Absolutely loving your enthusiasm..If you would like an example of how much the supporters of our game love it,I would recommend you watch Buddy Franklin's 1000th goal. The response from the fans(both sides) is epic.

Love your enthusiasm mate. I have watched lots of Americans reacting to our great game. NONE of them are as passionate as you are. (Even though they are all blown away as well) I am hereby declaring you are now part kangaroo. (Compliment) honorary Aussie. I am so sad about you watching the grand final with my Sydney Swans because my team NEVER plays like that. I can only believe that because there’s so many youngsters in the team, that they must have got overawed by the occasion. Anyway I’m giving you the following information for anything you may have not caught up with in the beginners guide. On behalf of all Aussies, you have our respect. Crowds average around 45,000, but a couple of top teams playing can get anything up to about 90,000 people for some regular-season games. The grand final always closer to 100,000. This season’s Grand Final in September attracted 100,025 fans. When they all scream together you would not believe how electric the atmosphere is. At the Grand Final or any other game, parents take their kids because those crowds are one big happy family, and there is only the odd idiot because everybody is there to enjoy the game. Nothing like the trouble making fans in some overseas sports. It’s more than a game, it’s a way of life for Australians and very much the glue that holds the community together. NRL, (rugby) struggles to get over 15,000 fans to their match of the day. Soccer is even less. (Most Aussie rules fans don’t think much of rugby or soccer.) The score line of 20-10-130 means 20 goals x 6 points each = 120 pts + 10 behinds (points) = 130 total points. You can have less goals than the other team, but more total points which is the winner. (Example) Team A, 14-8-92 (team A wins with more total points, less goals) Team B, 15-1-91 (remember the first figure is goals multiplied by six points each) When you take a mark (catch) you can play on, (keep going) or stop on the spot and take a free kick where the opposition is not allowed to touch you. The umpire will blow his whistle every time someone marks the ball, but if the player does not stop and plays on, the umpire will call, “play on.” Various free kicks. If the umpire sees a free kick should be given for an infringement, but a teammate plays on, the umpire will call, “advantage,” and let him keep going. This keeps the game flowing rather than hindering the team by bringing the ball back for the free kick. Goals. The 50 meter arc is only a guide. Players can kick for goal from any part of the ground. If the ball is touched by any player of either team from when it leaves the boot and before crossing the goal line, it becomes one point. (If the goal umpire is in doubt, they will call for a score review, which involves a slow motion video replay.) After each goal the ball is brought back to the centre of the ground and contested by two ruckmen as you saw. All players must resume their original positions at that time. Behinds. (Points) The square marked on the ground in front of the goals is where the fullback kicks the ball back into play after a behind is scored. Handball. Ball held in one hand and punched with a closed fist with the other. Handball can be given to a teammate from any direction. Throwing the ball is illegal, and will result in a free kick given to the opposition. 15 metres. What they said is badly explained. What they should have said is that you have to bounce the ball any time “BEFORE” 15 mtrs. (NOT EVERY 15 MTRS.) Most players bounce after a few steps to avoid going beyond 15 m, which would see a free kick given to the other team. To say it another way is, “You can’t run more than 15 m without bouncing the ball.” Umpires are good at gauging 15 mtrs) These guys are super athletes, who run flat out for up to 15 km per game, whilst being harassed, bumped, and tackled. They have mostly trim, super fit bodies and need to have an all-round athletic ability to carry out the various skills required. Each quarter with extra time runs for about 30 minutes, which means they’re running around for two hours apart from breaks between the quarters. To explain how fit they become, pre-season training begins Monday 7th of November and continues until March next year, (2023) when the new season begins. A free kick is given against a player who kicks the ball over the boundary line on the full, or purposely kicks it towards the boundary line. Otherwise if the ball runs over the line during