Honestly mate us Aussies dont expect people from other countries , especially Americans, to have any clue at all about Aussie rules football. Anyone who has a willingness to learn the game automatically earns our respect . Its an exciting , fast , skillful game thats not exactly a conglomeration of other sports because it came before all of them . Its rules were codified in 1859 so Melbourne, Geelong and Carlton are the oldest teams in the world. Its a great time for you to get into the game as the season is about to start in a month . A hybrid game between Port (Adelaide) pirates and Clare was played in Clare in the 1850s. As much as I eschew giving Port credit for anything. The game was seen as "the new colonial game", so definitely rates a mention.

My experience is people first seeing the game on TV is a challenge given the size and speed of the game. When people get here I like to take them to a game, and they can get an appreciation of what is happening off the camera.

I'm an American who lived in Australia for a couple of years (Melbourne and Sydney). I was introduced to the AFL in 1994 - the same year that Gary Ablett took that mark at #2. more than that, I grew up in a state (Nebraska) where the state religion is college gridiron, so American football is ingrained in everyone there, so needless to say I'm tired of American football. The AFL is definitely where it is at, and is a code I've followed exclusively since the 90s. This is (according to AFL great Rex Hunt - and a statement I agree with) the best sport in the world, and the best sport that nobody has ever heard of. But thanks to our following in the US, we now have our own footy comp, in the USAFL. No one and nothing in the NFL can compare to this sport. Absolutely nothing. Kudos for looking further into it as well as giving it a second shot. I'd actually suggest now looking at the story of Mason Cox, called "Don't Believe in Never - Mason Cox". He's a fellow American who made it to the AFL, and as of this year, is now a premiership player for Collingwood; something that no other American to this date has done. You'll enjoy that story.

See, for 15 years, the only footy coverage we had was a 1-hour highlights show on a 2-week time delay (time to get the tape up here), and even then, it was aired at odd hours of the day, or even got pre-empted for such "sports" as the "World's Strongest Man" competition, or "Competitive Cheerleading". So we were just happy to have the coverage we got, and barracked for the team featured for the week, save Fitzroy (they all but lost every game until they merged). I was an international member of the Blues, but I haven't purchased a membership in years. Where I am currently at, the USAFL has a sister team with the Suns, as they are the Sacramento Suns. I might go for the Blues again or even the Doggies, since I used to live in the western suburbs, but also lived in Chatswood, so I could go for Sydney.

@@athlonen I am Carlton through and through.. In the Eighties I was in Miami Florida...on the beach and a sister and brother I met ( mainly the sister)😮. He the brother went to Georgia Tech. They told me they had never met an Australian before me... To my shock he starts asking about Carlton and Hawthorn and who was the guy that looked like Rasputin? He certainly had met the right Aussie for that Question! He was the legendary Carlton player Bruce Doull..nick name "the flying doormat". Trent from Georgia used to watch it late at night when ESPN showed it live back then...He loved it! Well it's good you lived here... you know! The religion it is like in Nebraska? Cheers! The producers who put together the show actually took Steve Quartermain off the show in 1996 to put Rex in! funny story: Plugger's Point. 1966 prelim between Sydney and Essendon. I was at the SCG when Plugger kicked that point, so I saw that live. But I missed the Grand Final as I had to fly back home. But keeping in mind that the highlights show was on a 2-week delay, the day I got back home (the Friday before the Grand Final), the highlights show aired that exact match for the featured match of the round.

For context, that dom sheed goal was to put his team in front with a couple of minutes to go in the 2018 grand final, difficult shot from the angle under immense pressure, his team then held on to win premiership. That Malcom blight goal was a kick after the final siren. So effectively the game time had elapsed, buzzer had gone off already. But in this game you are allowed to take set shot at goal even if no time left, as long as you took "mark" before time had elapsed. Blight kicked it about 75-80metres to put his team in front and win the game, an almost impossible shot that most players wouldn't have a chance of making because they couldn't kick that far.

Also a free kick after the siren. Interesting point is that Blight's kick sails through above the posts, or at least at the top of them. He came from a perennial cellar dwelling club called Woodville, (only playing in the finals once, reaching the preliminary final before losing when coached by Blight). The Age (newspaper) once published a team made up of Woodville players. Phenomenally talented team you'd be lucky to squeeze under the salary cap. Most of the team ended up in the VFL/AFL and are names that would be easily recognised by Victorians.

