This last weekend I went to the Mall of America to "Relaxing Massage," a *family-owned* Chinese massage business that has been around for many years at that mall (even when some of the big brands come and go). I went there because I'm learning Mandarin, and wanted to hear and try speaking to someone in real life for the first time ever. I asked my massage lady where she's from and she said Hong Kong. I mentioned that I picked up a little Cantonese but was mainly learning Mandarin, but then right away she went full-blown Cantonese XD I tried to say that I know A LITTLE of it. So I said "Hello, my name is Alex," and "Nice to meet you." None of which she was impressed by. It didn't help that my face was buried in that hole, but overall it was an odd experience. I could recognize words to get the overall general sentence/topic, but I was so panicked that I managed to forget over a year's worth of Mandarin, so I was panicking, stuttering, and going "uuuuh" so much. There's a lot more to it, but it was an awkward first start, and I think she thought I was crazy... But hey, I'm going to put my head down and keep learning so that next time she *doesn't* think I'm some dolt :D

Strong accent in Canto. Pretty impressed. Am half Chinese and half German and finally bucked up and really started learning German again, my mum spoke to me in Canto throughout my childhood so I can speak but never knew how to write... Definitely making me wish I knew the written theory though!

Yeah, we put totally random stuff on our shirt. I think it's because we care more about the visual aesthetics than the underlying meaning. It's also quite often to see random English phrase and sometimes even fascist symbolism.

It is a beautiful thing when someone wants to learn another language. It shows you are a open-minded person and willing to accept other cultures. Your Cantonese is very good. Heck, your Potunghao is better than mine. Wish more people in this world and especially in the US would be more open minded to people who can speak another language. Seeing too much racism right now.
