AMERICAN HISTORY READERS FOR UPPER ELEMENTARY STUDENTS | 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Educational Books
We will be studying American History in the next year or so of school. My girls read a lot and so I have picked out 38 books to be their readers for the upcoming school year.

I would love to know how do you schedule reading the books before you give it to your kids, so that you know what they’re reading. Do you have a system? I would love love to do that but feels so overwhelming. Thank you!!

Honestly, I first prepare that spreadsheet of the order that I want the books read in. Then... I just assign my girls one book at a time. They record when they start and when they finish the book. I try to check in periodically and get a oral narration of what they are reading. My girls read for 20 minutes in the afternoon 4-5 days a week and then they read 10 minutes out loud to their dad or I Sun-Thursday evenings (for a total of 30 minutes most days). As they finish books, I assign them the next book, or if they start getting too ahead compared to our history, I let them choose from some other books that I have pre-chosen for them. That is my entire system :)

What great options! I wish I had learned history through literature growing up, I feel like I would have actually appreciated it and been so much more interested. Learning through stories makes such a bigger impact with my kids than asking them to read a page of information or completing a worksheet.

100% agreed! I thought I didn’t like history until I took some history in university and I realized it was just cool stories! So glad my kids can learn this way!

We love American history readers! It has been one of our favorite aspects to our history units the past few years. The Great Turkey Walk was so funny! We did it as a read aloud and loved it. You have an amazing stack. Have fun!

We use the sonlight book lists!!! We love using biographies for history!!! The landmark books looks awesome!!! For us American history comes into world history but my 11 year old twins love doing American history so they end up doing that more than other countries history!!! Liberty Kids, 1176 Movie, very good movie my parents watch every Independent’s day weekend or few days before the holiday, American 🇺🇸 girl hisctoral fiction, Find a pattern that’s historical for her dolls, people re selling American Girl dolls sec hand, Fb market place, Mericur, Thrift stores, Yard sales,. Save them for Christmas!. There’s rumors of Kirsten coming back I ll let u know when it’s happening already had Molly come back a month ago!. Cook books, paper dolls, man-gents. Art studios. Can borrow the Cook books from the library. My first one I bought from a used county book sale 15 years ago. Have her even do a recipe from that time period make it fun. Craft books, with them together is hard to find people sell them on crazy high prices unfortunately Wellie wishes re for little girls from ages 4-7 years old. I say it’s a good time to start inducting them into the historical dolls my oldest niece I did 6/1/2 years old she was being responsible, & inserted that young. Bitty Baby is for little girls 3-6 years old I have been reading people commenting on their they might be releasing books again. I hope so the Bitty Twins there’s talk of bringing them back for that line I d’ make it to 2-5 years old & Bitty Baby same I never understood why they got rid of age 2 years old for Bitty Baby. I hope they bring back the trading cards. I hope I was of help. Even my boyfriend & made our discussion official The other day we re going to be homeschooling when we have kids. Lot of people asked if we re going to be Secular Homeschoolers umm no. I don’t want my feature kids to go through what I went through in the school system no thank you. I am not doing day care. Wiping tables threading beads, stamping paper bags, so quote cooking wasn’t, the whole special Ed system isn’t going to be fixed till u get an admin that’s willing to fix it. I ll not be ear tickled no . Or have them held back. Just for the mainstream have them hurt by it like I am .
