That Video makes it seem, that it is totally insane. But overall the most participants will send a normal, quality contender. There are always a handful of this crazy contributions as well. 😜 Nevermind, thanks for checking out this classical European Contest. The next one will take place in May 22.

Like I assume most other people, I watch your videos because I'm a massive football fan, but I've got to say, Eurovision hypes me up as much as the Champions League Final, it's just such a fantastic event! I don't know about others but I always have a massive party on the night of the Grand Final, and just drink a load and enjoy the random entertainment (although in the UK it's traditional to only start drinking after song 9). The show is massive; for context, when Germany hosted it in 2011 they literally used a football stadium. Eurovision consists of 3 shows, 2 semi finals on Tuesday and Thursday, and the Grand Final on Saturday, which usually has about 200 million viewers from across the World. This year's final will be on the 22nd of May, so you've definitely picked the right time to get into it. The top 10 from each semi final progress to the final, where they join the big five (UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy), and the host nation, to make up the 26 finalists. The Grand Final starts with an opening ceremony where the host country get to show off their culture and some past Eurovision stars, there's also a flag parade for each of the participating countries, like at the Olympics. Then the first half of the show is taken up by the performances, which happen with usually only a minute between them, for stage changes. Once everyone has performed there's a break to vote for your favourite, and this usually consists of 3 interval acts; a performance from the previous year's winner, a performance form a major US star (e.g. Madonna), and a more Eurovision focused act. Then in the second half of the show, each country takes it in turns to reveal their votes. This can get a bit boring, but usually by this point, the UK commentator is drunk and starts making fun of what the representatives reading out the results are wearing, so it always keeps things fun. Then the winner gets to play their song again, and you have to start thinking about that horrible hangover you'll be dealing with tomorrow. Some good iconic entries worth checking out: Netherlands 2019: Current defending champions kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGSnXqVqpMylbdU Iceland 2020: One of the favourites to win last year before Covid cancelled the competition kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3m4aKKZq5iGaNE Russia 2016: Probably the most high budget performance ever kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2qXlaaqZ5V2b7s Austria 2014: The winning drag Queen they were talking about, Conchita Wurst kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4O4epSslpmKiK8 Switzerland 1988: Celine Dion, probably the best vocal performance in the show's history kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWfFaHV-fNB-h6M Norway 2009: A record breaking points scorer (before the system was changed) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYnamI2Cad-rb9E And some crazy ones: Finland 2006: that Rock band in the mad costumes kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXLLaoGIfLObi7c Ukraine 2007: a song that will get stuck in your head, whether you like it or not kzbin.info/www/bejne/npfNeX2kmruipKc Ireland 2008: Literally just a Turkey kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqSWnKt9pMSaqNE Iceland 2019: it's just insane kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYXFZ2yNoKeVrNU Lithuania 2006: we are the winners kzbin.info/www/bejne/enOklYKihrWVrck UK 2007: One of many examples that we just don't want to win anymore kzbin.info/www/bejne/joWZqoJ_eJucnqs Russia 2012: The Grannies kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJi4pKeooq-tr8U And Finally, you might want to check out the best interval act, Love, Love, Peace, Peace kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaeZpZqkrZudirM

@@Kikiranka Yes, it is Graham Norton. Maybe drunk commentator is an exaggeration, but he's definitely tipsy. He starts drinking during song 9, and Eurovision is a long old show. It's not like he's slurring words or falling about the place, he's just making fun of usually what the spokespeople are wearing, or their background. It's great, because the voting can get pretty boring when you know your country doesn't have any chance, which is pretty much every year for the UK. Pretty sure there's plenty of Graham Norton funny Eurovision moments videos on KZbin to check out so you can see what I mean

That guy who is explainning in the small video what Eurovision is, is misrepresenting all of it. Funny entries are the least in the whole competition, where most countries take it seriously and send quality and good songs. And of course most of the participating countries want to win. That's an honor and hosting the contest supposes great economic and touristic benefits for the city that holds it. Don't believe all that guy says. Try to watch every entry from this year and judge yourself.
@swanpride
@swanpride 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that nobody wants host it is a claim which got traction when Ireland won three times in a row and for ireland being still a very poor country back then, this actually was a little bit much, but in general, the countries want to win. This is not olympia, where the IOC settles you with the cost and reaps all the benefits, if you do it right hosting Eurovision can be a boon for tourism. And those "fun entries" aren't necessarily meant to be insulting, the baking grandmas were send because people liked them and their song, and sometimes it really pays to do something crazy on the stage.
@k.v.7681
@k.v.7681 3 жыл бұрын
It's changing, but people really did not want to host Eurovision. It does NOT bring economic activity and tourism to a great enough degree to always justify it's cost. Shit's expensive af, especially in the west where salaries for technical staff and contracts for tv hosting and hosts cost an arm. Comodities are also more expensive. Not even talking about renting the infrastructure, if it already exists, or building it, if it doesn't. And it wasn't to justify Ireland's wins. It was to face the economic crisis. That trend of "not wanting to win" started in the 2000's. Coffers were empty. Now sometimes it brings benefits, but it's very hit or miss. Reputation is also sometimes worth investing in, and a monetary loss is justifiable in that sense (Like Ukraine for instance, barely recouping a third of it's investment). But during an economical crisis, that's out the window. It's a lot like the Olympics. You never really know where it's gonna land. You have countries Billions in debt after some years. (In case of Eurovision, several millions). As for the "troll" songs... those are not the ones sent to avoid hosting. People know by now trolling could very well land you a win. The genuinely bad ones are the ones sent to avoid the win (like moustache sent by France).