play, a boundary umpire tosses the ball back in over his head. Similar to the centre bounce start, two tall players called ruckmen jostle and try to hit the ball to one of their own players. This allows for a neutral contest. There are too many ways free kicks can be given to mention here. Best to search the Internet for books/videos on the rules/laws of AFL. That oval ball has a mind of it’s own and won’t bounce properly unless you know what you’re doing. However considering that most Australian babies have a football in their hands before they can walk, they have plenty of time to grow up practising it. Junior clubs are all over the country, and there are kids of all ages that bounce the ball perfectly, as well as mastering the other skills. The top team at the end of the regular season is called the “minor premier.” But we don’t care about that really, it’s those finals and who wins the grand final that we go nuts about. There are two parts to the final eight, we’ll call them the first four and the second four. Teams play-off in the first four and get a second chance if they lose, they then play the winners of the games in the second four and the losers of the second four are eliminated. If you search around, you will find a broadcast of AFL games in America, the UK and other places. The season is now over and will start a new season in March 2023. Aussie rules is played as an amateur sport in many countries in the world, If you look it up you’ll find AFL leagues in your area. Because it’s amateur it’s nowhere near as brutal as our game, and it’s more a social type game played for fun with beers and barbecue afterwards. In America they have the USAFL, which comprises 40 different leagues including a women’s league. Beginning in 1858 our game was codified before any of the other sports, in other words we started it so we didn’t copy other sports, it was the other way around. It was actually invented to keep cricket players fit during the off-season. It’s debatable that some aspects of the game were taken from the aboriginal game known as Marn Grook, where aboriginal people have been kicking around a ball of possum skin for centuries. Welcome to the most exciting game on the planet. Once again I am blown away by your passion and excitement. You would fit right in with the screaming fans at a live game. Cheers. The incredible passion and pride you all have for your sport, country and fellow Aussies is so refreshing!! Im thrilled to have found you all!! @@johnnybasement430 Your comment is as full on and appreciated as was your reaction mate. Don’t beat yourself up about the rugby confusion. Yes we bark about it but you apologised and we let it go completely. So don’t sweat it. Funny you should say about the NY Jets. The Sydney Swans used to be the South Melbourne Swans, and were the lowly punching bag of the AFL. They were going broke and were given a choice in 1982. Either move to Sydney NSW, or fold up completely. NSW was a whole new market for Aussie rules as the entire state was rugby mad. After about 15 or so lean years they got their act together, and have taken over from rugby, drawing more spectators to the games after infiltrating schools and communities. I’m proud to say that my Sydney Swans have now played more years in finals than any other AFL team in the last 20 years. So they came from almost extinct to an AFL powerhouse. They are also highly respected as having the best culture in the AFL. Their players and coaches are incredibly close to each other and are respected by the community for the help they often give. The Swans have the games absolute superstar in Lance (Buddy) Franklin. He’s the first red-and-white player you saw kicking a long goal in the opening of the “beginners guide.” A 6 foot five monster of a man with the speed, agility, and evasive skills of a rabbit. This season he kicked his 1000th career goal, (only seven other players in a 150 year history have done that) and 20,000 people invaded the SCG field to congratulate him. If you search for “Lance Franklin’s 1000th goal,” the footage will blow your mind. You should also search for, “Lance Franklin’s best 23 goals,” and you will see what a freak he is. We would be delighted if you decided to be a Swans supporter, but that’s up to you, your choice. Any time you are confused about a certain rule, I will always be more than happy to explain it for you. Because as I said, your incredible passion for our great game gets my respect. Cheers mate. Note. In Buddy’s 23 goals the crowd also runs on the field. That was because he kicked his 100th goal for the season, which only 27 players had previously done.

