The script originally ended with Derek going home and shaving his head again, the idea being that the cycle of anger and hate is endless. Norton rebelled, would not go along with it, and ended up taking control of the film away from Tony Kaye, the writer/director.

@Serai3
@Serai3 3 жыл бұрын
@@OctoKrool The argument was essentially between "people learn" (Norton) and "people don't learn" (Kaye). My own opinion is that _individuals_ can learn but our _species_ doesn't. Thus we keep going through this over and over in every culture throughout history. Fear and hate of The Other is endemic to human beings and not some localized phenomenon based on this or that group's history. It's a very rare group that has never had to contend with this shit. We always find some reason to hate others, sadly, whether it's race, religion, appearance, etc. Hell, people have been persecuted and murdered for being _left-handed._ All we can do is try not to be asshats ourselves.

@@OctoKrool I feel like Norton's character had grown too much, he now knew that the way he felt and thought was so wrong that he was disgusted with himself for having been able to fall for it in the first place, it would have been completely out of character and a slap in the face of his growth and development. He no longer holds those opinions, he knows now that even his own race can be violent, judgemental, and ignorant like he had believed minorities to be, and he had made a decision that would prevent him from ever being accepted in that community ever again. In my mind the way it ended is the only way it could end, maybe Derek takes his mom and sister and they move somewhere else to get away, but that's not really relevant to the message and the exact story, so we can just assume something like that happens after the credits.

What should have stood out to you, op, is that while there is definitely unfairness in our criminal justice system, you are overlooking the fact that Derek was only sentenced to three years, because his brother wouldn't testify to what he saw. It says very clearly, that Derek would have gotten life in prison had Danny testified. He was perfectly within his rights to fire at the guy with the gun, that is self defense on his own property.... He went beyond self defense, when he curb stomped the guy, killing him. That is murder. Danny would not testify to it and nobody else saw what happened, so it was derek's word.

Ok I'm gonna say it, I don't believe it's an unfair bias, Im sure it happens here and there, but on the whole and this is when I'm gonna be labelled a bigot, most white defendants try to come across as sorrowful for the crimes they've committed and though probably not genuine a lot of the time attempt to show remorse, a lot of black defendants have a "ride or die" attitude or I'm being victimised attitude, this looks unremorseful and is obviously taken negatively when sentencing, I think a lot of this unfairness mentality is a self fulfilling prophecy.

Damn good movie. Edward Norton actually helped edit this movie when the Director quit, and the diner at the end is also the same from Big Lebowski. Not justifying what happened at the end, but it wasn't "just staring". I think the other guy saw it as disrespecting, which leads to embarrassment and shame, then being angry about that. Plus Danny was already a known skinhead, brother of the notorious Derick Vinyard. He likely already had a reputation going against him :( That's the ripple effect of hate, once it starts it hard to stop the chain reaction.

I don't think they were brothers 🤔 the guys who Derek killed were the same guys who Derek and his mates beat on the basketball court, so they were gonna nick his car as payback for Derek and his mates winning the basketball match (this was black and white scene so was the past) The lad who killed Danny was the lad who Danny disrespected in the bathroom when he blew smoke in his face so Danny got shot for that ( filmed in colour so it was the present) I think they were trying to show how easily young people are influenced and manipulated by older people around them. Danny was influenced by his father, Derek/Cameron etc, and the young lad who shot Danny by the older people he knew etc. That's my take on it anyway 👍 a great film with fantastic performances by all and a film that stays with you long after the credits roll 🎥

The question everyone talks about, I personally got little from at first. I don't know if anything has made it better. The question I had to ask eventually is, "Has anything you've done made others' life better?" What I think makes the movie great is how it shows the racism comes from both sides, encouraging both. It is from internal hate and the focus of everything around them. Like you guys said you aren't born with it. It is the focus of the society around them. I love how it shows problems can come from every side.

The teacher put this on with 25 14 y/o teenagers and, by the end (we watched in one go: it was a 3 hour class), there was just silence for like 20 minutes. the black guy may have also been lying..thats what is awesome because its vague enough where sure we like him but hes in jail so he could be badder then we know...who knows what he really did...he could be telling the truth but if he was on probation and had multiple strikes before, then hes going to get an extra year or two...what if he did chuck it at the cops..we don't know the tuth...its his word man...do we give criminals the benefit of the doubt cause we like them?..the movie subtly tricks us...its hearsay..maybe he was apart of a bigger ring of thiefs and this is not the only incident hes been in...and they used that to give him more time with evidence...

