@@weiwenwwe2066 and why is that a problem? People who want to engage in other people's cultures and become a part of it is great. And actually from my perception he's not actually trying to be native in his everyday life just for the video

@@karlonly9941 you may perceive it differently, but from the other videos I've seen him upload, all I see is him putting down others (especially Chinese people) while they try their best to learn English. Learning a language is not easy and it requires a lot of courage, but it's disturbing that there is a double standard going on in his videos. Like in one of his videos he commented sarcastically about someone having an American accent and in another video he criticises someone for his/her chinglish accent. I really wonder what does he expect him/her to do? He also tries to put on an acceny but I don't see anyone criticising him but there he is putting down others. It's like asking them not to speak at all. Why not let him be more encouraging and not just simply putting down others while they try hard to speak English.
@weiwenwwe2066
@weiwenwwe2066 4 жыл бұрын
@@karlonly9941 he puts down others for having an American accent (I.e: JJ LIN) yet he puts on a Chinese accent while speaking. I don't see a problem in that but since he's there to ciriticise others for putting an accent while he himself does the same, I feel it's important to point it out
@karlonly9941

@@weiwenwwe2066 I guess I haven't watched enough of his content or haven't witnessed this yet. I can't say your wrong but I'll pay more attention. But I do hope you realize Chinese culture is very blunt and comments that would be considered rude in America, Canada, UK are not as serious in Chinese culture. Maybe it's a culture understanding he's expressing. As you saw in this video the girl called him a mother F'er which to her was a complete stranger.

Mandarin is acknowledged to be a difficult language to learn for native English speakers, so this guy's skills (and accent, apparently) are seriously impressive. However, the level of English skills among these Beijing students is also good, and in some cases (cf the guy studying Chemistry) very impressive, given that they've not studied outside China. this is the most natural chinese accent I've ever heard from a foreigner. you could definitely pass for a native. -- edit: this comment is pretty old but there have been lots of replies so i just want to clarify: i'm in no way saying that laoma chris is the most impressive language learner or the only foreigner who can speak mandarin this well! i'm merely saying that, out of all the foreigners i've heard speaking mandarin, his accent could most easily pass for a native's. i don't doubt that there are other foreigners who speak mandarin just as well, or even better. also, other language-learners (such as laoshu, xiaomanyc, and more), are impressive as well! mandarin can be difficult for english-speakers to learn, and the fact that they can learn mandarin to such an extent is amazing. this comment is in no way meant to discredit their achievements. i just wanted to point out that laoma chris has an extremely natural chinese accent, even more so than myself, despite the fact that i am fluent and have learned chinese for 18 years (since birth) as an american-born chinese with immigrant parents. sure, laoma chris has had the advantage of actually living in china, but that doesn't take away from how good his mandarin is, especially for a foreigner! -- tl;dr please don't take this comment the wrong way or argue in the comments. all language-learners are impressive, and if you are one yourself, 加油!

A co-worker of mine is from Beijing. He went to school in Texas to get his computer science degree and obviously is a mandarin speaker although he also speaks Cantonese. The hilarious part is that he learned a lot of English in Texas and actually says "y'all" every now and then. He has a quasi-Texas accent that completely is against his appearance. We've been trying to speak with a cowboy accent every time he is around. He takes it well and enjoys our little language pranks on him.

So he's lived in China for eight years...that helps explain a lot! I'd hope after living in any country for eight years someone serious about learning a language could achieve a high level of mastery over it. (This is not to take away from his linguistic abilities--he's clearly talented)
