Hello, dear teacher Rachel. Greetings from Colombia. You've helped me improve my speaking through your valuable videos and inspired me to become an English teacher someday. I'd like you to make a video about how to pronounce words with the combination 'bv' as in: obvious and obverse; and how to link those consonants when one of them is at the end of a word and the other at the beginning of an adjacent one.

I'm so happy to find your channel. I really want to have a nice accent. I'm an Afghan girl and have a Persian accent. In my native language, we don't have all these stress and tongue movements. I guess, Persian is a very relaxed languege and doesn't need a lot of effort to make its sounds. But English is totally different. So I really want to accept this challenge and have an advanced accent in English. Your lessons are just the very things I was searching for. I can't thank you enough ❤

Hi! It sounds like you can make two adjustments: - Don't lift the tongue quite so high - Make sure you lift the middle of the tongue, not the back of the tongue. The part of the tongue that lifts for the [æ] vowel is a little further back on the tongue than the part of the tongue that should lift for the [ε] vowel.

Some online dictionaries like Cambrigde Oxford Learners ,Merriam Webster, Collins dictionaries, etc. use a different symbol to represent this vowel sound. They use the symbol /e/. The problem is that in the IPA vowel quadrilateral the symbol /e/ represents another vowel sound the existis in other languages, like italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and many others. In the IPA vowel quadrilateral the vowels /ɪ/ and /e/ are very close, so they sound quite similar. However for the /e/ the mouth is more open than for /ɪ/. Some teachers told me that the /e/ vowel exists in English, but not as a monophthong, pure vowel or single vowel ( these three terms all mean the same thing). In English the /e/ vowel exists but it is part of a diphthong /eɪ/ like in the words Able, cAke, bAIt, or plAY, for exemple. So /e/ and /ɛ/ are different symbols that represent two different vowel sounds in the IPA

@eswaravinash72 Жыл бұрын
Hi Rachel, I appreciate your videos. They have helped me a lot to improve my pronunciation and accent. I have a question about the letter 'e' in English. Sometimes it has different sounds in different words, like: bed (/bed/), response (/rɪˈspɑːns/), presentation ( /ˌprezənˈteɪʃən/), extraneous (/ɪkˈstreɪniəs/). How can I know whether to use the /ɪ/ vowel or the /e/ vowel? Is there any rule or pattern for this? Thank you for your explanation.
@rachelsenglish Жыл бұрын
Good question! E does certainly have a lot of possible pronunciations in English (EE, IH, schwa, EH, and more). My recommendation is to study words that have similar patterns, because they will start to give you clues as to what other words spelled similarly may sound like. For example, "bed" has the same spelling as other one-syllable words red, Ted, led, and fed. These all have the same EH pronunciation. The problem with rules in English spelling is that we break them so much of the time. One tip with E that is most often true is that if it is unstressed, it often becomes the schwa or IH sound (such as in your example, "response"). But the surest way to know how an E will be pronounced is to look it up in a dictionary, or hear a native speaker say it. More here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpLXmaKfmb1_j5o

Hey Rachel, you could make a video showing how to pronounce the words the way we hear them at English series too. Like the word gonna that sometimes we hear as I'm ona(or something like that. I heard it in the Lost series ). Cause sometimes we can't even discern what we are hearing because it does't match with the subtitles, and you could tell us how to pronounce them by,for example, writing how they sound. This would be really helpful. I gonna give you some examples of the phrases I wasn't able to understand even with the subtitles: Lost 12 at 09:57 I don't understand the phrase he said Lost 12 at 23:39 (I can't hear 'hasn't been able') Lost 04 at 22:26 I´m gonna get that boar(The way he pronounces gonna, it sound like I'm 'a' get that boar) lost 5 at 10:12 what should we do with what we got(It seems they are dropping 'ld' of should and connecting the u in should with the i sound, to form 'what should we do', something like: whashouido ) Lost 6 at 22:50(I can't hear the 'you still haven't' and the 'd' of convinced.) Lost 9 at 2:44 (I can't hear the 'can' that is in the subtitles) lost 12 at 06:24(I can't undertand the 'you wouldn't happen to have'.) Lost 12 at 02:53(I can't hear the after. How he is saying it.) I think the first two phrases were the most difficult for me.