Point some miss is that while he was trying to make his life better he never dealt or addressed with the pain he caused that family when he killed their son/brother/loved one... @Grnademaster
@Grnademaster 3 жыл бұрын
Things are NOT worse now. Media is showing you a narrative, not actuality. If you think you are getting the truth when you turn on CNN, or FOX News, you're delusional. It's all garbage. Their goal is to pit us against each other, instead of people uniting against the government, corporations, and politicians that are screwing us all over
@tazmom0
@tazmom0 3 жыл бұрын
@@Grnademaster oh, for Christ's sake. Trumpanzee or Berniebro? Things ARE worse. Look at crime stats. I'm also married to a police officer who will tell you that things have gotten incredibly bad over the last 5 years. Spare me the political bullshit.
@Grnademaster
@Grnademaster 3 жыл бұрын
@@tazmom0 Things are worse because of poverty, as Octokrool has brought to point several times here. Also because the government prints money out of thin air to pay for things that don't help the people. Inflation has gone through the roof, and "they" say it's only temporary. Only rich folks will be building a house when a 2x4 costs $11.59 a piece now. The rich don't suffer with these issues, and they don't care about us. This is nothing new. Same thing happened 2000 years ago during the Roman empire, and it was happening 2000 years before that also. But if things are so bad where you live, as you say, it sounds like you live in a big city. I'd suggest moving to a rural area, where we don't care to watch all the political manipulation on TV so much. Just don't build your own house because you won't be able to afford the lumber for it. Trump and Bernie are richer than the whole populations of some countries, so why should anyone think they would have our interests in mind? If you live in an a place where you actually see and hear racist comments or signs everyday, then I'd love to have a conversation about it. But if you believe the world is more racist because the news brings it up every half hour or because it's trending on Twitter, then I'm afraid you have fallen into that weaker mindset that "they" prey upon - as Octokrool pointed out a couple times here as well. That weak mindset of the masses is preyed upon in ALL aspects of politics to benefit an individual or an agenda.

@@Grnademaster When my husband became a police officer, we lived in the middle class suburb he was hired into. We are white. The city is around 90% African American. They no longer allow you to post a link here, but if you want to look it up, the city is Warrensville Hts. in Ohio. We now reside in a suburb which is at the high end of middle class but is still pretty diverse. I am not as cynical as you, as I do believe that most politicians do care about us. I don't plan on discussing politics. My post was about crime rates. I am a Democrat who thinks Donald Trump is the antichrist and nothing will change my views so it's a waste of time to chat about it. Of course poverty plays a huge part in criminal behavior. Nobody is denying that. But, when you have ANTIFA and the Proud Boys running around stirring up hate, it affects crime rates. There have been more hate crimes in the last few years than anytime since the civil rights movement. Trump has demonized the media. Now, when the news is not about a topic that an individual wants to hear about, it's "fake news". That really bothers me, because I have a degree in Journalism and it was never about lying or ignoring the real issues, for me. I think most reporters feel the same way I do. I am sorry that this reply is a total mess but I have only slept for 2 hours and I'm slightly delirious.
@WorldBurial

@@tazmom0 You don't want to discuss politics but go on with juvenile comments like Trump being the antichrist. I'm not even from the US but a president who managed to increase employment among all races, made the country energy independent (now gone), created several peace deals in the Middle East, calmed down North Korea etc. doesn't sound too bad objectively. About criticizing the media. It has been proven that the FBI falsified documents, the media made up stories and admitted after the election that they lied etc. MSNBC which you watch was one of the worst there. Why wouldn't that be condemned? Compare that to Obama/Biden who literally spied on AP journalists who criticized them and weaponized the IRS against political opponents. There were open letters from journalists back then about press freedom being in danger.

I think you missed the point of his laundry room friend's back story scene. You even made a comment after the scene about how unfair it was to get 6 years in prison just because "the TV fell on his foot." He didn't get 6 years for the TV falling on the cops foot, he got 6 years for throwing the TV at the cop. The whole point of the scene is that the entire system is completely corrupt. The cop lied about what happened, and nobody did an investigation to see what actually happened.

i was amazed to learn how much Tony Kaye fought to take his name off the directorial credit, he released his cut of the film and the studios and Ed Norton wanted to add 18 minutes and it got messy, Ed Norton barely talks about this movie as the experience really soured him for awhile. Kaye got blacklisted for over a decade and this was his debut too. It does tinge the legacy of the film a little buy luckily not much. There is another part of me though that wonders if they had picked a more experienced director would this film have turned out better?
