I remember reading long ago, and have yet to hear it confirmed, that the F-22 has thrust vectoring to help it maneuver not in dogfights, but at very high altitudes where the conventional control surfaces can't bite enough air. This is why the F-23 team contended it didn't need thrust vectoring - its enormous full-slab tailerons were big enough to move its ass around even in the very high-altitude atmosphere. The F-22's conventional control surfaces can't.
@arthas6402 жыл бұрын
That makes MUCH more sense since high altitude flight is important while dogfighting simply hasn't been important for a long time. It was rapidly becoming outdated when jets first became common and since stealth technology entered the game it became a secondary concern at best
@dizzyizzie63542 жыл бұрын
That's not quite correct but it's not necessarily wrong. The f22 is said to maneuver extremely well without TVC. It's nose authority on its pitch axis is unparalleled. the twin horizontal tail stabs(stabilizers & elevator ) design use the entire surface to pich and roll. There authority is much greater then expected. More then adequate at very high altitudes While supersonic. However at lower air speeds the ability to pitch is decreased. While at the same time lower altitudes bleed alot of energy off to gain nose position/AOA. So TVC on that axis is essential for low speed maneuvering, and control/recovery- authority in a stall. It also adds to the balance/ stability, and decreased g loading on wings no matter the center of gravity or direction of lift vectors while maneuvering. In HOBS, BFM & BVR engagements, fox2/3 - high alpha fights

According to Paul metz the f22 still couldn't do everything the yf23 could . Nice interview with him as he is the only person to fly both yf22 yf 23 and the final f22 design. Sadly the f23 wasn't chosen as its pretty much what the air force wants in the Gen 6 . 23 had far superior range larger payload bays and better stealth
@tomfuelery29052 жыл бұрын
The main reason the F23 was not chosen was the manufacturer. It had a history of delays and cost over runs at the time and had left a bad taste with the powers that be.
@arvindno1172 жыл бұрын
In addition to what is posted already, the TVC allows the nose down pitching moment at supersonic speeds to be counteracted without using the horizontal stabilizers, which in turn reduces drag at supersonic speeds and allows retention of full pitch authority. Indeed, the early F-14s had glove vanes for this exact reason. However, maintenance of these eventually resulted in them being welded shut on the early planes and deleted in latter new build aircraft.

Something not given enough attention is the F-35's big draw and advantage over any other aircraft; its ability to become a mobile Control and Command center for any aircraft its flying with. The F-35 has the most powerful tracking and radar systems anyone has ever seen on an aircraft. It can provide real-time information to an entire fleet of aircraft while remaining out of sight and undetected, and it can link to, and take control of those aircrafts weapon systems simultaneously and use them as it's own. @texasranger242 жыл бұрын
Sikorsky has the S-97 Raider compete with the Bell+Textron 360 Invictus in the AAS / FARA (armed scout) program. Meanwhile, the Sikorsky+Boeing SB-1 Defiant competes with the Bell+Lockheed V280 Valor for the FVL / FLRAA (long-range lift) program. Given how the US defense industry works, it is likely that both companies get one contract each, to keep every factory running, everybody employed. So if you like both Sikorsky or both Bell designs, get ready for a disappointment. The Raider has troop capacity while the Invictus does not, but that gives the Invictus better stealth properties, just like the Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche had. Not sure why they abandoned that design. Just to push a common scout and transport design when they know it's not very likely they'll get both contracts? The V280 seems to be the more mature design, faster and longer range. But the SB-1 might offer better handling and safety, as it is not a tilt rotor. And it's smaller, closer to the Blackhawk size. This might really go both ways.

I had this argument with the SR71 and how it wasn't a stealth plane. Everyone argues it was intended to be but it never was. They're argument was cross section detection. The real answer to cross section as stealth is that it isn't by itself. It just reduces WHEN you're detectable or identifiable. You still have jamming tech, radar absorbing materials, and mixed with how surfaces reflect the radar radiation. You can't use the cross section alone for stealth.

The F-35's more recent RAM coatings have lowered its RCS to be competitive with the F-22. The earlier figure of an RCS of 0.005m2, was based on pre-production aircraft with previous generations of RAM. The initial production aircraft had an RCS of 0.0015m2, and later RAM formulations have dropped this further. A ceramic RAM formulation is in testing, that should lessen speed restrictions and maintenance costs.
@jefferyzhang18512 жыл бұрын
The stealth tech of F-22 is ancient. There will be whole families of metamaterials that are customized for specific applications. The primary role of the J-20s role would almost certainly be to attack Taiwan and destroy it's air force prior to an invasion. If the US were to directly engage China (which I do not believe it will do other than perhaps 5 battalions of Marines placed on Taiwan to help with the actual defense of the island), the J-20 would be used as an interceptor. The current radars on the Chinese destroyers can easily detect the F35 at great ranges, and while they may not be able to lock on them, they can track and feed that info to the mainland, which can deploy the J-20 on side intercept vectors, where the F-35 is most visible to the J-20 and the J-20 is the least visible to the F-35. It is unlikely that the US will fire on any Chinese warship in the open South China sea because that could easily start a nuclear escalation. With a population of over 1 billion, the Chinese are not really all that concerned about losing 5 million men because they have 115 men for every 100 women.

