Dan has not been published much. There are some field recording around in private hands. It is good to see him younger. He is so good now, it impossible to imitate.

Some say that all good banjo music leapt, fully grown and armed like Athena, from a crack in Dan Gellert's head. That's one funky-ass skull.

Ray Alden, who recorded that, told me he used a second microphone under the banjo to get Dan's full sound. I'm not sure, though, that this is the particular recording he was referring to. In my opinion, it was the first recording where Dan's banjo came through well. Dan and Brad Leftwich recorded a very nice cassette; I don't know whether it is still available. It's called "A Moment in Time," and it was on Marimac (1993).