MCG is Melbourne Cricket Ground. The ground actually belongs to the Melbourne Cricket Club. Cricket is played during the summer season against teams from other nations: England, India, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, New Zealand in one day matches and also in matches that last for five days. But it is Aus football that bring in the huge crowds during the winter/spring seasons, especially the Grand Final. Aus football was invented in Melbourne in 1858 by the MCC to keep cricketers fit during the off season. Melbourne is the home of Aus football and is why the Final is played at the MCG.

@@johnnybasement430 You couldn't have picked a better sport to get into, brother... It turns followers into fanatics once you "get" it. As a former amateur league player and, after I got hit with too many injuries to keep playing, an umpire in my younger years... I can say that footy borders on being a "religion" to millions of Aussies. The lingo that gets used by commentators makes sense once you "get" footy... The depth of strategy used by the teams despite it appearing at first to be a very ad-hoc game... The statistics they garner from it (and I remember reading somewhere that footy has more analytics applied to it than any other sport in the world.)... The sheer athleticism of the players to punish their bodies for about 2 hours per game as well as training (which always includes cross-training especially swimming) and weights sessions... There's just nothing else in the world that compares to it. Once you can grasp what 100,000 screaming fanatics in a single stadium sounds like when the final siren to end the game is under a minute away and there's less than a goal separating the victor from the defeated but nobody knows who it'll be yet... THEN, and only then will you fully "get" the raw passion that is Australian football. Welcome to the greatest sport ever developed, mate. While you're going down this rabbit-hole, make sure to check out your own nation's AFL competition... The USAFL... it's been slowly building up a following for the past 25 years and in my opinion, quite interesting to watch for an amateur league without any real junior development program to funnel new talent into the sport. You can find out more at USAFL dot kom. 👍

One interesting fact about our game length. When u are at the game live, u only see a clock that counts up and it never stops counting up. So u only know when it gets to around 30mins on that clock, there isnt long left. But it could be a few seconds or 5 mins left. U have no idea and it adds to the suspense and the urgency to score if its close. If u watching on tv, the clock counts down and is stopped for the occasional breaks in play like blood rule, out of bounds or goals. So if watching on tv, u know when the siren will blow. Players also dont know how long is left to play, although the team officials on the sidelines do know and can relay it to the players. But with such a big ground and so many players, most wont know the time left.

It doesn't have to travel 15m before someone can catch it, it just has to go 15m before the catch is considered a "mark." On top of the ball having to have travelled 15m, it can't have been touched by someone else first. A mark means that the umpire will blow the whistle and you can either play on, or you can stop and take an unimpeded kick. Players quite often play on after marking the ball.

My credentials! I started playing at 6 & I'm 66 now. I stopped playing at 28. I had enough injuries from footy as well as a motorbike crash at 17 & a fall off a balcony at 7. I still love footy & especially the Swans. Time is added into each quarter. Depending on injuries causing stops, throw-ins, goals & the bounce following, a quarter can & is often 30 minutes long. The game can be & again, is often 2 hours long. Some quarters are well into 30-plus minutes, like when Buddy Franklin kicked his 1000th goal or when the lights went out in Brisbane. There are many rules that are designed to eradicate cheating behaviour but unfortunately the decider isn't always objective. The umpires are often biased. The crowd will often tell you. Sometimes the umpires are correct & the crowd has missed something. Holding the ball is a really hot topic currently. The umpires are getting this half right, half wrong but this issue has been an issue all through my life. I doubt it'll be fixed this time around bcos there are biases & umpires have their favourites & ignorances. Any questions, just ask. I'll leave the simple ones for others to explain but if you want a real insight into why a rule is in-place, ask me & I'll get into real depth on the reasoning.

Hi Johnny Basement i'm subscriber #956 You keep watching those highlights and learn them rules and we all will guide you through it .Yes you need to bounce the ball every 15 meters you can not just run like a NFL running back and carry till tackled .If you hit the 2 large post its a behind ( 1 point ) but if it hit the smaller posts on the full its worth nothing and ball is turned over if it is hit not on the full it is an umpire throw in next to the behind post.A speccy is a shorter slang word for spectacular ie.he took a spectacular mark we just say he took a speccy .i;m a huge NFL fan i follow the Lions in AFL so of course i've followed Detroit Lions all my life i know everyone hates us and the city but thats the way we like it .Looking forward till your next one ..Grady (not my real name but i'm guessing you know who Grady is being an American ?

