Rob that is very informative. Your information on the golf courses, food and rail transport, sounds a lot better than Philipines. Also your tick of approval of health care and insurance sounds very good. Dan thank you for the interview.

Plenty to take from this video Dan. Some really good insights from your interviewee: simple things like taking a proper full size comfortable bus to BKK for a relatively reasonable fare rather than a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants option, when you don't really need to. His budget is at the upper end for you 'retire cheap' videos, but I think it is worthwhile exploring both ends of the spectrum. Easy to slice some expenditure of his budget: don't play golf!

This was an excellent interview Dan. Rob is clearly an intelligent individual with great communication skills. He definitely makes me want to visit SE Asia even more. I hope you do a second interview one day. I'm curious as to what types of activities he will do in the future, i.e., he makes mention of business he's taking care of Vietnam.

Thank you for the kind words Jack. As far as my business endeavors now and in the future go, let's just say I have "several irons in the fire". I always seem to. My primary activity involves trading the US equities markets at this point. With all the current "challenges in the world" impacting the many world financial markets, that can keep my blood pressure raised sufficiently to know that I am still alive! 🙂

I wish that ferry from Pattaya to Hua Hin would start up again. Doing that trip over land is just too much time on a bus for me. I would probably want to break it up with an overnight stay in Bangkok. I would also want a proper bus. Those suicide vans are too dangerous imo. Once the double track trains start running that could be a decent option as well.
@RobPittman
@RobPittman Жыл бұрын
I'm with you too. I would love to experience the boat ride over to Pattaya if only they would resume it. As far as the buses go, I agree with you. Not something to cheap-out on for sure. At most you might save is $2 or $3 USD. Your life is worth more than that!

Lived in Thailand 10 years in the 2010s...never want to return, but this video sure does make it tempting. I also said I never wanted to return to my hometown in the US, but I've been here for 7 years since returning from Thailand. I've visited Philippines twice for a total of 4-5 weeks--a much smaller sample size--it just seems more like home to me.

@@jackbaldwin3649 there are nice Thai people but many have black hearts. The police are so corrupt and started to be much more aggressive. At my job at a university (I have a bachelor degree) and side jobs at local schools were great the first 5 years 2005-2010 but began to change after that. More Thai teachers with good English skills, more younger teachers coming for a year or 2 and (ironically) more Filipinas taking jobs at much lower wages while willing to work longer hours. Finally, the expectation you must pay the parents if you want to marry a girl made looking for a mate much more complicated. But I left (again ironically) because I met and married a filipina teacher and we had a baby. So we came to the USA (and ultimately divorced).

I have visited the cha-am area but only once and the trip was rushed Is there an area close to the beach that is not tied so much to that super highway that runs north - south ?
@RobPittman
@RobPittman Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! You only have to get off the main road and there are plenty of places on both sides to choose from. And an excellent place to look in is called "Palm Hills". Fantastic well-maintained golf course and many beautiful homes throughout there. And I agree, while the beaches are not ugly, they are not the beautiful white sand beaches that you would find in the south part of Thailand.

It is that way a good bit of the year in most places. However, from October to February or so it's actually quite pleasant in most of Thailand, and can actually be "chilly" up in the north given the higher elevations obviously. I often am amused by what the locals consider "cold". When it's 70 degrees F here they will dress like Americans would if it is 40 degrees F. Personally, I'll be running around in my golf shirts and loving it! 😁

Good advice to any newbies. And just like Dan says, plan to spend 3 to 6 months someplace or country before you commit. My wife is having full dentures in the Philippines right now which includes 12 tooth extractions. Total price $882 without dental insurance while my friend who had his dentures done here in California with Blue Cross coverage ended up with an unusable one after a few months. My mom has Medicare Medical in the US and still insists on having her dentures done in the Philippines even though she can get it basically for free stateside due to quality issues that my parents and their senior friends had with theirs. The feedback among my Filipino friends who live here is basically the same they'd rather pay the airfare to get it done in their home country. There are a lot of foreign students taking up dentistry in the Philippines and I wouldn't be surprised if there are Thais and Malaysians among them.

Thank you for the question. I just turned 69 years-young a few days ago. And while the mind may be willing, sometimes the body isn't as much. My advice is to take care of your health and nutrition. Thailand and most of Asia has really good and diverse health care services. The massage health benefit here is both very therapeutic and quite affordable. That's a big benefit to maintaining your health and flexibility.

Those of you that are planning to pull up stakes and move overseas and eve you that have already moved overseas and living off Social Security or some kind of pension should be aware to the world economy and the U.S. dollar. Those who are still living in America are already having problems staying afloat with prices rising everyday. This is also happening here in Thailand where I am living but I was lucky to sell my home and land years ago and was able to invest it wisely and get out of the market with enough money to live many years in Thailand. I recommend that you have more money than just your monthly social security or a pension to live on here since you may find out later that you don't have enough and go back to your home country with nothing waiting for you. The home I bought here in Thailand 10 years ago from a British man ran into that problem and realized he was not able to afford Thailand anymore and the money I paid him for his house was only going to get him by for a year at best when he got back to England.

@@papadougpapadougsadventures Long story, I early retired at age 37 / work optional. I traveled the world for the last year, although I really enjoyed it, I realized I feel better with some structured work in my life. So I negotiated a contract where I can read medical imaging from anywhere in the world (M.D. / diagnostic radiologist). And from what I can tell, the Philippines is the only country in the world where I can just show up and stay for 12+ months without any complicated Visa issues (correct me if I am wrong). If I like it I will stay longer.

That would be great! More than likely though, women are fewer and further in between than the men. In most Asian cultures age is only a number. In my experience what Thai women are looking for in an expat is "a man with a good heart". True, they want security and everything else that any other partner naturally would want, but they are cheerful, beautiful, caring, kind, thoughtful and dedicated women. I'm good with that! Just don't go looking in the bars in my opinion. Not the place to find the kind of woman I was looking for.