This guy possibly highlited every worst bit of the eurovision from many years into one video. Yes there are some silly acts and there is normally about 2-3 per year but that is out of 40 average to great songs. I have watch every Eurvision since 1973 except 2 live on the night (i was in Australia for one of them). Below i have put links to a compiation video of all the winners but it is a bit long and another for the winners since 2000. Plus i have put a few links to some of the full performances of those winners and one or two others. Even if you dont make reaction videos to all or any of these give them a watch as it will give you a better insight into what Eurovision is really about and not just what that idiot highlighted. The only goofy act that has ever won was Finland in 2006 and credit it was a great perfomance even if the song was average. But Finland been competing since 1961 and never came close so after so long perhaps they deserved it. Isreal takes part because it is part of the European Broadcasting Union. Australia were big fans of ABBA who won in 1974 and started showing the contest each year. They applied to show it live around 2000 i think and because of their support for the contest were invited to submit an entry for the 60th anniversary in 2015. the rules is if they win they would get another European country to co host and would probably chose the UK. Oh, it is so easy to make fun of Eurovision. Just show 10 of the weirdest entries. But show the last 10 winners and it will be a different story. I don't fully buy the political voting. I think culture plays a bigger part. Nordic countries often like the same type of songs, hence the points. But if eg. Denmark sends a boring and easy-forgotten song (which happens a lot) the other Nordic countries will ignore it.

Well, the Cyprus/Greek vote by the jury is clearly political. And it is so obvious that by now the audience is either groaning or scream out who got the 12 points themselves, because everyone knows what is going on. I have at least 8 songs on my list to win. The staging makes the difference of winning or not winning. To mention the "BIG 5" - the automatic qualifiers - they are not that bad. Don't worry, you guys are going to have your own version of it next year. Dunno if it will be called Americavision or something else, but it's happening. There's also that Will Ferrel movie on Netflix "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Firesaga" it does capture the spirit of Eurovision (his wife is Swedish and he got introduced to it when visiting the inlaws several years back, and was even part of the Swedish delegation one year as research for the movie) and was a nice thing to have in 2020 when there was no contest. Plus Iceland had a fun callback to the movie in their choice of presenter for the Icelandic jury votes this year, lol.

Ireland benefited during a time when everyone had to use their own national language so they could use English. And UK has won tons of times but they don’t really care now and send bad or boring acts and complain later (they got 0 points this year and many blame Brexit even though the song was dull and song needs to be someone’s favorite to get anything from televising or top 10 for juries). And Israel has 4 wins these days an Italy 3. And Were Are the Winners of Eurovision is a good song that did well. There isn’t that much trolling the video claims anyway, it’s not even made by an European. Performances are often over the top but it doesn’t make them unpopular or trolls.

Eurovision is so derided by all but also so eagerly anticipated. The eccentric songs, camp presentations, the technical hitches in the voting and the tedious political voting ("Cyprus gives its 12 points to.....Greece") but we all love it. Many of us hold Eurovision parties each year. We meet with a large group of our gay friends each year for a festival of booze and bitchery with elaborate scoring systems of our own e.g. 'shagabilitty" Nobody like the UK at the moment (did they ever) so this year we got no points from anybody but bring it on next year

The video you're watching is WRONG about ESC having so many troll entries. Yes, there are always one or two that are campy but it is not the norm. Most countries DO in fact want to win. The video you're watching only highlighted the campy ones - not a good representation of the usual entries.

