In the hit U.K. comedy show ‘Blackadder Goes Forth’, our hero is captured by the German WW1 flying ace Manfred Avon Richthofen (the famous Red Baron). The baron makes an observation about the British (well, the English - but I think it’s probably true of Britain as a whole!), which I think is very fair and accurate. “How lucky you English are to find the toilet so amusing. For us it is a mundane and functional item. For you it is the basis of an entire culture!”

And fortunately not being part of the national museums they charge for admission rather than having boxes all over the place inviting you to leave a donation which could so easily go wrong. What would be frustrating would be if you realised during your visit that you needed to go as it doesn't look like among all those bogs is actually one you can use.

Ladies. The reason for the closure of the Post Office in Sandown, as with many other shops/facilities around the country, is the switch to on line shopping, banking, online communication, E mail etc, reducing the use of such places. There is less in town shopping etc leading to the closure of cafes, restaurants, which in turn leads to fewer people going into town to use these, creating a cycle of decline. Sandown is a very small town on the Isle of Wight, very dependent on seasonal tourism to make a living, along with the rest of the island. Even on the mainland things like Post Offices have closed, or are closing, all over the place, or moving to smaller premisses, even in the City of York this has happened. In many cases Post Office counters have moved into share other shops, like supermarkets, bookshops & the like. Some banks have also done this as their services are done more on line, & cash is much less used. This means many of the large, substantial buildings, fancy banks & Post Offices, are being left empty on high streets all around the country. Some are available for conversion to other uses, but many may not be suitable, or too expensive, to convert into housing etc. This all means that the centre of some towns are beginning to look neglected.

I have been going over to the IOW for over 40 years and in those years the popular places like Sandown and Shanklin have deteriorated slowly in those years. I will say that back in the 90's were the best times for me, when I was in my teenage and early 20's, but in the last 15 years the coastal areas has gone down hill. I only go over there now to take my Kayak in the sea for a bit of fishing, which is the only recreational thing I do over there. My mum and dad retired over there back in 2004 and with the passing of my dad in Feb 2022, my mum still lives there, which I visit still every year when I do my kayaking. It would be nice if the council or the government would put their hands in their pocket to restore this island and bring it up to the 21st century. Now the Island just looks like something from a distant past.

Sandown (and other Isle of Wight places) was a tourist place. I was born in Southampton in 1953, as a kid the Isle of Wight was a day trip away. Families would go the the IoW for their summer holidays. Then as people travelled more people started going abroad. Now, with cheap flights, it's probably cheaper to go to Spain or Portugal than to travel to the IoW and the weather is more predictable. I suspect the pandemic may have been the final nail that killed off the tourism that funded places like Sandown. The last time I visited the IoW was probably 2010 when I went with a friend who wanted to do meet in person someone she met on-line that lived in Ryde but didn't want to go alone. As it turned out she and Carole hit it off well, (both arty types) but honestly, for me, it was like stepping back in time to the 1950s/60s. I'm pretty sure it would have been the same at Sandown. Please, anyone still living on the IoW, please comment and let me know how it's like there. I've lived in London for the last 50 years and it's nearly 40 years since I even visited Southampton.
@Alaero-v5gАй бұрын
I was born here then left to join the forces but came back in 1984…..still here and I love it. Loads to do if you like the outdoor life and are prepared to socialise. The winter is a bit quiet but you need it to get over the rest of the year! There are plenty of deadheads that knock the Island but loads of artists and creative people live here as well as plenty of sports orientated folks. It does get a bit claustrophobic at times but anywhere can do that to people.
@terryloveukАй бұрын
@@Alaero-v5g Carole, the woman we came to visit, has moved to Brighton (still has loads of arty types) and in so many ways reminds me a bit where she lived in Ryde, but a bit more up to date. The IoW would still be a great place for a family holiday it seems for those that don't want to hassle of the cheap flights airlines with younger kids and don't want the sometimes excessive heat. I hope there can keep going and retain it's character.