Aussie rules fans are so passionate that we love seeing other people get interested in the sport and we all want to help you out as much as possible. This video is about the best out there at explaining the basics . You got a pretty good handle on it but watch it a couple of times before a game . Of course these are the basics but there are other rules that make finer details within the game. Im a Geelong supporter and even though we smashed the Swans and are all pretty happy about the outcome it was very one sided and probably not the best first game to watch . You would be better off watching the game before hand , the semi final between Collingwood and Sydney. The game is fast paced , the ball can move from one end of the ground to the other in 15 seconds , which is about one and a half of your NFL fields . There isnt much stop start play and the scoring system makes for close games that could come down to just one point. The girls are also getting more coverage and interest and there are over seas leagues now in Europe, US and asia . Welcome aboard , enjoy the game . Go Cats.

Time added at end of each quarter so a 20 minute quarter maybe 25 minutes or longer especially where there are concussions which don't occur as often as you may think as the league has introduced tough penalties in game suspensions and fines for head high contact (that can be avoided) A free kick is awarded to an opponent who tackles a player who doesn't dispose the ball properly (kick or handball). The free kick is taken at the mark of the tackle or where the umpire judges that to be. A goal umpire signals with 2 hands for a goal, 1 hand for a point or behind. If the ball hits the goal post, the goal umpire will tap the post. If the ball is kicked into a point post (outer post) on the full, that results in a free kick to the opposition. The same applies in a ball is kicked out of bounds on the full or a field umpire considers that a player is not trying to keep the ball in play (mustn't tap the ball over the boundary under pressure from opposition player) In 2020 and 2021, the Grand Final was held in other States (not in Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria) Every capital city has modern stadiums with 50k to 60k capacities The southern states (Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria) are considered the AFL states while the eastern states (NSW and Queensland) are rugby orientated. Still more attend AFL games in Sydney and Brisbane than Rugby

when you watch a game a lot of that will make more sense. The GF is normally at the MCG. I think there's been 3 times it hasn't been - 2020 it was in Brisbane because Melbourne had awkward Covid restrictions. 2021 it was in Perth for a similar reason. And in 1991 it was held at Waverly Oval (I think they were rebuilding a stand at the MCG). This only includes modern times - since it became the AFL....As Aussie Rules evolved, different competitions were formed. In Melbourne this was the Victorian Football Association (VFA). In 1897 some of the stronger clubs were concerned that their gate takings were down when they played sides that they would definitely beat, and broke away to form the Victorian Football League (VFL). Over time, this became the most watched competition (meanwhile other states had their own competitions - the main ones being SANFL in South Australia, WAFL in Western Australia and TFL in Tasmania). VFL became the defacto standard, although there was off season games between teams from the different competitions (eg I think at one stage the premiers from the competitions would play off for a title as the best team in Australia), and there was a "State of Origin" series where sides would be formed from the whole VFL based on where the players came from - and there was big rivalry (I think especially between SA and Vic - but that might just be my perception growing up in SA). During the 1980s teams from the SANFL and WAFL showed interest in joining the VFL but nothing much came of it. Around the same time, South Melbourne Swans were struggling financially and controversially moved to Sydney and became the Sydney Swans (although they still have strong support in Melbourne). Not long after, WA and QLD were granted licenses and the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears (later merged with Fitzroy Lions to form the Brisbane Lions) entered the competition. In 1990, ewcognising that the VFL was no longer only Victorian based, the league was renamed AFL (and a secondary league eventually became the VFL - I think it had been called the VFA up to that point, but AFAIK this is separate to the VFA/VFL mentioned earlier). Through the late 80s and early 90s SA tried fielding a side too - but there was a lot of politicking (Port tried to undermine the process to get a side in, but were ultimately beaten to the punch) and a brand new Adelaide-based side (the Crows) was formed. Not long after a bid was made to add a second WA side - and Fremantle Dockers entered the league. With the merging of Fitzroy and Brisbane (mentioned earlier) a spot was created eventually allowing Port Adelaide in with a second SA licence. Around 2005 (or earlier) the AFL saw opportunities to form a side near the location of the richest AFL Club (Southport) and the Gold Coast Suns were created, joining in 2011 as a second QLD team. This remains a somewhat controversial decision - GC has struggled to be competitive, and there's strong opinion that the reason for Southport's money (and success) is pokies rather than an interest in football. The AFL maintains it's part of a 30 year plan - but time will tell. The following year, with the demise of an NRL team in the area the AFL recognised an opportunity to develop a supporter base in Western Sydney. This was again considered a bit controversial, mainly because it was seen as NRL heartland while stronger Aussie Rules districts (like the Riverina - which has produced a number of standouts) were ignored. Eventually the bid got up (and with a push from Sheedy encouraging Canberrans to spend $50 to get some games to the nations capital) and the Greater Western Sydney Giants were born as a second NSW team. The result of Sheedy's push means that 3 or 4 games are played in Canberra each year (there was always some games played there, but they used to be neutral - now they're exclusively Giants games, and there is a lot of money spent trying to lure young Canberrans to GWS - giving up other teams or sports they support). IMO the league is two big (it seems odd to play a few teams twice (once at home, once away) and other teams only once, but there's now a push for a Tasmanian and Northern Territorian side to be added (with strongly divided opinion about the viability of either of those sides). Personally I think the AFL needs to have a look at splitting into conferences or similar - on the face of it it looks easy - you could have 1 SA, NSW, QLD, WA side and 5 Vic sides in each conference, coming together at the end of the season to play finals.....but the AFL rightly worries that then you have fewer local grudge matches when sides from the same state play off (There are some blockbuster Vic games (mostly involving Collingwood - who are a very polarising team), but SA's Showdowns, WA's Derby's, NSW's Battles of the Bridge and QLD's QClashes are massive fan favourites with the winner taking bragging rights as best in the state ). Ooops, got carried away - Glad to see you've found our great game, and I'm already getting the feeling you're going to love the journey!