I am a retired US Air Force electronic warfare officer. One thing in your otherwise good presentation is you seem to repeat the common mistake that radar cross-section is one number. Don’t feel bad, a lot of fighter pilots think this also. Radar cross-section varies with the wavelength of the radar illuminating the target! The classic example is how Serbs shut down an F 117 and damage others after detecting them with the almost World War II vintage P18/Spoonrest VHF radar. It turns out that the longer the wavelength or lower the frequency of a radar, radar absorbent material ceases to effectively absorb radar energy. It is absolutely ridiculous to say an airplane has this RCS unless you also state at what frequency the RCS is measured. This is why the current trend in radars is to have gigantic VHF or UHF antennas, such as the Chinese KLJ-7A. These high-power, long wavelength, radars, or what you need to detect low observable aircraft in time to counter them.

They Detected the F117, but they couldn't localize or track it with the radar that low frequency, they got lucky in that the US had made the same mistake it made in Vietnam. They sent the same plane, the same path, the same day and time, predictably, so they were able to fire a missile blindly that just happened to catch the F117 when it opened its bay doors to fire and use that to zero in. They also had spies watching the aircraft so they knew the f117 had taken off and it wasn't a different aircraft. Not something that would work if your air force was the least bit smart about their operations and randomized things a bit.

The J-20's detection radar combined with the KJ-500's detection radar give them the location of F35's or F22's. At the same time, the F35's detection radar combined with the E-3's detection radar will give them the location of the J-20's. If each nation's flight groups know where the opposing flight group is located, the fighters still need their targeting radars to detect and track the enemy aircraft in order to fire an accurate missile shot. This is where a smaller radar cross section provides a huge advantage. If your targeting radar can't track the targets, sure you can fire blind and hope the missile eventually picks up the target and tracks. However, while you are hoping this happens, the aircraft with the smaller radar cross section can target and track you. This puts the aircraft with a larger radar cross section at a disadvantage in a beyond visual range fight.

This is where home court advantage comes into play. Just say a fight over Taiwan. China's mainland radars like in s-400 can cover all of Taiwan completely. China also has longer range on its missiles, like pl-15. China's strategy for j-20 is also to target USAs AWACS and tanker jets, which have massive RCS. J-20 also has a much longer range than f35, which fits in with their strategy. Long flight range, long missile range, and fastest speeds means China can shoot it's missiles, destroy AWACS and tankers, and then go back home to reload and USA cannot do anything. This will also be done under the cover of China's land based anti air and anti ship missile batteries. USA cannot sail carriers within 2500km of China's coast, so they will need to use tankers to refuel else they cannot even get close to Taiwan. If they can even make it to Taiwan, it will be taken out by China's layered air defences. USA won't have the balls to attack Chinese mainland, otherwise USA mainland will also be attacked. Or their Japanese bases or Guam bases etc. China also has many ships all with radars sailing around the area, all under the cover of China's land based anti air and anti ship batteries. Each ship itself has strong anti air and strong detection abilities. In future China will also be launching AWACS planes and drones from carriers, including helicopter landing docks. USA will be fighting against all of China's Air Force and navy and mainland anti air and anti ship batteries with just a few jets, zero chance, hence why USA loses every single war game over Taiwan. Even in SCS, China also has artificial islands with radar and Anti air batteries. China's anti access area denial(a2ad) strategy is too powerful, USA has no counter to it. Tyranny of distance and home field advantage is too much to overcome. It would be the same if china tried to fight USA over Cuba, and china had one base in Hawaii. Hawaii base would be destroyed easily, and Cuba would be too hard for china to defend against USAs full military might. China will also be using loyal wingman drones with future j-20s. China would also be launching thousands of drones nonstop from mainland, they would be detecting planes along with AWACS. They will be the AWACS hands and feet.

@@ex0duzz I agree with much of what you said, but there are some unknowns regarding technology. My original comment was restrained to the gen 5 aircraft comparison. However, I like the more holistic approach your analysis describes. I agree that China has a HUGE advantage with the proximity to its mainland and small island outposts. Their land-based ballistic missiles are perhaps the most dangerous threat to US CSG's, and I don't know if the CSG's have a counter to a coordinated attack of land based and aircraft anti-ship missiles. A CSG can only defend against a certain number of missiles before its defenses are overwhelmed. For me, one of the most interesting points you mention is the S400's. I realize they are described as incredibly effective; however, we have not had the opportunity to see them in real-world scenarios except in the early Ukrainian war. During this time, S400s shot down the old Soviet aircraft Ukraine flew that had not been upgraded to the level of modern 4th gen fighters. I am very interested to see the effectiveness of the S400 against modern 4th gen fighters. Will they live up to their expectations? Another interesting real world scenario that has yet to be tested is the JL-15 vs. the AIM260. Supposedly, they have similar ranges. However, we don't really know because it's classified. Since the Chinese have been more focused than the US on expanding its armed forces and the JL-15 was developed before the AIM260, it is likely there will be more JL-15s than AIM260s available for use. Similar to the S400 scenario, both missiles are untested in irl combat, so I am interested to see how they compare. Nevertheless, you bring up some great points that I agree with. I also think that the more time that passes before this conflict takes place, the more advantage goes to the Chinese because of they are more heavily focused on expanding their military.

