Look Stan may have done terrible things. But they were some moments that proved that he was better than his dead beat dad. One times when he electrocuted himself and later Francine and died. He made a deal with the devil to bring him and Francine back home that when he dies in the future he will be sent to hell while Francine goes to heaven. He threatened God at gun point for a second chance to live in order to save his family from freezing to death in their car. Stopped Steve from having surgery which could ruin his body in order to be taller.

Continuity in American Dad is pretty impressive, especially considering the time gap between episodes, and the amount of randomness in between. Because it is proven true some seasons later that Stan was the reason Jack had to leave. Another one is the question of Haley's father. Too bad they kinda threw that out in recent seasons, where Jack was inexplicably human again before dying, and Greg's daughter Libby is now a baby again.

Honestly one of the things I love about american dad compared to family guy is that while stan is still a bad father, he at least has reasons behind how he behaves as opposed to peter just being horrible to his family. Most of the time we see this is with steve, stan sees a lot of his younger self in steve and wants steve to be better so he doesn't have to go through the same things. This normally results in stan going too far in trying to get steve to "toughen up". Stan while still doing a shit job at it, actually does still love and try to do better for his family but typically fails because of his stupidity or being narrow-minded.