All good!!! Your passion for the sport is all over the comments!!! Thanks for the VFL history!! I had no clue how deep that runs!! WOW! I hear you on the leagues size and how the matchups are made. In the NFL, the similarity of teams playing twice a season(possible 3rd time in the playoffs) and only other teams once. For the reason you stated is exactly why the leagues do this. They want the rivalries!! Im a NY Jets fan and our main rivals are the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and the most hated of all...the New England Patriots. These 4 all play each other twice BUT will have an out of conference game vs like an Arizona Cardinals team that has ZERO flare because there has never been a rivalry built up over time. In the end it all comes down to the mighty dollar and thats my opinion of course but I cant think of any other! I mean Im a 4 decades NY Jets fan so how smart could I really be! 😆 Much respect to you for taking the time to type out such a detailed comment Michael!! #BasementMentality

In 2021 Perth’s Optus Stadium hosted the game played in a twilight time slot.

The draw for the finals can be complicated, so this is how they are played. 1st EF 5th v 8th and 2nd EF 6th v 7th, these are Elimination Finals and the winners progress to the next round; 1st QF 1st v 4th and 2nd QF 2nd v 3rd, these are the Qualifying Finals with the winners progressing to the Preliminary Finals, while the losers progress to the next round. The next round are the Semi Finals where the losers of the Qualifying Finals play the winners of the Elimination Finals, 1st SF loser of 1st QF plays winner of 1st EF and 2nd SF loser of 2nd QF plays winner of 2nd EF; the winner progress to the next round. The next round are the Preliminary Finals where the winners of the Qualifying Finals play the winners of the Semi Finals, 1st PF winner of 1st QF plays winner of 2nd SF and 2nd PF winner of 2nd QF plays winner of 1st SF; the winners progress to the next round, the Grand Final, where the winner of 1st PF plays the winner of 2nd PF.