I hope you saw more videos, because the guy misexplains everything bc he actually laughs at it! Let's make some things clear: -Music Matters the most in eurovision -There aren't silly participations...just unique ones! And they are the ones that made the biggest success afterwards! - it's not an ALIEN SHOW....It's the biggest music/tv show in the whole world! And every year the winning country amazes us with the stage and the lightings! Actually I personally believe that This year's Eurovision was the best one as for the technology they used! -Verka Serduchka is not "a strategy"! A drag queen or an LGBTQ+ participation IS NOT A STRATEGY....Bc that's exactly what he meant! -A participant singing in his native language and representing his country is the whole spirit of Europe and eurovision! Not a "for some reason" thing! Just like this year's song from the Netherlands whose lyrics are in English and Sranan Tongo a native African Language! -The big 5 send the songs they want without wanting to "suck"! France this year sent an exceptional song worthy of winning! Italy has done the same thing 3 times the last years 2015-2018-2021! -All the countries want to win the trophy and to host the next one! -Eurovision is an LGBTQ+ fanbase contest, so YEAH "drag queens after drag queens after drag queens" EXIST! ACTUALLY THE LAST ONE... CONCHITA WURST WON THE COMPETITION IN 2014 FOR AUSTRIA! The guy obviously showed the "worst" of eurovision just to make a BAD point about the contest! I hope you saw other videos about eurovision and not only his! Bc he really is wrong!

Sadly, the video that you reacted to is not a very accurate representation of Eurovision :)... I mean, this american tried to to grasp upon a cultural phenomenon that is Eurovision to his best ability, but I guess it's hard to when you haven't watched it year to year for your whole life :D. Troll acts are very very rare these days. The music is contemporary and often features in top charts. Also, nobody is trying to lose on purpose. Actually, most of the countries are doing their best - that's why it's so interesting to watch! KZbin channel "Overthinking it" recently did a very cool and accurate video about why Americans should watch Eurovision, take a look ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX6thnZ-qttqpqc

Eurovision is such a cornerstone. It’s the biggest non-sporting event on TV each year, with almost two times more viewers than the Super Bowl (200 million). It is the maddest night of the year, so much fun. There have been some huge successes out of it: ABBA, Céline Dion and Riverdance (created just to be the interval act in 1994!). Most people grow up watching it and the format is so familiar to everyone. I think the phrases “douze points” (12 points) and “Good evening *insert host city* this is *insert capital city* calling. Here are the votes of the *insert country* jury” are just ingrained in all Europeans minds. The voting is always so much fun and the new system keeps the suspense right until the end. (BTW, if you’re wondering about why Australia is allowed to participate, it’s because they LOVE Eurovision there and were invited to participate a few years back for the 60th anniversary. They just kept coming back after!)

Actually, the US has won the Contest already, f.ex. in 2010. A song called Satellite was performed by a German singer. The contest is not about who is the best singer or delivering the best performance - it is about the song - the prices go to the songwriters. Hence the name: Eurovision Song Contest. July Frost a US-Citizen wrote the Satellite song and it won. That is why Celine Dion was able to start for Switzerland and why the language used is irrelevant in the competition. The political borders of Europe are not the determining reason. Members of the EBU - European Broadcasting Union, can take part in the contest. Currently, EBU has 70+ members in 50+ countries and 30+ associated members spread over 20+ countries. Australia is an associated member.

No offense but you can't judge the competition only by seeing the "troll" performances. In fact there are many good songs, and also some famous artists that were competing in the Eurovision song contest. For example, ABBA, Johnny Logan, The Rasmus, and Celine Dion of course!

Eurovision has some trolls but sometimes it is hard to tell if they are actually trying. The UK got the absolute WORST this year. They scored completely 0 and are the first country to have done so since 2016. I think it is because the voice of the singer didn't match the actual song he was singing... or the other way around. 0 points from the professionals, 0 from the public. The Russian grandmas were lit though. Everybody loved them.

The Grand Finale is today! I hear Americans can watch it on something called Peacock? Or you can watch it on KZbin using a VPN. There are some good songs this year, my fav is from Ukraine (I’ll put a link below). On the official Eurovision channel, you can watch the music videos and previous performances of the contestants. So for a start, you can just pick those with a lot of views and get an idea of what’s in store.

Some of the "troll" songs he showed weren't troll. They are just niche genres that are as welcome to ESC as every other genre. That's the big thing ablut Eurovision. Every country can send what they thought was interesting. Safe rarely wins. You need good performance of the song and vocals to match. For some songs you need to go all out on the staging, for some you need to scale back. Everyone sings live. Everyone has their 3 minutes, and pretty much just those 3 minutes. You need to make an impression. But, since it's shown live, there is no skipping. Armenian grandmom or sheltered swiss teenager might hear metal or rap for first time and realize they like it. Or some edgy rocker from Sweden might hear the most beautiful Balkan ballad. Streaming has made it much easier to stay in your music bubble. Eurovision breaks those bubbles. It cross pollinates the genres constantly.

EXACTLY!!! The great thing about Eurovision is, that everything goes. The important thing is, that you offer up a good song, no matter what genre or entertainer. And there is no reason to go all elitist over baking grandmas, this kind of music has been around for a long time, and will most likely always have a place in our various cultures. Also, one should never forget that the basic idea of Eurovision has always been cultural exchange in order to foster peace.
