There are a few sides to being kicked out of the hospital rather quickly. One is the obvious one: A hospital bed is expensive, and you are a patient here, not a client. Another one: you are much less likely to attract all kinds of infections at home. A hospital is a place for sick people, so sicknesses are rampant. Another thing is that, you are more likely to be active at home. Which increases blood flow and speeds up recovery. Also movement promotes wound recovery.

Congrats! For those reading and thinking: "Wow, homebirths are crazy! Just because of how it's done, doesn't mean they're safe!" I want to emphasize that, specifically in the Netherlands homebirths are proven to be very safe. Midwifes are profesionally trained (specialised nurses, with a college degree), and very capable of assessing whether your pregnancy is safe enough for a home birth. The fact that it is very hard to live more than an hour away from a hospital (maybe even more than half an hour), helps with getting laboring people to the hospital quickly in case there are unforseen complications. You will also absolutely get more than 3 ultrasounds if they are needed and risks in pregnancy are taken very seriously. This video is great! But I wanted to emphasize that the culture around pregnancy is still very much science-based, while also being laid-back.

There is an other reason for opting for home-birth. Hospitals aren’t really healty. There are a lot of virusses and bacteria floating around. Someone who has just given birth or babies are a bit more susceptable for catching an illness.

Our helicopter, the Airbus H135, is fully equipped and optimized for night operations, allowing our teams to land at the scene of an incident in the dark and effectively bring the hospital to the patient. Previously, we could only fly between hospitals from lit helicopter landing pad to lit helicopter landing pad. Air ambulances are legally allowed to fly at night. However, all pilots must first be trained in night flying before they are allowed to do so.👴🤨

@@Arnaud58 You say "bring the hospital to the patient" .... is that a mistake ? Because ambulances carry way more equipment than the heli's. Sp if anything is bringing the hospital to the patient it is 100% the ambulance. Also ambulances offer a way better "ride" to the hospital than heli's. The ONLY thing (to my knowledge) where the heli excels is to bring a specialized doctor (arts) to the scene in record time. That doctor is then qualified to do medical procedures at the spot of the incident that an ambulance crew with a medic (verpleegkundige) and driver are not allowed to. I would say more than 95% of "trauma heli" flights do not carry a patient back to hospital. Their aim is to bring a doctor to the scene who can "stabilize" the patient for transport by road in an ambulance. Area's that an ambulance cant not reach, like the Wadden Isles, would be an exception.

You can’t not have health insurance in the Netherlands. Even if you don’t have it, you still have it. The only difference is that the government chases you down and makes you pay the standard monthly premium, about € 130.

Haha. I do still love the 'consternatie bureau' joke. But to be honest I must say that I didn't feel there was any 'issue' with both my children. Granted, I had it easy with to healthy and problem free kids. But still the vibe I got was "Don't worry so much as a parent. It's all fine". That was basically the response on every question we had. "Sir, your children are growing fine (along their own scales) and they seem happy and responsive. Keep doing what you are doing." So, pretty calming and reassuring really.

After we got our first baby, the 'kraamverzorgster' taught me everything about how to take care of a baby. I knew basically zero, but I also knew I didn't have to worry, because she would have about a week to teach me everything. Also, even after the week, you can call her when you are in doubt about something. In short, taking care of citizens at all stages of life should be the priority of any nation.

I'm a Californian (who loves her green juice 😛) living in Amsterdam, but my intention was to delivery in a birthing center. To my knowledge those aren't a common option in the US either, but I thought it was a great compromise between hospital and home. Of course things rarely go to plan, and my labor was so fast I ended up with a very Dutch delivery (at home without painkillers) anyway 🤣 My kraamzorg experience was also eye-opening in the way the Dutch handle post-partum care, and I loved it! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures with a new little one (when you are ready!)

First of all, congratulations to both of you on the birth of your daughter. Such a first child in your family means a whole change in your life. But the nice thing is that you grow with your child. I am a grandfather of a beautiful grandson who is now 2 years old and who lives with his mother, our daughter, at our home. Father lives on his own and they no longer have a relationship. Dutch guy here. My sister has 4 daughters. She opted for hospital delivery everytime. With 3 of them it was a single night at the hospital and then off to home. But with one, who was premature, they've spent a week in hospital before going home. About the costs. I'm following an American couple on KZbin who just had their second baby. She spent two nights at the hospital and they've got charged just over 10k Dollars. I really got a WTF moment there. Healthcare is so much better here in the Netherlands.

Congratulations to the parents and the baby! Welcome to the world little one. Tip for the parents: do everything you would usually do, like vacuum, clean, walk around, listen to music, and so on. Do it at the times you would usually do too. The baby will get used to noise and sleep like a baby should. In the USA I see parents do the opposite and when the baby is asleep everything has to be quiet. Because the baby gets used to that, it wakes up from all sounds. I used to vacuum especially when the baby was asleep and even next to his bed and he slept through the night within a couple of months.

The cost for health insurance is around 130 E a month. It is also the biggest cost for the government around 100 Billion a year. So we actually pay a lot more if you would add up all the taxes that are needed to fund the system. However, paying tax is a lot better then getting hit with 10s of thousands of euros bills from the hospital. It spreads the risk around which makes it affordable for almost everyone.

My congratulations on the birth of your Daughter to both you and your Wife, Ava.. Your story took me back to the birth of our child many years ago, that was intended to be at home, but ended up in a battle of over 14 hours in Hospital due to complications. But, man, after she was born... such bliss. Different from what you described, before birth, we were able to follow a practical course in basic baby-care (with dummy-babies), provided by the "Kruisvereniging".. Ofcourse we also had Kraamzorg which was absolutely great. But now for you and your Wife the long journey of parenting begins, which will get more complicated when your Daughter grows older. In many cases that parenting journey is also a journey into yourself.. for you will be confronted with yourself from time to time. "Teach your parents well Their children's hell will slowly go by And feed them on your dreams The one they pick's the one you'll know by" ( Teach your children - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young)

Ava, Congratulations!!! As a 77 years old Dutchman, I am proud of you (with your wife and your baby) for integrating so well in our society. A lot of woke people accuse the more conservative people of xenofobia, but I think that is wrong. Anyone who is open to our ‘strange’ habits and is willing to adapt to our culture is very welcome. We are willing to acknowledge your different views and habits and learn from that. We did this for many centuries and we really welcome other views and cultures. That’s why you can get the best Indonesian food in Den Haag and find Vietnamese restaurants in Amsterdam but also in small places in The Netherlands. And Italian restaurants everywhere. Your videos are so interesting and make us proud of our country. As you know the Dutch complain a lot, but thanks to positive people like you, we realize that we are living in a very well organized country. Thank you so much. Go on with this great video channel.