I live in Sydney and grew up never having heard of Aussie rules/AFL as we are traditionally a rugby league state (a totally different game as you’ve learned). But then VFL became AFL and Sydney made a team (the Swans) and slowly it’s trickled into our state. Although in our state and in Queensland, rugby league is still far more popular. Yeah brother! Love your commitment to the great game! Pretty sure others will have answered these queries but you're right... If you don't bounce the ball every 15 meters, it gets handed over to the opposition. The ball has to be kicked 15 meters for someone to be awarded a "mark" (catch the ball). When this happens, an opposition player gets to stand where you marked the ball (standing the mark) but no one can tackle you or take the ball until either you move it on (kick it or handball it) or until the umpire calls "play on" (around 10 seconds) then you're fair game....unless you take a mark and are close enough to take a shot at a goal, then you have 30 seconds to take your kick before play on is called. You can kick the ball to another player within 15 meters but they will not be awarded a mark, the umpire will generally call "not 15" and the ball is still in play and you're still fair game. Yep, if it hits one of the middle posts, it's only worth 1 point. This game is freakish man! Players are huge, super fit - some cover around 10 miles in a game, sprinting, running and kicking arse. Their skills are insane, timing, instinct, reading the play and putting their bodies on the line at full charge with nothing more than a mouth guard. It's an epic sport and we love when people from other places get on board. New subscriber mate, keep up the great work!

While the ball has to travel 15 metres to be judged a mark, you frequently see kicks going 10-12 metres being paid as marks because there aren't really yard lines like on a gridiron field and it would be impossible to judge sideways kicks. So it's kinda at the umpires discretion.

When a player takes a 'mark' they can either play on, or stop and take an unimpeded kick from that spot. When the ball is kicked between the two middle goalposts, that is a Goal and worth 6 points; if the ball is touched, or hits the goalpost that is worth only 1 point. If you kick the ball between the big and the small outer goalposts, that is called a Behind and is worth 1 point.

Hey mate, an Aussie here. Loved the energy in the video, great to see people around the world getting pumped for our game too! Honestly no other sport IMO generates the same excitement and atmosphere as the footy! To clarify the run and bounce rule (I see a lot of reaction videos get confused about this rule), once a player has possession of the ball they're allowed to run a maximum of 15 metres before they need to bounce it. If they run too far without bouncing then it's a turnover to the opposition. So it's not necessarily every 15 metres to the step, but rather at least once every 15 metres. The Mens Grand Final is held every year in September at the Melbourne Cricket Ground aka the MCG (with the exception of 2020 & 2021 as COVID had severely impacted the Home & Away Seasons and Melbourne was under strict Lockdown Laws at the time of both Final campaigns). Would also recommend checking out some match, goal and mark highlights of this years 2022 season, experts reckon it's one of the best seasons of the modern era. Keep up the good work mate!

good question about the time for quarters! it's not so much added time, it's more that when a ball goes out of bounds or someone scores a goal then the clock stops. when the clock stops that just means quarters can go up to 30 mins rather than 20 mins but the players don't play for longer. sorry if that doesn't make sense, I'm not the best at explaining!

The ball has to be kicked, travel at least 15m in the air without touching the ground or being touched by another player, then brought under control by a player, before being called a 'mark'. If it hits either of the behind posts on the full (without hitting the ground) after being kicked it is considered 'out of bounds on the full' and a free kick is awarded to the opposition. In all other circumstances, if it hits the behind post it is 'out of bounds' and the ball is then thrown back in by the boundary umpire.

I love your enthusiasm for our game. I have watched sport all around the world, but I have never experienced a better atmosphere than what you find at AFL. You may have upset the Geelong fans though…..😂😂😂

Also the AFL draft is on tomorrow night which is where mostly all the best 18 year olds and some older blokes get drafted to all the different clubs. It’s the main way players get recruited. Obvs pretty similar to NBA and NFL drafts

If you don’t kick it 15m to a team member, it’s not considered a mark, and play continues. If it’s 15m or more, it’s a mark and the player can either play on, or stop and take a kick. You get 30 seconds to kick after a mark

Like others have commented , Johnny , the 2022 "Granny" was a blowout and wouldn't be a good example to watch , maybe the previous years (2021) Grand Final would be better or , for my money , the best one of recent times would be 2018 ( also relevant to you because Mason Cox played in it ). Also ....... "Geelong" is pronounced with a soft "G" ( Jelong) .

