I am a Malaysian living in the UK and what you said are spot on! Safety and Education are definitely the two top issues that is making me want to return home T.T. Malaysia has it's issues too but it's definitely liveable if you are in the middle - high income bracket. I will probably return home after 5 - 6 years but for now, I will continue grinding, saving and investing whatever I earn in the UK aggressively, so I have a strong financial foundation when I eventually come back! Best scenario is to earn in Pounds and spend in MYR.

I lived in the UK for a short while and I am currently back to Malaysia. I definitely felt unsafe in the UK. Our parcels and bank cards got stolen many times and police won't even look into the cases. There are also many unhinged people trying to bother you when you walk outside. Rents are increasing every few months etc.. 😂 Back to Malaysia, I am feeling so safe to walk outside (not at nights) although the weather is hot but definitely can cope😅 put aside politics, I truly think this country is highly habitable..

I’m a Malaysian. I used to stay in LA, California for more than a decade in the 80’s but decided to come back to my home country when I planned to start a family. It is exactly the same reasons by you given.. US is not a good country to raise up a family if one sill want to maintain the Asian values.

What do Asian values yield?

But Malaysia has its own set of problems too, for e.g. the political unstability which resulted in many issues such as depreciation of ccy; and also other thing like ethicity biasness, so in the end most parents whom can afford will send children to international schools/uni which if in the US, education is still good and free. Also, when the kids gets older, do you want the kids to earn just few k RINGGIT in msia? If you then want the kid to work elsewhere like US/UK so its better earning for them, you then run into another issue which is separation issue where you will live far away from your children. So i think every where or every situation has pros and cons bah... ;)

Western society values emphasize more on individualism and independence, often prioritizing personal goals. Whereas, Asian society, on the other hand, emphasizes community, family, and respect for traditions. I have experienced both sides of the world, personally I chose to come back that proven it was a just decision that I made in 1995. My decision is good for me but it may not suit to others. Therefore, we have to ask ourself what we want based on many aspects. “The grass is always greener on the other side”.
I live in Switzerland so we faced most of those issues you have mentioned in western countries including drugs, lbgt, high medical and insurance cost. The only problem we don't have is probably safety. But there is one more thing which is terrible in Switzerland - the status of women. The system in Switzerland is so conservative that it is still deploying policies that aim to emprison women at home after child birth. They still believe the role of women remains in kitchen and child care. So much so that canteen is usually not a part of the primary school. It is not frequent that we think about the importance of a canteen or a place to eat for the children. Once this premise is not available in the school, it will automatically mean that the children MUST GO HOME for lunch. And who do you reckon will be at home waiting for the kids?

Well said! I have a friend who relocated from UK to Switzerland for a higher paying job. She complained to me about the same issue.

What you shared are true. No doubt many still rushing to go to live in USA, because USA has always been portray as the greatest country in the world for decades. But those who lives there , many wanted to leave as well because USA changed a lot, not like 20-30 years ago anymore especially decline in safety and high living cost. So they are looking for better quality of life outside of USA (such as in SEA regions)

very good info to compare life in msia vs US/EU . Welcome u invite more friends or relatives come to msia to enjoy the simple life here
I experienced the tip issue too when I was living in America. The small town I lived in commonly required 10% tip So, the first time I visited Chicago, I left 10% tip on the table before leaving. When I almost reached the exit, the waitress shouted at me rudely that I didn't give enough tip. Oh.....that's how I learned that the minimum tip is 15% in the city.
Elite is only 5% of US population. Average people in USA are not doing well. Yes, USA is a good place for the elites. So are you one of the elites in USA?
Agreed. It all depends which part of US you live, what profession you in, how adaptable you are. SF Bay area is now my primary home and Malaysia my second home (where I grew up). Every place has pro and con. You stay where you feel comfortable !