I think that you may be the first reactor to comment on the randomness of the ball bounce due to the oval shape of the ball. This randomness keeps the players on high alert all through the game. The game was developed in the state of Victoria, Australia and based on a game called 'marn grook' played by the aboriginal/first nations people of Australia who are the oldest continuous living culture Tom Wills (and others) developed the game after watching the aboriginals play it on his relative's farm in Western Victoria near Ararat. There is a monument to this near there. Another more recent video to watch is, 'A Beginners Introduction to AFL.'

Its debatable as to weather the Aboriginals had much influence on Wills's game as there is no actual evidence of him witnessing Marn Grook being played , so its a bit of speculation . In any case its no coincidence the Aboriginal players are such naturals at the game and excel way above the percentage of the population they make up of the country.

Wills was Captain of Football at the Rugby School in England and in his final year of school he travelled extensively. He saw Irish immigrants playing Gaelic Football in Liverpool and was so impressed by what he saw he wrote a letter to his father saying a game like this is needed in the colony. So Marn Grook may have been an influence but so was the Rugby game and Gaelic Football. The oval shaped ball came from Rugby as that is where the first ones were made. Willis also brought some terminology from the Rugby game ie. ruck and mark. Remember that somewhere between 1200 and 1500 Aboriginal people were killed in Victoria between 1830 and 1860 (that we know of) so how likely is it that the white man would copy the black man's game? Sadly, not very likely. This is all easily found on the net.

When you mentioned the randomness of the ball's bounce you hit the nail right on the head. Some detractors don't like what appears to be the often scrappy play, but what's happening is a battle for control. It's a fight against chaos that can transform itself into smooth, fluid play that takes the ball to your goal. Very often a joy to behold and may the best team win.

Only just came across this video. Watching your awe and excitement reminds me of why AFL is somewhat unique among ball sports. the only problem with the what is afl video, is that marks is actually an overall term for when you catch the ball after it has been kicked over a distance of 15 metres, then you can play on or take an unimpeded kick. what you where referring to as marks are often referred to as a speccy

A mark is where the player gets up on someone's shoulders and catches it and still holds the ball till they touch the ground is called a specky. If they lose the ball on the way way down it's not a mark and it's play on still.

Lance Franklin is 198cm tall... or 6'7" in US measurements. Malcolm Blight absolutely nailed that barrel. A barrel is a spiral punt kick. It spirals like a QB throw and if you really get hold of it, you can pretty much kick the length of a grid iron field. Aussie rules grounds are massive and are also used as cricket pitches. It is a special sport that is slowly getting a following around the world.

Australian rules football, AFL, Its a game all of its own. It probably relates closest to Basketball in respect to how players team together & pass the ball around. Also the game has no offside like soccer or Rugby. And unlike in American football, everyone kicks the ball. .

I wasa lucky enough to be at the Grand Final they showed (2012). The MCG is amazing when the crowd is pumping, and after absolute silence for the Natioanl Anthem, the crowd roars on it's completion, then boosts louder at the first siren, and continues to get louder and louder for the first 10 minutes of the first quarter. It settles a bit after that, but any little thing can stir the crowd for another burst of noise......and then of course it errupts again at the final siren.

A friend of our family was a goal umpire and even umpired a few Grand Finals. He had to do the same physical training as the centre and boundary umpires. This was when there was only one centre umpire, which changed in the mid-90s if I remember correctly. He also had to have his vision checked multiple times a year to verify his ability to judge goals. His wife and daughters were mad Collingwood fans, and everything in the house was black and white. If he had to umpire a game with Collingwood and they lost, he had a very frosty week until the next match. In the old days... ( gee's, I sound old!)... the game was much rougher with fist fights and harder take downs, but the rules changed, and fighting was, for the most part, stopped for player safety and certain tackles which used to be legal, were outlawed. Just about every kid learns how to bounce a footy, girls included, we even had it as a part of our Physical Education in high school in the late 70s and early 80s being taught how to kick and mark the ball. My daughters were both given mini Sherrins for their first Christmas at the ages of 3 to 4 months.

Nice video mate, Personally I prefer the newer afl guide made by the afl channel, it better summerises the competition and rules than this video does inspite of its lower popularity. A tip if you get properly interested in this, the afl website is by far the most helpful league website I know and you can see full replays for each game by going to the fixture and going back to completed games. My favourite from 2023 was the Richmond v Essendon game in round 10. No one likes Collingwood except for Collingwood fans because they are feral, constantly talked about by the media over more deserving teams, get preferential treatment and never stop winning. They now have the equal most premierships (equivalent of the Vince Lombardy trophy) with Carlton and Essendon (I’m sympathetic to Essendon and Brisbane so you can probably see where part of my bias is) The season is starting in March, it’s the perfect time to start getting into the greatest game on earth! (I believe it can be viewed live in the us on fox soccer plus)

Collingwood are my team and last year’s Grand Champions. AFL takes nothing from any other game because it was the first coded football anywhere. Before yours. It is fast and fun, played only by elite athletes who run for up to 90 minutes while still keeping all skills. Nothing beat the magic of seeing a Grand Final at the MCG with a crowd of over 90,000 fans. Or the sound when they roar. During the season you can watch a live game on KZbin every weekend but it is Sumner now. There are 50 teams in America, one in each State. They are called the AFL US but it seems none of you know they are there. We only have 22 teams but we only have almost 26 million people. We are the same size as America minus Alaska so there is plenty of space.