@@terryloveuk My sister lives on the island so we are regulars there too. It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s like it’s stuck in a time warp as it’s how I remember the mainland (50 years ago) where I live. I get the hovercraft over and back so the flight is a mere 10 minutes. It’s called a flight as the hovercraft isn’t on the water and it’s a terrific way to get there. Go back there. I’ve lived in London and I know how stressful that can be. The air over there is clean and fresh and there’s something new to see every day. 😊

@@Whippy99 I've never been on a hovercraft (I remember when the SRN-1 first appeared), when we visited Ryde we got the ferry from Portsmouth after the train from London. I used to joke that the IoW was like visiting the 1950s (actually it was more like 1970s). That's not a bad thing, I liked the 1950s/1970s - I remember enjoying those years. Before our trip to Ryde was when I accompanied my mother on her works day trip, (she worked at the Ordnance Survey) in Southampton, to the IoW and had a coach trip around the island, (somewhere in the 1970s when I was in my 20s and the coach was mostly "old folks" in there 40s and 50s - and now I'm in my 70s). I'm glad you still enjoy visiting the island, and that it has retained it's character and I hope Sandown can recover from all the closures without losing that character.

As an archaeologist we look this matter as it tell us a lot about life style. Fun fact: if you want to know how long it takes to digest a particular food stuff, eat some sweet corn without chewing as the cellulose coating of the corn cannot be digested (the starch is digested) , so it comes through as a marker.

As other commentators have said it's like a lot of other seaside towns, but the council are not helping themselves. Until they decide to do something with Sandown instead of wasting money on outdoor Sea Pools at the Yaverland end, then it's going to get worse. Interesting fact: in the US : your toilets have the water filled up to near bottom height right? In the UK we are different in that the water is maybe 4 - 6 in deep but when you pull the flush the water is directed in a swirling motion so the solids are sucked away! In Germany their toilets have a shelf so when you poo you can examine your poo for worms!!! This is no joke. When you’ve finished the examination and you pull the flush the poo is washed off the porcelain very efficiently. I think the reason for this is that Europeans have been known to use the poo to fertilise the local fields. (Actually I’m not sure this is the actual reason but it sounds reasonable) I was in the forces in Germany and lived with their toilets for years. You can ask any forces mates in the US because they will have been there at some time! Cheers girls!

Little hands point, eyes open wide, Giggling at facts they never thought to find. A fossilized treasure, a turd so old, Each piece a story begging to be told. From dinosaur dung to a kitten's clump, Science and humor, in every lump. A place full of wonder, with quirky delight, Where laughter and learning unite, taking flight. As others have said many of our seaside towns are not As they should be, because it's cheaper to go abroad, but the Isle of Wight gets a double whammy because the ferry to get there is very, very expensive if you want to take a car, and the state of our economy at the moment doesn't help!

Had I heard of this- Yes! Have I visited it - No! Do I need to go now-No! We holiday on the Isle of Wight every year, and often go to Sandown, but choose the Animal Sancutary (they have multiple lions and tigers) the Dinosaur Isle (It's a dinosaur themed museum and visitors' centre) and a couple of favourite restaurants, plus a walk for miles along the beach, over the Poo Museum. Sadly Sandown, which was once a flourishing seaside resort is very run down in places theses days. Basically, those things which are along The Front (the beach) are still doing OK, but the High Stree, which is one block back from the seafront is where all those empty units are.....Other towns on the Island have fared much better than Sandown for some reason....

The Isle of Wight as a whole is a very beautiful place but unfortunately a couple of places like Sandown have fallen foul of online shopping and greedy landlords putting their rents too high. Buildings have fallen into disrepair and hotels have closed therefore no-one really visits anymore. However, the pier is a fun destination and it has an expansive safe beach for families to enjoy. Many islanders go sea swimming here. I've lived on the island for 25 years and it has changed beyond recognition. It's such a shame because location wise it has a lot going for it. It's about time the local council took action

Sanddown isn’t that bad. Other parts of the isle are more run down eg Rhyde and even along the south coast - eg hastings, Portland. But many UK coastal towns are fairly deprived due to so much mass tourism moving to the Mediterranean since the late 1970s. In short, when prices fell for holidaying abroad many people preferred the guaranteed sun. We still holiday in the UK though. The exceptions are either larger cities like Brighton or Bournemouth near London or pretty small places like scenic Cornish or Norfolk fishing villages.

Wight trash is a skate board shop on the Island and as that’s a skate board I would suggest they made that one. The Island has some beautiful spots and history as well, from queen Victoria’s holiday home to the castle where King Charles was held before execution and beautiful countryside and beaches. And the location to Britain’s secret rocket testing It’s been referred to as the jewel of the South. Fantastic video, really enjoyed this one as live here and never been.

Alum Bay has a unique sandstone formation, shifted to vertical strata over the sands of time. Everyone who visits the IOW often comes back with one of the multi coloured sand souvenirs.

It's quiet expensive to live on the island because they have to get most things across the water. The beach is ok. There's some nice places to visit though. Xx