@@ex0duzz this is if everything goes exactly to china's plans, which they'll be outnumbered in the air and on the ocean, they would have to rely on new US technology not picking them up, the US has its own loyal wingman programs and the US is still technologically ahead of the Chinese with many new systems they're working on being highly classified.

@@theamericanpotatonamedphil4306 China would not be outnumbered on the sea or the air lol they have a bigger surface fleet and at least 200 J-20's in service as of 2 years ago, they've since added an additional production line so it's not inconceivable that they have upwards of 350-400 of them. This conflict would take place in China's back yard which means it can bring the entirety of it's J-20 fleet to the fight, while America only has what it's carriers can hold and that's assuming they aren't taken out early by hypersonic missile saturation strikes, as good as the AEGIS system is it will not hold up to that kind of assault. Don't bother mentioning Japan, China's official public policy on Japan is that in the event Japan joins a war against China it will be hit with nuclear strikes immediately, Japan is well aware of this and is not going to take that risk, this would likely extend to any nearby country offering support to American forces. We have better carriers than China but China's destroyers are better and destroyers are becoming increasingly dominant in potential naval conflicts due to the emergence of quality hypersonic missiles for which there currently are no reliable countermeasures against. There is no chance for America to win in the South China Sea, those who wish for such a conflict do so at great cost to what's left of American prestige, which admittedly is not much these days.

Overall a good video - however few things: - while China likely used American data to their advantage (especially the FC-31), China didn’t used the MiG-1.44 as template. There are some contradicting points about the tail section (some say, that it has been licensed by MiG- some say, it has been copied), but it seems, that the MiG-1.44 has been rather lifted from a early Chinese prototype - not the other way around. China had a prototype of the J-9 (and the respective 2 engine interceptor variant was called J-9VI-II) which had *exactly the same dimension* as the J-20. Hence the “stealthified” it - but didn’t stole the design. - the RCS of the F-35 is still classified and it is not agreed, what it exactly is. It is thought for sure lower than 0.005m2 (rather between 0.0001 and 0.001m2). There is even one interview of an USAF official saying, that the RCS of the F-35 is smaller than the F-22. - The RCS of legacy fighter jets are meaning less. Even if a Hornet or a Eurofighter Typhoon is 0.5m2 - their weapons (missiles) and their external tanks increase the RCS massively. - The conclusion, that the J-20 is a 5th generation fighter jet is inconclusive. Having a low RCS doesn’t make it stealth - and especially not a 5th generation fighter jet. Avionics are equally important and it is very little known, how well the Chinese radars are working and how well it is integrated into the rest of the avionics. - At this point it is also not clear, what type of missiles the J-20 can carry. Obviously there has been pictures with anti-ship missiles and others. But even the technology of missiles of China is highly argued about.

It's much slimer and stream lined, very flat. The F-35 is nicknamed Fat Amy for a reason. It's bulky and curvey and has a big fat nozzle of an ass. If the F-22 didn't have the those near vertical stabs it would be even stealthier, and it's likely that whatever replaces it won't have a recognizable tail at all, like the YF-23.

I think it's part of the reason the US was never willing to sell them to allies. The stealth tech is so good that they can't risk it falling into enemy hands.

My question is who saw who first? Basically how does the stealth/ radar stack up? If both have top notch stealth that overcomes the other’s radar then the chance of a dog fight drastically increases. And like you said that’s not the F-35’s bread & butter. And if they got close enough for them to see each other this time, is that possibly the case?

@@ricardoricardoricardoricardo The J-20 and the SU-57 are not true 5th generation fighter jets. They are at best 4.5 generation platforms. The F-22 and the F-35 are true 5th generation platforms, and the USAF announced approximately two years ago that it had already flown a 6th generation fighter jet. The brand new B-21 Raider heavy strategic bomber is set to be officially revealed next month. It's not arrogance. The United States is simply leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else when it comes to tactical and strategic military aircraft.

I am always inclined to take any threat narrative with a grain of salt. It is in the militaries best interest to suggest a threat is higher, rather than lower. This ensures greater funding for R&D. This game runs on continually.

Your RCS figures are pure disinformation. Kenneth Wilsbach also said in March 2022 "those sensors that we rely on with the E-3 aren't really capable in the 21st century fight, especially against a platform like the J-20 or something similar to that," "it just can't see those platforms far enough out to be able to provide an advantage to the shooters." It's inconceivable that an E-3 can't track a legacy platform like the F-18 from far enough for an F-35 first-shoot. The most rigorous open-source RCS simulation to date predicts the J-20 has an RCS slightly larger but of the same order of magnitude as the F-35. And in the context of stealth fighters, "professional" flying loosely implies maintaining a stealthy, disciplined flight regime. This all tracks with the unofficial Chinese consensus that the J-20 had a lock on the F-35 through the KJ-500 before Team Blue knew it was there.
