Germany because it’s absolutely not representative for the country. And it definitely has its downsides which I’m not gonna discuss here… it was still a great video although he forgot to mention the most beautiful place in Berlin… besides, you won’t see any locals in the places he has shown. We’re mostly in our own neighbourhoods and that’s where you’ll find the REAL Berlin and not the touristy version. Look for videos about Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain or Kreuzberg