Wait until you refer to Rugby League as "rugby" in front of someone from Sydney, they lose their minds. Even though it's literally called the National RUGBY League, for some reason they are adamant that it's not rugby (maybe they should rename their league to the NNRL - National Not-Rugby League..?).

As long as you can recognize your mistake and you promise to not do it again, we can let it go and move on. No drama. There are questions (to this day) about Gary Ablett's mark (10:10) that game was in 1994 and people are still debating it. Suffice to say that, the bottom line is, it's up to the Umpire as to whether or not the "Mark" was completed. The Umpire has to determine that the Marking player controlled the ball to the ground. (hence the disagreement) some people say he did, while others disagree, doesn't matter, the Umpire says he did. Anyhoo, welcome to AFL footy, the season starts in March, pick yourself a team and get on board.

Wills who codified the game was influenced by watching marn grook, a game played by the indigenous people as well games in England that were yet to be codified, association football(soccer) which gave birth to rugby but it clearly differentiates from them mostly. It's 360 degree play, no off side etc, make that obvious. It used to be a lot rougher but also a little less dynamic. It's frenetic and spectators are exhausted by the end, lol

As a side note, please also recognise the differences between Rugby League & Rugby Union. There are some pretty stark differences, but, the biggest mistake a lot of your fellow KZbinrs make is, you all call Rugby league, Rugby! This is incorrect, as Rugby should be used in reference to Rugby union. Rugby league is also called footy, like AFL.

The score board 1st column is goals (6 points). 2nd column is behinds (1point) 3rd column is Total amount all added up. Eg. 20 10 180. 20x6=120 10x6=60 120+60=180

Marngrook was a football type game , but it has little to do with the actual advent of the oldest codified sport in the world , Harrison and Wills , both went to British schools played Rugger , but made a uniquely new code , played on Rugby grounds , but Rugger was played in schools in England, so the first football games were played on rugby grounds ,how the phrase Aussie Rules found it's way into our vernacular, as NSW Rugger player , said , well , they play Rugby , but they use the Australian Rules, a Derogatory put down at the time , but , as irony would have it , Aussie Rules, sure does , and Harrison House was league headquarters for over 100 years , it's complicated, but most AFL Clubs date before the 20th Century , 1858 , and the first games of Australian rules was played on Cricket grounds by the newly formed VCFA,and formally codified the game , the oldest football sport codified , (even the FA cup wasn't introduced till 1870 ), mainly to keep Cricketers fit off season , so not dismissing Marngrook, but hundreds of cultures played these type of games 1000s of years ago , and , there is storys of fine Aboriginal footballers , because the concept was not new on them , like the first Australian rules games was the first team to score 2 goals , but after two week ends , no score , they called it off and , they made rule changes , not 50 a side 20 , sort of thing , and it has constantly evolved to what we see today , the greatest game on the planet , GO BLUES RARARA

dont worry mate....you're not that important in the scheme of things. But it's nice to get an apology. I actually watched patrick mahome this morning and I like how he throws the ball. There's a lot of commercial breaks and a lot of time when nothing much is happening, but it was a pretty close game and it was a final so sport is always pretty interesting on those occasions. That being said, it's just a very very very slow process to get through a game. There must be about 10 minutes of actual action over a 3 hour period. Great tv commercials though. Lots and lots and lots of tv commercials....lots. And I like Patrick.

Just to let you know this sport started in 1858 so it's the earliest codified football sports in the world it was invented to keep cricketers fit during the summer months cricket is also huge in Australia it's a fast paced full contact sport we have had this game hidden from the rest of the world for over one hundred and sixty years it's about time people from other countries start to see what there been missing

Keeping those cricketers fit during winter. I think they needed to be a lot fitter during winter anyway, footy is far more physical. Warne's approach to fitness would have landed him in a lot of trouble with the coach.

You seem to be comparing Australian football to the American game which is fair enough as you are American. But I would point out Australian Football was codified in 1857 before your Civil war and before Walter Cramp, father of American Football, was even born. In this regard it predates soccer and rugby as well.