Hey brother!!! I did actually watch that 2022 GF right after this vid and yeah it was a disaster! Shld be a blast😅😅 Thanks for the correct pronunciation of Jelong as well! To think I was concerned about if I remembered if Sydney was named the Swans or not, and low and behold I was right there BUT screwed the Jelong name up!! Lmao!! In the Women's Grand Final this year and last for the Brisbane Lions there were two sisters playing that grew up with my children and only switched over to the women's game now it is more accepted from Netball (which is the most played women's sport in Australia - you won't know what that is anyway)

If my memory serves me correctly ....... If the ball hits the small, outside post, the ruling is out of bounds on the full which I think is a free kick to the opposition from where the ball is deemed to cross the boundary line, in this eg it would be taken next to the small outer post. Correct me if I am wrong peeps. 😉

Also best player highlights to watch include, dustin martin, eddie betts, Chris Judd, Ben cousins, Joel Selwood, and a player hardly anyone watches Jake King, aka the push up king.

The clock stops everytime there is a stoppage and then started when the ball has been thrown up for a ruck contest. The whole bouncing situation is pretty much if you run over 15m before bouncing then it’s a turnover so the best way to not do that is bounce it when you think you are close to that 15m mark so you get another 15m to run and repeat. A mark has to be from a kick and greater than 15m.

Yep, you got it! every Grand Final except for 3 that I can think of have always been and always will be at the MCG. Two of those three were out of the state of Victoria (where Melbourne is located) due to COVID outbreaks in Melbourne. the third was because a new stand was being built at the MCG, so they moved it to Waverly Park, but that was at least 40 years ago. But it's great that you're catching on with this! As an American myself (hell, I grew up in Nebraska, where the state religion is college football/gridiron), after seeing the AFL in person in 1995, I haven't been able to look at a single American football/gridiron game again. It's too stop/start and boring for me, compared to the AFL. But let's answer a couple more questions for you. If a player takes a mark, and the end of the quarter or end of the game siren sounds, that player who took the mark (if they are in range to kick a goal) STILL GETS TO TAKE THEIR KICK. Games can be won with kicks for goal after the siren. There's an entire video of those if you want to see how that works and the drama from that. That even goes for if a team kicks a behind (such as Sydney did in 1996, when a single behind was kicked, getting them into the Grand Final). You also noted the length of the season for the men's competition: 22 weeks. That is just the normal season. Including the finals and Grand Final - which go for an additional 4 weeks - that's a 26-week season. Compare that to the NFL, which barely has what, 18 weeks, then nearly a month off for the Super Bowl? Yeah.. we know which one is better there. Also, the Grand Final basically is the AFL's Super Bowl, except that you'll never see 100,000 at a Super Bowl. Next, I'd suggest looking at two other videos: The Top 50 AFL Marks of All Time, and the Top 50 AFL Goals of All Time. When it comes to the NFL, you'll notice how they kick for hangtime, but the form they kick is all the same. with the AFL, they'll kick for distance, plus know how to kick the ball a certain way to have it change direction after it's kicked. Seeing those will definitely entertain you!

You're picking the wrong game for a 1st time watch - game was a blowout early. Watch the previous week's Sydney vs Collingwood game instead

One misnomer is that it has 4 x 20 min quarters.. because of extra time, every game has around 4x 30min quarters.

I hope the grand final doesn't put you off -it's awfully one-sided. Most neutral supporters turned it off at halftime. Grand Finals are often blowouts. The preceding final between Sydney & Collingwood was a better game as a contest. One Grand Final worth watching is the 2018 Grand Final between West Coast and Collingwood
